Here's a Die Grinder tip: Anyone that's used carbide burrs on steel knows that eventually you'll get a "splinter" in a finger or hand from one of those razor sharp chips, If you can't get it right out, And if you don't have a helpful "assistant" to extract the near invisible little shard, *Use Scotchbrite!* You don't even need to know the orientation of the splinter--You simply move the Scotchbrite in a light circular motion, and it snags the sliver every time!
A journeyman steam turbine mechanic taught me that trick, and I was skeptical until the time came to try it--I've probably used it 10-20 times since I learned it, and it hasn't failed yet.

I've been stick welding for over 40 years. I suggest you just get some scrap metal and practice! I'm not going to knock your welding, but if you're going to continue, get some 6011 and 6013 rods and lay some beads.

    • @philipershler420

This is a good idea. The process of stick welding is more than just poke the rod in a spot and hope for the best. It was not obvious that Ray could even see the arc. Properly done, a stick welder can lay down a bead just like a mig welder. Practice (on a pieces of scrap) might not make perfect. But it will certainly make things better.
If one thinks that buying the cheapest machine available and then stepping right into TIG welding, will result in a
deep dive into disappointment. Unless there’s a need to join aluminum or other “fancy materials” mig welding with or without gas is a much easier process. Once again, with an afternoon of advice from a journeyman welder would be time well spent.

When welding with stick, on most jobs, you will use a 6013 rod.
Clean BOTH parts to be joined.
Strike and maintain as short an arc as possible with the lowest power possible, presenting your rod at about 45 degrees to the plane of the base. If you stop, the slag needs to be removed to prevent inclusions in the weld.
As a stick novice, you did well for laying out your first bead!

He never showed the nut being cleaned (Nylok no less) which may have been stainless and I thought that you needed a special flux core
unless booger style don't matter- if them welds let loose when he's putting the mounts on the frame to the block. that's the risk of serious time waster

I find that if you drill through the broken bolt then get a die grinder with a rotary burr that fits in and cut outward through the bolt (two places 180°opposed) you can basically just remove the two halves that are left, this works on through holes and blind holes

251st! Good afternoon Ray,Lauren,Dave, and Justin! Took welding in shop class in High School. One third of year welding, one third carpentry, and one third plumbing. It was to get us ready for building construction class, from 11th grade and senior year we built a complete home. It was 3 hours a day working in Lebanon Oregon weather. But the sense of accomplishment was overwhelming. I don’t know of any other high school that did what we did. Or even offered classes that was so hands on building a home. Welding was my least favorite classes. It was very dirty, and if you weren’t careful, nasty burns. And of course, all but one shop teacher had missing or disfigured fingers. We did brazing in HS, no stick welders. I was the last of us to experience shop and woodworking before they closed down the programs. Funny thing, the classes were always full, so they didn’t change the curriculum due to lack of demand.

As always, sure hope the family unit is doing well and wish y'all the best bud.

Great video 👍A little cheat for stick welding is drag the rod quickly on the
Earth clamp that warms up the rod and easier to start the weld😊

Also you can bend the rod at an angle to get to hard to reach places and it also puts your hand at a better angle.

I am not a welder - but would recommend practicing welding skills so when the next time comes about you will be better. I have stick welded and it has been many years - take a bit of practice and knowing your welder's settings and which is the appropriate welding rods to use. You got the job done and that is what counts appreciate and look forward to upcoming videos.

Ray just so you know you still have to move the welding rod from piece to piece just like any other thing you would weld your case from nut to mount just a lil so the weld will bound both pieces of metal together 💪🏽

Hey Ray some advice from a welder use some spatter gel on all of your threads it'll protect your threads from damage with all the spatter coming off your puddle believe me low cost saves alot of work if spatter get on them threads your in trouble bolt is damaged so is your nut backing it out 👍

  • @golf25radioman

Breaking an extractor can be bad, but luckily you were in a welded nut. That's about the only situation I would say it wouldn't be a tough one. The welds on that nut are not visible so it's the best case scenario for you to try out stick welding. Gets the job done and we'll only know....shhh don't tell. lol
I was having a bad day, just by chance I came by and saw you posted this video. The day still sucks, but not as bad now. Thanks.🙃

The best luck I've had pulling a broken fastener like that is with a left handed drill bit. Not every time but a lot of times once the bit gets some purchase the broken fastener will back out. Using easy outs is mostly a nightmare scenario.

  • @ForfeMac
    @ForfeMac ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

Those kind of extractors are the best in my experience. I only use them when I'm trying to get a broken bolt out from somewhere I'd really rather not be welding, though.
And you can actually get them out without cutting the bolt off, just put it in the vise with the nut resting the in the jaws, and knock it out with a punch from the bottom, assuming you've drilled all the way through the bolt. Of course, half the time I end up breaking the extractor just like that, but I just weld on a nut and either pull the extractor out like I normally would a bolt, or at least the heat softens the extractor enough I can drill it out.
As for the weld nuts, the nice thing about that is that it doesn't have to look pretty, it just needs to hold the nut in place until you get it bolted, then the nut will do nut things and hold the bolt in place until you try to remove the bolt later and break the tack welds, but that's a problem for future you. They do make special weld nuts that have projections for welding, they don't shrink as much as a regular bolt will after welding so you don't risk binding the bolt on the way in, but you can just chase it with a tap if you don't care to buy the special weld nuts. You can find them at most farm stores and dedicated hardware stores, sometimes the big box stores have them in stock but you'll be paying a premium.
