  • Bryan Hayes, Jeff O’Neill and Jamie McLennan are joined by TSN Hockey Insider Chris Johnston to discuss which option is the most likely one for Mitch Marner, traded out of Toronto, he plays out the season without an extension or he’s extend prior to the start of the season, how his situation is different than Leon Draisaitl’s potential extension and more.

Not sure how Marner getting a raise could even be justified. He’s the most overvalued player in league. He has the most lucrative job of any winger in the NHL. Most TOI, gets to be setup forward without the responsibilities of playing center, PP time, prime offensive minutes, plays with the greatest goal scorer in the world, (when he hasn’t, it’s always been with other 40+ goal scorers), gets to play on perimeter while line mates do the hard, dirty work, etc. And he doesn’t drive his own line.
His points are inflated. His job/position he’s had for years is lucrative. See how Domi played in the role for just those few games? He was cashing in.
Marner is an incredibly skilled, soft perimeter winger whose value drops off a cliff during playoff hockey. He’s an accessory piece, yet TO sees him as a top player in the league. If it’s playoff success ya’ll want in TO, get rid of him in favor of a cheaper, more effective forward who plays playoff hockey. You need balls to win in the PO. Will imposing, testosterone type of hockey. Marner just isn’t it. He’s a softer version of a Johnny Gaudreau. And he wants more than 11M 😂.

the problem is other teams will pay that and if he does walk how do you make up those 100pts?

I had to just stop watching this clip. The idea of bringing Marner back or extending him make me want to just give up. Same old garbage. I watched this team religiously from the late 80's until 2018/19. Didn't watch any games during the 4 years of Dubas era afterward. Came back last year with hope. Domi, Bertuzzi, Reaves. Finally Dubas gone. Snot and grit from Treliving. Same shit from the core though playoff time. I'll give Matthews, Nylander, and even Tavares a little bit of slack, but Marner absolutely not. All respect I ever had for him was lost last year when Tkachuk punches and man handles Marner in game 4, and all Marner did was take it without any fight back. What man gets punched in the face and takes it without a hint of fight? He comes back he doesn't come back, whatever... If they ever win, it won't be because of him.

This era is already lost does not matter. We are 10 years and a rebuild away from having a chance again. Shanny s wet dream will have to end eventually.

Leafs should be in a position to seriously cut JT and Mitch’s pay. Marner should get about $8.5 Million and JT should get only $2.5 Million in 3 years. This should greatly help the Leafs separate from - all their recent Core 4 playoff disappointments. 😀

Marner is laughing all the way to the bank. I predict he plays the season out and then walks and the leafs get nothing for him. On the bright side it frees up money. Either way they will still be a playoff debacle because they can't fkn score.

Only way the Leafs get to a trade with Marner is if the fans boo him out of the building come fall--then MM will submit a 1 or 2 team trade list that will leak and the Leafs make a bad trade, retain salary and/or take a bad contract in return just to move the player--this team is unreal.....
