Here's a girl who clearly could have any guy she wants, but instead, is fixated on Ranma because she quite simply doesn't know any better. It really is just an unfortunate mess for everyone involved.

Unlike today's sxitty harem anime where it's a wishful self insert bullc of one male character chased by all female characters, here there are other male characters who have their own shining moments and don't exist only to make the mc look good. I don't think it's right to think of this is a harem anime to begin with. At no point does the series even HINT at the other girls really having a chance with Ranma. It spends it's early chapters cementing the core relationship of the character is with Akane. The entire series' comedy hinges on lots of stubborn crazy people just butting in for increasingly absurd reasons into the already absurd conundrum Ranma and Akane are navigating through, and making things messier as a result.
