I have had several rotaries starting in 1974 with the RX2; i overhauled that one because of faulty o-rings, and did research with Jay Storer (Peterson publications) into bridge porting; supercharging; anti-reversionary extraction exhaust headers, locked hardened stationary gears, injection and internal relieving techniques for running up 14,000 rpms. Ran a bug eye sprite in gymkhanas with a rotary.... never had to shift! Small the size and weight they make great aircraft and power plants.
the rotary engine burns oil by design, unlike piston engines that burn oil as they wear out. the oil lubricates the apex seals and eccentric shaft. The rotary engine is just as reliable as a piston engine though. When a person says a rotary engine is not reliable they dont know what they're talking about, they modded their car improperly or didn't take care of their engine. It's a high maintenance engine but it's worth the time and effort.
I saw an AWD trueno 2 years ago in my ricer days, it was powered by 2 Turbo Twincam engines,1 front on back and each produced 250 BHP so all in all a 500 BHP 86.
The rotary engine doesn't have heads or head seals. It has apex seals and side seals. If the engine is taken care of those seals will last just fine. Also, the smoke is not from the oil, they don't burn that much; the smoke is from running really rich on boost, which is often done on turbo engines to keep combustion temperatures down.
Rotary engines have a very smooth torque curve, meaning its power band extends through the entire RPM range. This makes the power to weight ratio exponentially better than a 4AGE. In terms of weight, a 2-rotor engine falls around the same weights as most I4 motors, while the 3-rotor 20b weights slightly more for obvious reasons.
Actually the righteous airbrushed volcano painting doesn't really add any horsepower; but most people think it adds like 100 to 200 horsepower.... The erupting volcano implies unlimited power under the hood, so most people point and stay out of my way...Except chicks, they are totally drawn to it. The mountain mural on the side is cool too, but it was made for a van. Chicks like to sit in my Vette and play with my C.B. radio. They never seen one before.
I'm in Australia. Here it is usually quite hard to revert from injection to carb and be legal due to the loss in emissions control. With the way fuel price's are here most would be considered nuts (no offense) to do away with the injection, & N20 is illegal on the street here. Yes it can be hard to tune, mainly due to the necessary timing & fueling changes, but with injection it is far easier to do acurately AND reliably. I would strongly suggest investing in an a/market ecu, injectors & pump.
im a huge fan of both mazda and toyota so this is a hell of a great hybrid, seen a conversion just like this a sevenstock 7 back in 2005,that car was rediculous....that must have been puttin down 700+bhp...great video...
You are correct about the size. The 13b (2 rotor) is approx 1.3 Liters, and the 20b (3 rotor) is approx 2.0 Liters. But, the size of the compression chamber is not the only factor in HP.
a 20b in a hachiroku man that thing flew! all of prob around 920-30kg of it prob running at least 2 bar looking at the size of that snail. i too love toyotas and mazdas. currently in the market for either a supra or an rx7 series 8
exactly. although many comment-ers have picked up a wrench in their lives, some havent, and those are the people i give a big 'fuck off' to in regards of all the REAL tuners. stop argueing and go build your own 1000 HP perfectly balanced p/w ratio super fast v8/rotary powered machine tuners/highly tuned unique cars deserve respect, jdm, usdm, euro, everyone has their tastes, but it all adds up to what we all do it for in the end... that satisfaction and speed
@Zeggawong power only ofsets weight in acceleration. Extra power isnt going to help you turn and brake better. And it may not seem like much, but that weight really adds up.
Have you seen the 1j and 2j swaps done into an fc the results are noooice. Still love my rotor but if I were to get pistons again I would have this conversion but more from a torque, reliabilty, and strength point of view. My current engine cost me 5500 in the end. If Id known it was going to go that high (fucked rotor housings from previous owner) I would have gone the conversion. Love the 1 & 2js but love my rotor too.
@liddoaznkakashi i have a feeling its been swapped to LHD to make more room for the turbo/exhaust system on the right side of the engine bay by moving the steering column et al to the left
Lol guys they do drive on the right hand side, it's not the angle. The white sprinter has the steering on the left side as that is the only way to fit a 20B into an ae86, the steering column apparently gets in the way.
True. I've heard of people reverse-importing older Japanese cars from the US back into Japan for years. Although it's usually rare collector's cars that are now harder to find in Japan such as early Datsuns, Celicas, and early rotary cars like the RX-3 and R100...
This is one of my new favourite vids on TH-cam. I can't understand that much, but I can tell you what "ni-ju-bi fu-rii ro-ta" means. I can also tell you that when he fired up the hachi he said "woooaaa awesome. This definitely isn't a hachi-roku."
@LandonGear Yes, You are right; it is absolutely correct to call everything that makes up a portion of a Wankel engine a "Wankel _____". (As in Wankel bolt or Wankel port, Wankel exhaust) ...BTW, it is totally awesome your Uncle is Keiichi Tsuchiya and I think you did a great job in that movie!☺
nah if you ever seen inside of a FD's Engine bay, the engine itself its pretty small, what takes up the space in the engine bay is the piping but elsewise the engine itself is pretty small.
@psychoninja911 I know lmao its funny if it does roll foward it catches on the rear wheel. Rotaries at times dont even have that much compression to hold the car in a gear. I left mine on first and in the morning found it backed up a bit,
@kennethj1956 Look at the video again ar 3:15-3:30 it clearly shows a 20b (3 rotor) out of a Eunos Cosmo. It looks to be changed from twin turbo to a large single turbo. Bouns points for the V mount intercooler & radiator
i think his 86 is LHD for the same reason we have people in the US with RHD, its different, unsual or JDM? But it looks like he is a big a USracing fan cuz he is wearing an NHRA shirt, and I've read a mag with closer specs on the car and he has American stuff on it like a Fram oil filter, Sunpro gauges and Simpson racing accessories , but still its on badass ride it's the Japanese version of a Pinto with a blown 347stroker!!haha that would be a cool match.
my mistake on the wording as you are entirely right that it has no valve cover. intake and exhaust are simply ports cut in the rotor housing. never the less the Trade marked 3rotor logo is a mazda's as well as the video saying specifically what the engine is 3 times in the video as a "20b"
Actually stock, the 20B engine puts out 300 hp and 300 ft/lbs of torque. Upgraded these engines can go on quite a bit higher. With that large single snail in place that engine is definitely putting out more than stock, though I can't say for sure just how much. (I assume it's quite a lot since the video shows some crazy acceleration).
well i did order a delta 272 cam and AEM t/gear, jus waitin to get em in. i took off the FI and are putting on a Holley four barrel carb. im gonna make a fiberglass airbox/intake chamber as well. oncei learn to put videos on here ill let you know. im shootin for 175 hp and maybe 150 torgue. in all actuallity itll feel like way more b/c i took off over 400 lbs of the CRX
To everyone thinking Wankel "INVENTED" the Wankel Rotary engine, you're wrong. The rotary engine has been around for a while. Wankel just pretty much perfected it. Hence why they chose to name it after him.
Actually, left hand drive cars are quite common in Japan. Most European and continental cars in Japan are LHD. It's weird that they don't bring in the RHD version of the cars eventhough it's in Asia.
EnzosRus, why are you flipping out about this? The guy could have gotten the whole car LHD or just got the parts to make it that way. Who cares? I swear it's not worth freaking out about. I've rebuilt several 86s and can say with certainty that the swap is not hard, especially if you have the fabrication expertise to put a 20B into that chassis. I don't know where you live, but it must be on the coast or something. Here in the midwest, my friends have 6 AE86s between 3 people. They're out there.
Nice choice's but personally I would keep fuel injection system & save to upgrade it later, i.e. fuel pump, injectors, management & dyno tune. You'll get far more out of a set of cams & injection vs same & the holley, then there's the whole economy issue as well but as I have said it all depends on the purpose of the car. And is it legal. The holley thing you would never legal here. I'm guessing it is a street car. I'm making 300@whp. So fun. you'll want more Nice job on the weight reduction.
Love the potential of the rotary engine, and this car is INSANE fast but the swap woulda made more sense if the rotary didn't have so many reliability/longevity issues. An interesting swap would have been a Hayabusa or ZX/ZZR-14 engine with a turbo slapped on it. Haha. Badass car regardless!
I've got nothing against rotary engines but, without a turbo the torque is pretty weak and alot of the time you need to have the car bouncing of the rev limiter to get the power, very innovative design though.
The rotary exhaust ports are on the right. I am thinking that is why it is a LHD. I do not think you can fit the steering column, turbo & exhaust all on the right :)
damn. did anyone notice the trueno is a left hand car not a JDM right hand car? well i still prefer 4AG over rotary. balance is everything. but dang... still gotta give him props. see how fast the trueno took off at 1:50. sweet shit man...
I concur, most of the bastards like that are the rich ones that are pissed that they spent 100k on a ferrari when a modified 86 like this could beat it on a track.
yeah, that's true, the fb, fc, and fd are more sportier looking than the ae86, but the look on the guys' faces behind him, when he zooms away from them is priceless... you gotta admit. ;)
Sickest 86 on the planet. Bar-none.
LHD car, NHRA t-shirt, Sunpro gauges.. this guy must be a USDM fan
Well put. I'm glad to see someone on TH-cam who isn't stupid and actually speaks the truth.
Hehehe, this video is nice.
At 1:49 you can see the guys reaction change from " Hey look it's a AE86, lets race him" into a "WTF OMG!!!" in a instant.
the rotary engine burns oil by design, unlike piston engines that burn oil as they wear out. the oil lubricates the apex seals and eccentric shaft. I like how the driver was wearing a NHRA shirt.
Added to favs.
i love how there all like thirty and still cruising the streets in an 86..hatchi roku = awsome
OMG, I have been looking for this video clip for like the last 6-7 years now and finally came across it (by mistake) , fucking amazing.
I saw an AWD trueno 2 years ago in my ricer days, it was powered by 2 Turbo Twincam engines,1 front on back and each produced 250 BHP so all in all a 500 BHP 86.
sick conversion, that thing is a monster....

P.S. LordJessieD, I'd be willing to bet you're right on the LHD conversion being neccesitated by or helping with the 3 rotor installation.
I'm in Australia. Here it is usually quite hard to revert from injection to carb and be legal due to the loss in emissions control.

i dont know much about rotary engines, but i agree that the 4AGE is one of the best engines made in the 4cyl category.
I always love watching this video.
gotta love japanese ppl, they take things way past the extreme, great ppl!
Holy shit a 20b in one of the worlds greatest lightwiegt well balance body and frame car.. and you got youresef a machine for conering and draging
Holy sh*t my jaw dropped at the 1:45 mark. Incredible acceleration.
scary!! 5 minutes ago I just wondered to myself if that set up would work and i just ran into this video randomly...
You are correct about the size. The 13b (2 rotor) is approx 1.3 Liters, and the 20b (3 rotor) is approx 2.0 Liters. But, the size of the compression chamber is not the only factor in HP.
omg that is frakin fast. agreed he went into hyperspace!!
didnt expect it to be that fast :P cant wait til i get my 86 ;)
this dude has all the right reasons to rock an "NHRA" tshirt too
i love what he did with that86 put a 20B rotary awsome
Damn now that's zoom zoom fer ya. Haha. Gotta love rotaries, only if someone can figure out how to make them last longer and not eat up so much fuel.
dream car. That's just a beautiful thing.
1:48 insaaaane take-off
3:12 "three rottaaaaaa"
I love that "woooooaahhhhhhh" they do lmao
holy shit that acceleration is nuts!
Wath a setup dude nice one!!!!
WOW thats some beast of an acceleration
holy shit lol, that pulled away so quickly.
a 20b in a hachiroku man that thing flew! all of prob around 920-30kg of it prob running at least 2 bar looking at the size of that snail. i too love toyotas and mazdas. currently in the market for either a supra or an rx7 series 8
WOOO nice!!!! nice build!!
its a racing breed engine, capable of revving up to and over 10,000 RPM... couple with the lightweight body and you have a triple rotor'd destroyer.
Makes me want to buy a 20B and install it in a Mazda Rx7 FD3s... so nice..
exactly. although many comment-ers have picked up a wrench in their lives, some havent, and those are the people i give a big 'fuck off' to in regards of all the REAL tuners.
stop argueing and go build your own 1000 HP perfectly balanced p/w ratio super fast v8/rotary powered machine

ABSOLUTE GENIUS!!!!
@Zeggawong power only ofsets weight in acceleration. Extra power isnt going to help you turn and brake better. And it may not seem like much, but that weight really adds up.
I love those rims. A3A advans. I needs to get me a set like that
Have you seen the 1j and 2j swaps done into an fc the results are noooice.

oh damn i didnt see that part, thanks for clearing that up.
@liddoaznkakashi i have a feeling its been swapped to LHD to make more room for the turbo/exhaust system on the right side of the engine bay by moving the steering column et al to the left

3 rotor is a f*cking expensive swap too. Whoever made that car not only had the brains of albert einstien but a ass load of money.
This is one of my new favourite vids on TH-cam.
I can't understand that much, but I can tell you what "ni-ju-bi fu-rii ro-ta" means.
I can also tell you that when he fired up the hachi he said "woooaaa awesome. This definitely isn't a hachi-roku."
wow crazy!!! were nice vid ;D love it TY...
Id love to get my hands on a 86 like that damn!

Bouns points for the V mount intercooler & radiator
damn that fast. its like the red ae86 didnt move at all
i think his 86 is LHD for the same reason we have people in the US with RHD, its different, unsual or JDM? Rotor & piston combination.
Lol good one.
20B is the ultimate engine
awesome video
holy shit, i remember watching this clip many years ago, wow this car fucking kills
this kinda reminds me of the cannonball run movie :)
Sick video!!
+1 for having the same wheels as me! haha
holysteamingcrabballs batman! that thing is a rocket!!!
Just I have expected, Has a SMOOTH and AGGRESSIVE engine sound. Much to like the RX-7 FC and FD, so a RX-8.
That was fuckin' FAST!
1:48 - never gets old!
that thing looks right at home.
i'm not one for blasphemy but
HOLY FUCK THATS INSANE!!
i love the Sprinter and the 20b
= car equivalent to BABALITY!
my mistake on the wording as you are entirely right that it has no valve cover. intake and exhaust are simply ports cut in the rotor housing. never the less the Trade marked 3rotor logo is a mazda's as well as the video saying specifically what the engine is 3 times in the video as a "20b"
yes and a higher compression. Rotor weight and apex seals is different too..... but that is getting picky :)
HOLY SHIT. that chino just shitted on them. 20b rotary is hard to come across of.

To everyone thinking Wankel "INVENTED" the Wankel Rotary engine, you're wrong. The rotary engine has been around for a while. Wankel just pretty much perfected it. Hence why they chose to name it after him.
that is one juiced AE86, luff.
Actually, left hand drive cars are quite common in Japan. Most European and continental cars in Japan are LHD. It's weird that they don't bring in the RHD version of the cars eventhough it's in Asia.

muythaibxr, so true everything about these engines is great but the apex seals which can be replaced with better ones and it will last forever
1:50 bye bye
thanks, i did consider this, btw the last time i drove a left hand drive car, i kept punching the door looking for the gear stick,
*OUCH*
I LOVE their reaction! HAHAHA awesome EEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
as boxy as the AE86 is a wing front lip and lowered it is very aero dynamic
Nice choice's but personally I would keep fuel injection system & save to upgrade it later, i.e. fuel pump, injectors, management & dyno tune. HE'S SQUIEEZING THE BOTTLE!
wt bjeebus that took off faster than i could understand!!!
The rotary exhaust ports are on the right. I am thinking that is why it is a LHD. I do not think you can fit the steering column, turbo & exhaust all on the right :)

If forced induction ruins the balance then it just means you have no control of your right foot. The engine does what you tell it to.
I concur, most of the bastards like that are the rich ones that are pissed that they spent 100k on a ferrari when a modified 86 like this could beat it on a track.

@adinlouw I'm pretty sure he imported it from somewhere because all of the ae86 in japan have been modified and is rare to find one that's not.
