I left mine (iPods 3 ) with the case by accident into the washing machine full cycle for 30 minutes, I noticed them when I was pulling out the clothes, the case was dry and the pods too. I tested em and they worked just fine. Matter of fact, I’m using the babies right now. 😊
The thing I found with gen 3 is that even tho they may work sound vice after getting exposed to water, the microphone often take some heavy damage and result in a significant worse quality and give you that "under water sound". The idea here is that sound will push the water out from the speakers, but the microphone doesn't really have this ability.
I’m often showering with my airpods 2nd gen (~every 2nd day since launch), and have tried going for a swim with them. The microphones are broken, but the sound works perfectly fine. Absurd engineering!
Well this is great to know for brand new AirPods, but as Apple say, the seal is not forever and I guess that if you shower with them all the time for example, eventually the risk of getting them damaged will be higher

They might work but the battery level will disappoint you, what happened with me was one of my airpods fell in water, I soaked it, worked fine but it’s battery duration was considerably reduced than the other one
I accidentally washed my AirPods, and at first the right AirPod’s sound was horrible but corrected itself in less than a day, but the microphones weren’t working, so I ordered some silica gel packets and put my AirPods (without the case) in a ziplock bag with two silica gel packets and they were back to normal the next day. Hope this helps.
i've done this 3 times! washed and dried in the case. This last time the microphone has stopped working but ill let it dry a little more and see what happens.

Well, at least they have some resistance. I just bought a pair of Gen 3s for my jogs. They had a $40 discount brand new, so i went with them instead of the 2nd gen. It's a much better design than the galaxy bud pros i had that were literally made to fall out of your ears every 30 seconds when you run with them
My ones (AP3) went through a cycle in the case and they worked fine, one was quite so I suck the speaker end to get any moisture out and they went back to normal
When I was working at UPS my AirPods gen 2 flew out of my pocket while I was running across the road and flew out of the case and landed in a puddle and some how they survived
i have actually put my first airpods the original ones gen 1 in the washing machine & drier they were in the box & survived i used them for 2 years after that never had an issue it's pretty insane
Apple loves to make tiny updates and hit you over the head along the way with the prices smh. There use to be a time when they made exponentially progressive drops.
I have the 3rd Gen AirPods. I had the right piece in my ear and the left piece was in the case. The case fell into the toilet and I did not hesitate to grab it out. Toilet only had water in it, thank god! After washing my hands I put isopropyl on a paper towel and wiped down the exterior of the case. After I opened the case I found hardly any moisture inside. I wiped down the left piece and the internals of the case again with isopropyl. I don’t have Apple care for this product but luckily it survived.
I have third gen airpods which I got only a few days ago for my birthday and yesterday night when I went to use the bathroom, the case fell in the toilet after falling out of my shorts pocket. I cleaned it out with alcohol and let it dry for the rest of the night and it worked fine. I was wearing the airpods themselves so they didn’t get wet.
seems ive been very unlucky. mine were in their case in a raincoat pocket for about 10 minutes. water got in the zipped pocket (fail), water got in the case (fail), right earphone very quiet (fail)
my AirPods Gen’ 3 been through everything and the results are regretting the right pod is half filled with water to dis day and it js shakes around the pod giving out a crazy bass effect which is not suitable to me it has the same volume but the bass is bad and my left pod has good sound quality but it’s on quiet side and the sum be careful with your your AirPods because you’ll regret it later
My husband didn’t check my coat pockets when washing clothes and he washed my AirPods in the washing machine the buds were still in the case …. I can hear through them just fine but I don’t think the person on the other line can hear me, also seri won’t respond to me when my AirPods are connected to my phone
A little late on this but I have the AirPod pros 2nd gen. The left one was submerged in the pool overnight. I found it cleaned it and dried it. I then plugged it into the case and it is currently charging. Will there be any other ways to try and fix the potential water damage assuming there will be damage?

I just put them both in my head and they both work perfectly fine.!!! I got lucky!!!

The case was in a Dbrand case and when I finally realized what happened, I found them, one of the pods came out during the cycle. Yikes. I left them to dry overnight before attempting to use them and they seem to be okay. 😅😅😅. For now….😅😅😅😅

Just here to testify that I accidentally placed my AirPods without the cover on a washing machine. And after 2 days of leaving it near my window, it's working as normal today :D So don't put it on a case or use it. just let it dry .. perhaps with a hair dryer- it helps.

Use a tack to remove the cotton from the bottom of the microphone and they will start working again.

Some people mistake water resistance with water proof
I washed my short with my airpods in the pocket it was submerged in the water for about 3-5 minutes .

Were these test done on the same airpod or were they all done on a new set?
I just took mine out of the washing machine it is working still but, not the same audio qualities it is much different, and the mic isn't working.

It's IPX4 not IPX7 or IPX8 you can't dunk it in water that'll destroy the tiny motherboard in it.
Those keep falling out of my ear they dont fit properly.
You can blow dry ur AirPods to get all of the air out
