  • Substack is a blogging platform that combines email marketing, publishing and the design infrastructure to enable paid subscriptions. In this tutorial for Substack I'll explain everything. Get your custom domain name at Namecheap: davidutke.com/namecheap

    00:00 Intro
    "Substack is an American online platform that provides publishing, payment, analytics, and design infrastructure to support subscription newsletters. It allows writers to send digital newsletters directly to subscribers. Founded in 2017, Substack is headquartered in San Francisco, California."
    00:05 Substack features and pros and cons
    This publishing platform is free to use and has built in email marketing and analytics. You can also have your content locked behind a paywall. So if you're looking to build subscription revenue Substack is ideal.
    The email marketing though is pretty basic. You write a blog post and then choose to send it out to your list or not, or to your paid subscribers. You can setup a welcome email, but that is the only built in automation.
    You're also quit limited with your design. Substack is pretty cookie-cutter in appearance and you have minimal customization. Last, as a free service Substack does take a transaction fee off your sales.
    04:33 Substack tutorial for beginners
    Learn everything you need to know to get started with Substack. From publishing tips, to customization and setting up your paid subscription.
    18:58 Is Substack worth it / Risks?
    Yes. What's great about Substack is that you can get started totally for free and grow with the platform. But long term you're probably better off with Ghost as it's open source and they don't charge any transaction fee.
    Substack is not open source obviously so if they go out of business or another company buys Substack, you're building your business on top of a platform where you don't make the rules.

    Substack is similar to Ghost, an open source blogging platform with a focus on blogging and paid subscriptions too. Here is a breakdown on how the compare: th-cam.com/video/NxqLcPPu_Zg/w-d-xo.html

    Love this very helpful video! I'm using it to babystep myself thru the posting of my first newsletter. One question I am having an issue with is that when I added some you tube links, url's, the resultant thumbnails are so large they take up the almost the width of the page. The same size as the ones in your video, which is fine but I cant figure out how to adjust the size of them, ideally make then smaller. Or have varied sizes depending on the specific post. (I did write to Substack a while back, but...) anyway any insights are greatly appreciated -- Cheers DP

    Where you can add a link, can't you select the icon and write your own code to launch the link to a new tab?

    Okay but how are certain pages formatted with three columns? Is it because they have their own domain and they are designing it outside of substack?

    How to make the landing page on Substack like a magazine with various headings and articles. I've seen this on Substack. But since I'm new to Substack I don't know how to do this. Can you explain please?

    Substack's UX is a total nightmare of confusion, competing settings and lack of clarity.

    Like the video Any idea how to go about adding a section? Not a new newsletter, but separate section....Substack responses to this question are utterly overly complex and ungermane. Thsx, just in case!

    In regards to the new section. I want one podcast to bring my writing to life through voice but another that is conversations with me and others. So you suggest making a new section for this?

  • @stevechapple4246
    @stevechapple4246 ปีที่แล้ว

    basic question: how can you keep adding emails and keep sending out the Welcome column to the new people you add? do you have to have your big list ready and send out all at once, or can you keep adding? then later you do your 2nd col.

    • @DavidUtke
      @DavidUtke  ปีที่แล้ว

      Content that's already published, you'll have to delete it then publish it again to send it out to new people you add. Not idea, but subscribers get new content after they sign up.

    thanks for your video and question: does the initial "coming soon" post disolve after you've made your first "real post" or do it need to be manually deleted? thank you

    • @DavidUtke
      @DavidUtke  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "Coming soon" is a post and yes you have to manually delete it.

    RSS is not dying XD XD that is like saying HTML is dying. And I mean if you consider where we are going with IPFS then maybe, but that still is a ways off. The point is that statement was blatantly false.

    Good tutorial but like drinking from a firehose. Too much info too fast for real comprehension...at least for a septuagenarian. Looks like a good fit for our little professional organization.

      What a great image. Exactly. I have just discovered Substack and it seems a good idea, but their website gives me no idea how it works and what it looks like, once you're up and running. They just invite you to 'get started' before you have a clue what you are letting yourself in for. There is, apparently, no link to a help-line for personal enquiries, only FAQs. This video is similar, it starts in the middle instead of on square one. I have given up after three minutes. Why the Hell can presenters of 'how to' videos on YT not realise that there are complete beginners in the world who need to have everything explained, word by word? This video has deterred me from signing up to Substack, not helped me.
