    "Even the Queen... at her advanced age.... still draws. Makes you proud to be British...or if not British...makes you wish you were." This should be in a Monty Python skit.
    "Avoiding the RED lines like the plague...don't go near them they are deadly!" That worked for me...
    Great instruction, good humour and has me reading my pencils ... Property of the Royal Bank of Canada.
    Cheers

    I really enjoy your videos for both the instructions and your dry humor. With many video tutorials, I find that I have trouble executing the steps on my own after I’ve finished watching. That’s NOT the case with your videos. I’m able to reproduce the designs afterward with no problems. That means the world to me. Thank you so much!

    Thank you so much for your tutorials about Celtic design. I have watched a gazillion of videos about them and I never was able to construct my own. You make a complicated process so easy, now I can do Celtic designs in any sizes. Wow! You are a great teacher. I love your videos, already done some of your kalligraphy excercises, but for a while I will stay with Celtic designs. It is so much fun doing it your way. Great videos, glad I found them. Greetings from Germany.

    I became interested in drawing Celtic knots 30 years ago I bought several books 1st by George Bain, I could not make heads of tails of that one, then I was encouraged when found one by his son Iain Bain, who in his introduction said he could not follow his father's instructions, so set about devising his own method. Well I felt real thick I could follow that one either. I resorted to copy and print to transfer images on to wood my end goal being to carve the the knot. This has it's limitations regards size and design. I am so happy to have found your tutorials You are an excellent instructor I now feel much better equipped to venture off with my own creations. Thankyou

      Thanks for your lovely comment, Ian.
      Yes, the Bain books are great for source material but not very good when it comes to methods of construction.
      I think my way is easier, which is why I made the videos.
      I'm glad you're finding them useful!
      Thanks again, David

    Mehndi is the art of applying temporary tattoos, using a henna paste, often practiced by Asian women to celebrate special events, for example weddings and Eid.
    I really love the idea, and learnt to do it myself. I generally apply floral patterns, but I don't think my brothers too keen on those. LOL.

      I did try a small knot, but I think it was a bit too small, as it is hard to distinguish the pattern. Once a get something reasonable I'll send a picture.

    Hi, I have a question about break lines, can you do them diagonally? Like, does it work if you do them diagonally across a circle, or does it only work out if you do them vertically and/or horizontally? Your videos are awesome, by the way, I've been dying to learn how to draw celtic knots, so thanks!

    Question- what if you began your parallel pairs in the spot right next to where you began? Y’know what I mean… (diagonal & to the upper left). Basically it would’ve made that first pair go in the opposite direction. Okay then. I think I just answered my own question. I don’t think it matters. 💕
    xoxo

  • @lithious
    @lithious 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I tried to do this ahead of the instructions and ended up starting in the "wrong" direction. IE the first parallel lines in the center went in the opposite direction. Is this wrong or can it be done? I could not attempt to figure out how to go about it. But in Mr. Nicholls' previous videos it is stated that you can start anywhere. How do you know if you are going in the "right" direction if there is one? I can provide a picture if needed. These videos are wonderful! I am an aspiring tattooist and am working on my drawing skills.

    • @davidnicholls100
      @davidnicholls100  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's no 'right' direction, you'll just get a mirror image. Always make T junctions from an existing pair and you can't go wrong. Being systematic is vitally important.
      Thanks for your kind comments Jayson ;-)

    I 'm so fond of your drawings, and your great sense of humour!!! DO you have any circular pattern? I bought many years ago a wonderful book in Dublin, but i started only now to try the Celtic Knots. I love your technique, it is the best i found on the net. Thank you so much! :D

      I have done the circular frame last night. I'm so pleased with it, you have no idea! I have also done the 4 harts. I never knew Celtic Design could be so creative and open to experimental art. You are showing so beautifully, and simply how to make wonderful frames and celtic Knots. Thank you so much. I will look at all your videos, ove and over again! Thanks also to the Magic Fairy! She makes a wonderful job! :D ciao. Tiziana

      I was looking for help, about a particular circular "object" that I found in the "Book of Celt", i will tell you the name of it, and the page, soon. However if you have the book, i think you do, it is the last, circular pattern, (page?) composed with only loops. I wonder if you have a nice technique to draw this one too by hand. I have tried it ...it's ok but it is not right, yet. The circle has 24 parts of 15º each. It looks like a medallion, not a frame or a border. Thank you.

      Sorry i made a mistake, the book is" Celtic Art" by George Bain

      If you mean Plate 19 - Design for a greetings card (which is the same as Plare 3. It is exactly the same technique as the circular design that I showed you, except that it is a lot looser and there are no overs and unders. Bear in mind that my cope of Bain is 1977 and there have been many amended editions since, so the plate numbering may be different.

    Lovely design, but if it was a piece of string and you picked it up, wouldn't it unravel? My mind can't turn it around enough to work out if this is the case. I've seen some youtube examples of celtic knots which would, definitely, unravel.

    • @Razzer1356
      @Razzer1356 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      But it's not. Is there some reason this causes you concern? Just curious.

    • @muskndusk
      @muskndusk 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Razzer1356 A Celtic Knot should be just that, a knot, therefore the design is that of something which, if it were a string, would form a knot when picked up, not unravel. That's why it bugs me to see designs which would turn into a straight string.

    • @davidnicholls100
      @davidnicholls100  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      My series is called Celtic Design. Not all Celtic designs are actually knots. Some of the designs using break lines come out this way. It's just a pattern, it either looks OK or it doesn't, and that's up to the viewer to decide.

    • @Razzer1356
      @Razzer1356 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      muskndusk You can certainly make your knots anyway you choose and anyway you find aesthetically pleasing, it's just a name for them. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
