Outstanding instruction on this one. This beautiful and iconic song was highlighted on NPR Radio this evening- so I’m certain you’ll get LOTS of extra views from folks like me wanting to now learn it. Excellent job 👌🏼
Thank you, Lauren. This song has the type of acoustic guitar music that sparked my fascination with this instrument as a little boy in the time of the singer-songwriters. Recently fresh to me but still stylistically nostalgic-feeling.
Ok, I am a beginner, I searched everywhere for a quick course to show me the basics. Each one of these instructors skipped many important steps that I feel Lauren did not. She is mindful of how newbie’s feel. I am buying the platinum package from her website. She’s just that badass. Lauren, I don’t expect you to read this, but I just wanted to let you know that I have never in my life picked up a guitar and with one lesson from you, I feel there’s hope for me to actually learn. Thank you!
Well I AM reading it! Wow. Thank you so much for your kind words and feedback. I am so happy to help you on your guitar journey. Thank you for supporting me and my channel. It really means a lot to me. 🥰
@@LaurenBateman whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat! Thanks Lauren! I’ve had 10 other friends subscribe to your channel. The things I liked about your videos were the close ups to the guitar and finger positioning, the explanation of the why within each song and the repetitiveness of the instruction. In addition to the visual aids. I am now playing Silent Night (not well but you can hear what it is! I cannot believe it) time for me to join a rock band I think I’m ready (joking of course!) just feeling good about it. This is the farthest I’ve ever gotten after three attempts to learn because my music instructors weren’t patient or just didn’t have the drive to teach and motivate. Again thank you so much my 10 year old daughter and I are glued to your videos!
Lauren, you are such a wonderful teacher. You always reply to comments in a wonderfully positive manner and you come across as you really care about teaching. Happy New Year. We need more people like you in the world! BTW - I love this song and the album. Their harmonies are so good!
The diagram for Dmaj11 shows 1 fret up on 2nd string and 2 frets up on 4th and 5th, but you said move everything 2 frets up from C. Can you clarify? Thanks for the great lesson!
Indigo Girls were one of the bands that got me into playing guitar (specifically, "Shame on You"). My daughter fell in love with this song after watching the Barbie movie, so I'm learning to play it for her. Great step by step video, I really appreciate the detail!!
I used to play air guitar to this song 30 years ago. Now after learning guitar in the past few years, I'm ready to learn this with your kick-ass tutorial! Thank you!
I've been listening to this song since '89, and it's been on my mind since seeing Barbie last year. Now I'm playing along for the first time, and it's exhilarating, thanks!
Great video Lauren, I’ve tried to work out the the strumming pattern for this song just by listening and never quite nailed it. I have now thanks to your excellent tuition around the D chord. Go well ✌️
Another great lesson from a very good guitarist. Hope you and your family have a beautiful new year and all your dreams come true. Thats to everyone on here also. I love you all ❤🙏🎸🎸
Very well done. Thank you. And yes, it's a great song. I used to play and sing this song back in the day. I want to perform it again and I wanted to see what a tutorial would be like. There was no TH-cam back when I learned this song.
I'm only half way through and needed to stop to comment on how great this is. Thank you! Also, I don't understand why i couldn't comment on the version of the video that came up when i searched. It's like they're trying to make human interaction as difficult as possible. Anyway, I appreciate you very much.
One of the best guitar instructor on TH-cam, I can see the immediate change in my strumming patterns which got better after practising for couple of hours, just wanna ask one question, which string gauge is best for me?I’m an intermediate player and learned couple of songs,so should I go with .10-.47 or .11-.52(in case of d’addario), the guitar strings which I’m having currently sounds awful,so please suggest me the right gauge.
Hi Lauren, thanks so much for this tutorial! Question: the strumming patterns you give for the song on your website show a strumming pattern #3, which I don't think I see that you use in the video. Did I miss this somewhere?
Lauren, one question - how long did it take you to master this song because, like Paul Simon (esp. the Simon and Garfunkel phase), they do SO much improv on the guitar playing! Thanks!
@@LaurenBateman My guitar teacher right now is teaching me various strumming timing patterns such as strumming on the AND and so on with blanks in between such as 1 (strum) [and 2 no strum] and (strum) and so on. It's so tricky at first since I'm so used to strumming on the downbeats and not the and's. It's a good thing to get good at though. Thank you as always for your reply!
@Lauren Bateman yeah and then you'd miss out on all those embellishments you can play with the G and D chords. But what if you changed keys altogether. Play it in G (basically same chord shapes but no capo)

Great song! Your viewers might want to note that the chord diagram for Dmaj11 isn't correct, but your live demonstration of it is correct.
Thank you!!! 🤦♀️

Yes, the diagram is wrong in the video 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ I fixed it on the website.

A good song. A lot going on. Lol. I'm working on it. Do you think you could give us a lesson on "After the Glitter Fades" by Stevie Nicks
Thank you for the recommendation. I get lots of song requests so I cannot guarantee that I will get to it, but I will definitely add it to my list.

Also, I was admiring the Gretsch on the wall. My first guitar was an Electromatic. Just lovely.
Glad you enjoyed it!

It really depends. The thicker the string you can tolerate the better sound. You will get out of the guitar. I typically use 11s.
Hi Lauren, thanks so much for this tutorial! Question: the strumming patterns you give for the song on your website show a strumming pattern #3, which I don't think I see that you use in the video. Did I miss this somewhere?
Nope. Sometimes I don’t do all the suggested patterns on the site.
Thanks!!
Cool guitar strap
Thank you!
what was the first song you mastered? And which songs inspired you to pick up guitar
First song was probably Come As You Are by Nirvana. Melissa Etheridge songs are what inspired me.
Ah yes the ol' "Boop" chord move......got it 😁
Thanks for watching!
How do you hit the A string without hitting the low E string. You don’t mute the E string?
Precision work with the pick. But also you could do some muting with the fretting hand.
How come there’s a fret skipped in between the pointer and middle finger on the d 11 diagram but she’s not playing it ?
Sorry, there might be an error on the diagram. 😔
Lauren, one question - how long did it take you to master this song because, like Paul Simon (esp. the Simon and Garfunkel phase), they do SO much improv on the guitar playing! Thanks!
Hmmm, when I learned to play this song, I had been playing for a while, so it wasn't too too difficult. I believe I learned it in one week.

Noel Gallagher is my favorite guitar player
Awesome!
Like this song! I just might be able to play it one day, thanks to you!
You got this!
I've been playing this song for a while. Wondering about playing this without a capo and your thougts on transposing it, and whether it's worth it
I prefer with the capo. Without might make for lots of barre chords.
@Lauren Bateman yeah and then you'd miss out on all those embellishments you can play with the G and D chords. But what if you changed keys altogether. Play it in G (basically same chord shapes but no capo)

Welcome!
Thanks!
You bet!
Wow, thank you for the super thanks!!!!
