Im happy I've found your channel! I'm an ICU nurse looking into enrolling/applying a postgrad in MSc Bioinformatics. I know it ain't going to be an easy journey, since the last time I've read about Genomics and Biology in general was about 10 yrs ago! PLUS having ZERO knowledge in Coding -- it'll be a rough ROUGHHHH road, but I can do it and I WILL do it! please keep on posting Georgia!
Hey kitty! Happy to have you here! That’s an exciting move for you. Definitely will be tough, it’s a steep learning curve (what isn’t though tbh). I’m so excited for you 🫶✨💖
Keep us updated. I’m very happy for you and have faith in you! You got this. I’m a CS senior going for my MS thinking of doing bioinformatics since I’m taking a bioinformatics class now where we are cleaning genetic data and creating AI models to test the data with. It’s very fun and I realized this may be something I want to do as a career too. Good luck!! It’s fun.
Hi Goergia, this is inspiring!!! I am a biologist, geneticist focusing wet lab, but I have strong interest in Bioinformatics to analyze Genomics data. I am inspired by your video. I appreciate it very much!!!
I'm starting a new job in bioinformatics. Although I have a solid background in programming, I still need to get familiar with the most common libraries and resources for bioinformatics and this video was a good appetizer :) I'm a new subscriber!
Hi! I'm a master's student in biotechnology and I'm interested in learning both Python and R. Before diving into coding, I'm wondering if it would be beneficial to review basic statistics and mathematics. I'm a bit rusty on those topics and I'm concerned that they might be essential for bioinformatics. What do you think?
Wow super!!! Thank you!!! like people said below super helpful video! I hope to move soon to bioinformatics while I am doing my PhD in Biology, unfortunately I don´t do bioinformtics in my PhD, so I will start this 2024 a Specialization in Bioinformatics at the same time. It will be hard and tough, but I hope to make it. Thanks again, I dream with a Bioinformatics Job!!!!
Super!! Thanks for watching 💖🌟 Ah best of luck in your Biology PhD! Even with bioinformatics as your goal your foundational biology knowledge will set you up to succeed 🌟 even with your biology PhD analysis try and find ways to build in coding your analysis rather than excel etc 🤞 it’s not too tough if you have the perseverance which it sounds like you have!
Hey Georgia, I am from India, I am from wet lab background,I want to go for a fully funded masters program in genomic data science abroad. Can you suggest me something? It will be very helpful. Or if we can connect..
Greetings, Georgia. This is really inspiring. I intend to pursue a Ph.D in Bioinformatics. I need your counsel. I have a good background in Mathematics, Computer Science, and Programming. I am a new subscriber already.
I am a master's student specializing in virology, aiming to delve into bioinformatics, particularly biological systems. I have experience working with Python and R, albeit not in a biological context. I am seeking guidance on how to proceed further in integrating bioinformatics into my virology studies. Your insights would be greatly appreciated. Best regards
Virology and bioinformatics go hand in hand, look at how we used bioinformatic analysis of variants during the covid pandemic! It doesn’t matter if your python and R were in non-biological contexts, having that experience and your masters choice puts you in the perfect position. I would try to make your masters project computational and using bioinformatics , and always code your analysis in python or R (not excel). Try and seek out virology lecturerers/professors at your institute and ask if they know any opportunities where you could contribute to bioinfo in virology/just ask them general advice. It’s an Exciting path you’re on 💪
Right, so I have a bachelors in Physics and I'm currently planning to get my masters in Data Science. I wanna write my masters thesis in something to do with bioinformatics but the thing is, I don't have a biology background. This seems like a rhetorical question but do I really need a biology background to get into this field?
You’re on such a great track here! Writing a bioinfo thesis in your physics degree is a great way to start bridging the gap. There’s so many bioinformaticians who come from a physics background (especially in the more deep learning/computer vision space). One of my old colleges in genomics came into bioinfo from physics and did a masters bioinfo project. You don’t need a formal taught biology background, just the willingness to learn the biology for the projects you’re working on. Excellent plan, best of luck!
@@genomicswithgeorgia Oh that's amazing to hear. Thank you for the information! I intend to stop my education at masters though so if I don't get a PhD in Bioinformatics, do you reckon it'll be enough with just a masters? Judging from your experience, what would you recommend?
I have a chemistry degree, do you think i could take bioinformatics for master?, i heard we need to start using ai etc, i feel like bioinformatics is really good
SQL is an important language to know! I wouldn’t say you need to be a pro but you need to know how to open up a database and wrangle the information you need out of it
Cs grads who taking bioinfo are the most advantages in this field as they have strong fundamental in lots of languages... And its tough to learn a computer language than learning biology. Hence the CS guys cleans the job vacancies... Thats why im into microbio😅
They clean the engineering focused roles, but remember there’s many flavours of bioinformatician. The “biology” focussed ones are in demand too. You keep on doing you and ❤️ the microbio ❤️ haha

What's priceless for learning advice, I kept in mind and applied to my journey.

How is the work-life balance in bioinformatics career?
I’ve reordered a video on this! Will post asap, just dealing with a lot of personal life changing things right now xx
Nice explanation easy and simple 👌 👍

There’s a whole field of cheminformatics! That’s probably your jam.
Georgia, what does a bioinformatics portfolio look like on github?
I need to make a specific video on this, bear with me!
Thanks

Welcome back. I thought you were in Canada
Thanks! I’m back in the UK and back filming videos, feels good 💕
what about SQL
SQL is an important language to know! I wouldn’t say you need to be a pro but you need to know how to open up a database and wrangle the information you need out of it
you need a HPC or a laptop with a lot of ... RAM and storage
You definitely do to deal with large data sets! You can definitely train and practise on dummy data sets on a standard computer :)
hey maam ,i'm an undergrad in bioinf.can u pls suggest me some masters bioinf programmes that are fully funded.
Hey! Which countries are you looking it? 💕

You have a Mac, you're probably using zsh instead of bash.
Not when I’m on the Linux HPC 👀
