Totally agree with you. Foreigner privilege is a blemish on modern China. Perhaps it is fine to treat "guests of the country" with a few perks, but they should not be so excessive as to generate resentment from the local people. China might have come a long way in building modern cities and infrastructures, it still has some distance to go in building within Chinese minds more self-confidence and pride. Not superficial pride about newly found affluence but a heightened awareness of China's uninterrupted civilization, its history in the world, and its resilience to rebound from a century of humiliation.

Thanks for this conversation. It is not entirely surprising for me as an overseas Chinese woman who grew up in a colonized SE asian country to understand that a certain colonial mentality still exists in China and in other parts of Asia. i am sure White foreigners still exude subtle attractiveness due to long time soft power propaganda via Hollywood movies, TV shows, model magazines etc. While China has grown strong these days, and Chinese pride has increased definitely, yet I am not surprised by what you both are sharing regarding perks and privileges given to foreigners in social settings. What surprises me is the granting of privileges at the government level, and educational institutions. That to me is totally unnecessary and unacceptable. I hope Chinese pride spreads, and people need not fawn on white foreigners. I went to China with my white husband years ago, he got all the attention and photo ops, while I was being ignored. I felt pretty uncomfortable! 😬😪🥵

I’m an overseas Chinese 75 yrs old. I was brainwashed since childhood to believe that white culture is superior to all others. Even my mother was convinced to embrace Catholicism at around age 50. Luckily, we never abandoned ancestral worship, Buddhism and Confucianism. White people’s ability to indoctrinate is overwhelmingly strong. I’m the only one in the family who abandoned Catholicism completely. Some of my siblings still practice burning incense sticks for pai pai. Employing Christian religion is one easy way to subjugate a people. It’s been successfully tested. There are very few white people we can trust. Robert Kuhn is one.

I like the way you two discuss this subject that most other foreigners who are living in China avoid mentioning. Not all foreigners in China whether they are long term residents or tourists get more attention or better treatment than they deserve. I find it ridiculous that many English speaking foreigners in China speak in full English sentences to Chinese people especially old Chinese grandmas and grandpas who can't possibly know what they, but those foreigners expect them to understand and reply in English! What if Chinese tourists speak Chinese to non-Chinese people in USA or Europe, then expecting every non-Chinese person to reply in Chinese? 😂
Most of those foreigners don't even want to use translation app on their phone. Google is not accessible in China but Microsoft is not, Microsoft translate is free and accessible in China, there are many other free translation apps accessible in China, and there are some downloadable translation apps that don't need internet access after they are downloaded into the phone.

To Julie: comments seeming to over-appreciate your level of beauty are not just purely about your physical appearance. Women in your league (for lack of a better analogy) generally have far poorer maturity, self-awarness, open-mindnes and sincereity. They tend to be more flacky, entitled and aloof due to over-reliance on their good looks for their identity. That you are the polar opposite of that makes you exceptional, where your personality is attractive as well, which amplifies the impact of your physical appearance. So much so that when people see you, they see not only a woman who is physically attractive, but a woman of true beauty inside and out.

20:46 As a Chinese guy living in Europe who currently travelling in Denmark with Interrail, and has visited Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense, Helsingor (Kronborg), Middelfart and Kolding. This is spot on. I have got two creepy people approached me in 30 minutes when I am doing my transfer in Copenhagen Central Station which is just totally unpleasant. For me it gives me an impression that, it is just a less dense(population wise) and more expensive version of the Netherlands. (Of course the architecture is a bit different for old buildings though).
In addition, the DSB trains always has some delays and the announcement sometimes gives wrong information of the train(made me miss the connection). Seats are relatively comfortable in the DSB trains but if you are in the main train line such as Aarhus to Copenhagen, or sometimes the border crossing Fredericia to Flensburg, Germany then good luck to find a seat. It also do not offer the high speed train on par with German ICE/French TGV either.
For the point of people thinking that certain countries are paradise, I do think that is due to the asymmetric information they have. For Denmark specifically, I bet 90% of people in China know only Copenhagen and Hans Christian Andersen therefore not surprise why they think that because they don't receive enough information about it.

As a result of colonisation and subsequently the industrial revolution the west became the dominant power economically, militarily and culturally via their media for over two hundred years. The consequence of this is everywhere in the world particularly in the colonised countries they were the top dogs and therefore the locals tend to look up to them and even aspire to be like them.
Fortunately this ingrained outlook is slowly disappearing as the global south particularly asian countries start to rise economically, militarily and culturally.
To a lesser extent , the other element is that in east asian countries through their confucian culture , guests are treated very generously and respect for hierarchy is very much encouraged.

Let's put it this way, can a random foreigner travel to the EU with no teaching qualifications and then get a job just because they look foreign and expect an above average salary and possibly have the school give you free housing? That is an insane amount of privilege. Yeah, China does require companies to try and use Chinese workers in most other fields, so you'd usually need two years of relevant experience to get a job in a sector.

it's a complex topic. Being a white guy in China, I'm aware of privilege but certainly don't want it, if I get beckoned to the front of a queue I'm embarrassed to jump the queue. On the other hand, it's hard not to feel offended when I'm ignored in a restaurant or shop because the staff don't want to deal with a foreigner, even though I understand why! Of course, in any society, rarity or the unusual is attractive and exotic. China is still very much closed off to the world (which is not always a bad thing!) and foreigners, who are notably different in appearance (especially white skin and blonde hair) may arouse curiosity and attraction, and indeed suspicion, but this is the same anywhere in the world where people are faced with something alien, rare or unusual, it's not exclusively a Chinese thing. The cruel reality: how much social resources, rights or overall social status an immigrant can enjoy in the local society mostly depending on the overall strength and how big the say in international community of your mother country.
Most people don't understand such simple but profound truth. If you want to be treated equally, hard working, pay respect and good will won't work, the only solution is to make your country strong! That is how the world runs.

as for models you could argue there are also a disproportinate number of black and brown models in the UK and in the media,.Almost every advert has a non white person in it even though black people make up only 3.5 percent of the population. Do we call that black privilege though?

@bb2866 There's an enormous difference here, and I think you know that as well. One country has a colonial history and now has around 18% of its population being non-white. It's pretty different from China, where less than 1% of the population is non-chinese, yet white people are promoted as the beauty standard. They aren't shown to promote diversity or that beauty can come in multiple shades of skin. They are there for the exact opposite reason.

Probably china experts in international politics know about it better than you, why it is so. There are politics, economics, planing for future proffesionals exchanges and cooperation with other countries, it all needs planning. So what plans mađe you discuss something that is of no of your competence? As well some future prosper?

That's so true. I have soo wanted to go to China figuring I could finally shed my 2nd class status. But now, why bother. At least we here in the US know its wrong and are trying to combat it every day. China seems more backward than I realized. We used to look toward China as our savior. That was a joke.

I disagree that the worship of whiteness has anything to do with either colonialism or Western wealth. In Japan, a country that never experienced Western colonialism and has been economically on par with white countries for over a century, the exact same kind of white worshipping exists. It's not quite as bad as it is in China, but it's still awful.
The Japanese worship all white people, even those from Eastern Europe who come from countries much poorer than Japan.

Japan was occupied by the west after the war and many here would argue they still are, considering they still have to have American military stationed in their country and have limits put on their own military autonomy. Also having lived in Japan prior, my experience is very different. Japanese people to some extent find white people attractive/exotic, but not better. They consider themselves to be the same as westerners. Hence why they respect white people more than other Asians. Whom they simply don't believe to be equal to them.
I think saying colonialism has no part to play would be a little odd. It is well-known and accepted that the century of humiliation greatly impacted the pride of Chinese people and then they went on to receive the most intense anti Asian propaganda afterwards. They still get targeted in such an extreme way to force them to bow down to Western civilization. Of course that leaves an impact

While Japan did not have to endure colonialisation, the European/ America colonialisation effort of its neighboring countries (China and Korea) did leave its impact. That is what the whole "Leave Asia behind" (and joined Europe) slogan by the Japanese government during the 20th century was all about. The imperial Japan was so afraid of colonialisation that they immidiately stripped out traditionalism in favor of Western political thought, industry, culture, and ofc imperial expansionism .

@@jiayiandjulieinchina The fawning attitude that Japanese have towards white people is not something that happened after WWII. They were like this since Matthew Perry forced open the country in the mid 19th century.
And while I agree that Japanese don't simp for white people quite as hard as Chinese do, it would be a stretch to say that they see themselves as equals. White people in Japan enjoy an enormous advantage in dating and modeling. I lived there for many years, and I never met a single white guy who didn't have a Japanese girlfriend by the end of his first month, not one. White women had a harder time only because Japanese men are too terrified to approach them.
