- Toto - Live at Montreux 1991
Live at the Montreux Casino, Switzerland July 5th 1991.
By the time Toto was invited to play the famed Montreux Jazz Festival in 1991, their success had already been assured. Having established themselves in the ‘70s as an elite band of session players-turned-chart toppers, they were in the midst of a European tour when the call came. It was an appropriate fit. Not only were they able to spotlight their two most prominent hits of the time -- “Africa” and “Rosanna” -- but they were also allowed to express a more progressive posture that would come with their next album, 1992’s Kingdom of Desire. In short, the band were in peak prowess.
Sadly, this marked one of their final appearances with drummer Jeff Porcaro, who passed away the following year. But as Live at Montreux 1991 demonstrates, the core band - Pocaro, his brother Mike on bass and mainstays, singer/guitarist Steve Lukather and keyboard player keyboardist/vocalist David Paich were in prime form.

Lyrics:
I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
She's coming in twelve-thirty flight
Her moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
I stopped an old man along the way
Hoping to find some old forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say
"Hurry, boy, it's waiting there for you"
It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had
The wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless longing for some solitary company
I know that I must do what's right
Sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti
I seek to cure what's deep inside
Frightened of this thing that I've become
It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had
"Hurry, boy, she's waiting there for you"
It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had - เพลง

That bass playing is absolutely perfect. Some great uses of the 5th string too.
Mike is a pioneer of 5-string bass.
If he hadn't kept using, it wouldn't have spread as much as it is now.

Jeff Porcaro was simply one of the finest, most musical drummers I've ever heard -- just absolutely solid rhythm and great dynamics. I was heartbroken when he died. He added so much to the music of other great musicians.
True. Best drummer
May he rest in peace
Super Musik & Groove
i agree
True..beats from the greats made it his own with more colors in it
Mike Porcaro was one of the most underrated bassists ever! We miss you, man! 😪
to tell the truth...Toto is an underrated band
@@ibanezsoir Amen! Why they're not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a mystery to me. I don't know of another band that is more deserving of that honor, but the powers that be in the HOF are known for playing politics with who gets in and who doesn't. I just hope it happens while the remaining original Toto members are alive to attend the ceremony.
Comment ça sous estimé ? Par la profession ou des membres du groupe ? En tout cas du groupe, c etzitcelui qui était très discret et humble. Il est mort de maladie en 2015. Si vous pouvez m en dire plus dur lui. Merci infiniment. ( PARIS LE 22 Avril 2024)
Didn't have to look far for the first "underrated" comment here.
...and the drumer too...
Steve Lukather looks like about 7 different people across his career
and the poor guy never had a good hair day in his life
🤣🤣🤣👍🏻
HA, I wonder who hes gonna be in 2020
Every 7 years a dedicated guitarist who works very hard becomes so accomplished in the instrument that they achieve the highest rank of Steve Lukather and take the old one's place.
Lol
Jeff was one of a kind. I miss that dude.
Jeff’s fill at 3:45 is amazing!!!!
I disagree
Rest In Peace Jeff Porcaro, one of the best drummers in the history of music
You will be missed!!
And Mikey too xx
Thank you!
Simon Philips had some huge shoes to fill and fill them he did.
@@BassmanII could you imagine the nerves when he first started but he did good
@@BassmanII That he did, he was the best drummer for Toto after the legend, Jeff. The two biggest losses Toto ever had, in my opinion.
So sad that the camera crew virtually ignored Jeff Porcaro, one of the greatest rock drummers of all time.
No surprise. They usually focus most attention on singers' faces :(
They had no backline camera. Kind of an obvious oversight.
Yes !! I'm very sad for that details ....im a drummer too , it's very sad Jeff the most important drummer in THE world ....and the cámara ignore him ....
They didn’t know then what we do know, Jeff is one of the greatest drummers and a musical genius of all time
Seems like they did film him some but must be something wrong with the editors...
Some of the best musicians ever. Jeff Porcaro was a savage groove beast
Is it just me or is the audio quality off the charts for this live performance? What a stunning song, can never get enough off it!
It sure is: this is pretty much a tech demo for Sony having been recorded in HD video (1125 line HDVS) and HD audio (16 bit 96Khz PCM)

Jeff Porcaro = Often imitated, never duplicated.
Even though Jeff is gone his music lives for eternity. RIP to the 🐐
Those who say they do not like TOTO basically just because they NEVER saw them live. Even Eddie VanHalen said "Toto is the greatest band ever" & said "these guys are the best musicians on the planet"... now thats an honor....

Goosebumps! First time to see Jeff on africa playing live.
No, Jeff is unique. 1 in a million is like saying Jeff Porcaro is one of around 8000 people.
Jeff Porcaro's performance is godlike.
And will die exactly one year after. Huge lost.
His timing. His feel. His ability to blend into the song. Pure magic.
Indeed. He is a drum god. I rather hesitate to use the word god usually.
Jeff's smiles while he plays and sweat running off Mike's face as he plays just breaks my heart. A stage full of true musicians, thanks to whoever recorded this for posterity.

Wow this performance. So strange too because the quality of this video is impecable it's like it was filmed yesterday. So weird seeing the Porcaro brothers so young and lively and knowing they're not here with us anymore. Breaks my heart. Always loved this song
HAPPY BIRTHDAY JEFF PORCARO!
Listen to the Rosanna "Isolated Drums" track, mind blowing. Porcaro was a human drum machine. Simply the best.
Got to see that right now
Wait. That really doesn't make sense. Was he a human or a machine?
I recently started drumming again after a very long layoff. That Purdie Shuffle with the Bo Diddley kick drum beat is kicking my ass.

Maestro Jeff at his peak
Jeff Porcaro was an awesome drummer.. He always smiled, because he loved what he did! He is in the Top 100 Drummers for a reason. No they can Play together in heaven...
I still say, very stongly, that anyone who wants to play the drums, not as a soloist, but as an integral part of a band, listen to Jeff Porcaro. He set a gold standard. I've been playing for 35 years and still hope someday to come close to the standard he set.
Yup, no need to be a drum solo master, just be solid, tasteful, and in the pocket.
The conga player isn’t bad either!
@@chezchezchezchez Chris Trujillo.
Just impeccable!! Everything he put his sticks to rocked. All my life I listened to music he played, and didn’t know who he was. Total icon.
Amen. Agreed totally.
So lucky to have seen Jeff Porcaro very early in his career. My wife and I marveled at this 17 year-old kid drumming for Sonny & Cher at a March 19, 1972 concert in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Then two years later we recognized him tandem drumming alongside Jim Hodder at our first Steely Dan concert on April 21, 1974 at the U. of Toledo. He would contribute mightily to their 1975 album "Katy Lied" and later to Boz Scaggs' "Silk Degrees." Such a prodigy that he was drumming on TV's "Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour" while he was still in high school.
andyinoregon you are sooooooo blessed to have had this experience. Jeff is my fav
@@jimmorrison5604 I still remember Porcaro and Hodder drumming the rest of the band off the stage during Steely Dan's final encore that Sunday night in Toledo. He had just turned 20 less than three weeks before the concert.
