When have Russians ever taken responsibility for what they do? It is always, "We were forced to do that" or "You left me no choice and I had to do that." Perhaps that is why Russia keeps wanting and getting autocrats like Putin. If Russians had individual freedom to chose what to so then they would have to take responsibility for what they did. However, with an autocrat in rule the individual Russian just say they were forced to do what they did. Now, I know there are Russians who want personal freedom, but never seem to be enough of them to change how their country behaves.

Every time a pow brings up that they "were working in transporting food, etc" it should be stated that by doing so they were enabling other Russians to shoot at Ukrainians. If they went to Ukraine for financial reasons, they should be asked why they didn't rob a bank in Russia instead. If they indicate that this would be illegal, then they should be asked if it was legal or illegal to be part of an invading force of Ukraine.

It's bizarre, how so many of these POWs insist they didn't go to Ukraine to fight, to kill. I find it impossible to believe that so many went believing they would not be involved in combat. It's like they just automatically lie, because they want to placate their captors. From what I've heard, some of them, when they're exchanged, change their story--whether freely, or under duress, I don't know, but it makes it harder to believe what they say while captive.
If they only had the information from the Russian mainstream media it is understandable. But why they did not go on the Internet and check up on things, I can't understand.
About 85% of russian citizens approved occupation of Crimea in 2014, in fact they approved start of war with Ukraine. It is according to russian social services. A lot of russian zombies do believe in all this nonsense.

Hello Lubomyr. Over and over in these interviews, there seems to be a common underlying theme, and that is this sense that Russians either do not have the correct vocabulary to evoke WTH it is they are thinking OR almost the entire society suffers from very severe apathy, and it's an apathy that they seem to not know how to overcome. Aleksey sounds to have had some horrible breaks in life, and I do not lack empathy for anyone, but I, too, came from a broken home and quite an abusive one, yet I went to college and was a successful entrepreneur, and not was all easy for me. It took work, dedication and dignity, and dignity is something you asked Aleksey about. I do not know what is wrong with this demographic of people. Though Ukrainians were once in the USSR, they seem to be able to "call a spade a spade," as they say in America, and have empathy, dignity and the ability to love others outside of their close circle, as well. I applaud you, once again, Lubomyr. When you said you got triggered by the word politics, I did have a small laugh, simply because you say things sometimes that are humorous or in a humorous way. I hesitate to even mention it, as I do not, for one second, consider anything about this war something to laugh about. I just wanted to make that clear. I wish I knew what the answer is, but the answer is probably a dire one. There's a comment below that said they wondered if it could be a DNA thing, something comparable to battered wives' syndrome or something else. I've wondered the same. Though I can't put my finger on it and I fully acknowledge that cultural differences are profound between the US and Russia, I still believe this problem goes generations deep. I would think it can only be undone by generations of Russia's youth uprising, education beginning in primary school and other government programs that tackle this issue. My heart bleeds for Ukraine. I want it so badly to overcome this tyranny and become a happy and thriving sovereign state. As I've said before, I plan to travel to Ukraine to help with rebuilding, no matter how small or large the task that is asked of me. I will continue to donate to Ukraine, however, until I can be of benefit. Thank you for sharing your interviews and for asking very pertinent questions and being able to ask questions in a way that makes your interviewees think, as well as for sharing the history of Russia and Ukraine going back centuries. Its inbred for Russians to be led and told how to live and they accept it, like some other countries in the world, they have no concept of free thinking.
Let me share a small and true story for you that may shed some light on this. My father was a physicist who organized and lead a number of scientific delegations to the Soviet Union for the US government for over twenty years from the 1960s to the 1980s. On one such trip my brother and my mother accompanied him. At the time my mother was undergoing chemotherapy and simply lacked the energy to travel from city to city so she stayed in an apartment in Moscow furnished by the Russian Government. Most Russians had never met someone from the West, and after my mother had been at the apartment for some weeks the woman who did the housekeeping decided to ask my mother some questions about what it was like to live in the West. At one point in the conversation, the woman asked my mother if my father ever hit her. My mother said that my father never hit her, and if he did then my mother would leave him. The woman looked quizzically at my mother and then said, "Well I guess he must not be much of a man." That little story told me a lot about Russians

That is a disgusting measure of a man if the litmus used is whether you hit your wife, one who is physically weaker than you and probably smaller. I suppose your story also makes me understand that, perhaps, I canNOT understand the thinking there. There are obviously domestic abuses in the US too, but the way the Russian woman replied to your mother is appalling, as well as hurtful. Domestic abuse is extremely frowned upon here, and I'm sure in most countries, so your comment most definitely sheds light on my many, many hours of thought on this, and I've even stepped out of my comfort zone to find the truth. Even after doing so, I still am left with this genuine anger at the motivation of Russia's demographic. I know there are outliers and those who do not ascribe to the same thinking, but it seems quite endemic in the population. As an aside, I notice that most of Lubomyr's interviewees have never traveled and especially to the West, but really never outside of their own country. You mention in your story that the housekeeper asked your mother questions about the West, which seems to be telling that she, too, had never traveled to anywhere in the West. Do you see anything whatsoever that could even begin to change this warped sense of thought and/or their expectations in life? The salaries Russians live on alone tell me that there can't be too much done outside of living and working your life away, and it truly seems to be "enough" for them, as they say in their own words. There seems to be zero optimism or motivation for more. Thus, I suppose is communism at its core. Thank you again for sharing your story with me. It means a lot and gives me food for thought. I appreciate it!
@Technical assistance Ural Sir, you make me feel humble by what you say you did. I doubt that I have the bravery and courage to do what you did. Back in the 1970s, I protested against the US involvement in Vietnam and the bombing of Cambodia. I even travelled to Washington to demonstrate with perhaps as many as a thousand other people in front of the Pentagon. The protest was broken up by police on horseback who escorted us across the bridge to the other side of the Potomac River. I recall walking beside one of the horseback mounted police and having quite a friendly conversation, but it was also clear that if we did not keep moving across the bridge then that conversation and his actions would be less friendly. I must say that it is quite intimidating to stand beside a policeman on horseback, and I can imagine it must have been terrifying to be infantry in front of a cavalry charge. I tell this story not to make me sound better, but in fact to the contrary. I risked very little by demonstrating against US Government policy on that day. Nobody was going to get thrown in jail for 15 years just for protesting. If someone had caused damage or attacked a policeman then they would likely go to jail. However, this was a peaceful protest. Now, I seriously doubt that I would have had the courage to go to that protest if I knew that if arrested I would go to jail for years. Putin's autocracy is beginning to get as restricted as it was under Stalin. You could have been arrested and sent to a Gulag for doing what you did, and during the time of Stalin one of your team members would likely have informed on you. That was a high risk you took, and you have my admiration for it. I hope there are enough other Russians who will act as you did.
You are doing a great service to anyone even mildly curious about how does war feel. I understand your cool attitude towards so many of these guys, but the work of talking face to face with "the enemy" will be a huge part of peace, whenever it comes. I am curious, as a rely on subtitles to understand these interviews, how many people commenting (not in english) are russian, and how many are ukrainian, and how many reject your interviews as propaganda, how many learn something?
Glad to see other English speakers as curious about these interviews as I am. They're fascinating yet frustrating at the same time with all of them deflecting personal responsibility. Mykola's point about being triggered when Russians brush off a topic by using the word politics was right in the money.

I watched many interviews and I guess 80% of them said that they signed the contract because they discovered their conscience and they were promised to work as supplier or so, far away from the combat zone. This young man is mainly complaining in self potty about his own bad conditions and that he was cheated. But imagine if the conditions would have been good.... probably he would kill Ukrainians without remorse and vindicate his killing with "following orders".

Interesting. Lubomir may have been a bit hard on this guy. He's an orphan with debts and no family to fall back on. OK, joining the army was stupid, and probably self-deceptive, but it sounds like he was short of options, including anywhere to live. He realised pretty quickly that this was stupid, so did a runner, and then was apparently quite resourceful living as a homeless person for more than 2 months before finally getting caught. Assuming he's not making it all up then he wasn't really a danger to anyone. But he did seem to have difficulty with the idea that being part of the army is being part of the problem. 'I wasn't actually doing the shooting personally' doesn't absolve him of responsibility. I guess if he was 18 or 19 then all this would be a bit more excuseable. He is old enough to know better at 27.
As much as I understand the interviewers anger and frustration, he's being subjective rather than objective. His line of questioning should be directed to generals or Putin himself. This captive isn't much more than a boy or young man and I would hope he had no real interest in hurting or killing Ukrainians, as I'm sure many more young Russians who perished didn't. Nothing will lessen the pain and hurt endured by Ukraine but the cost to both sides is unmeasurable.....and for what? Putins ego, nothing more. Such a waste, it's more than a crime against humanity.

As a number of other people have said in their comments, this POW shows many of the symptoms of fetal alcohol syndrome. I don't mean to suggest that exonerates him, but he really is not all right in the head. I am so glad he was pressed on this so he was unable to wriggle out of his group responsibility for invading an independent sovereign country and an Orthodox Slav one at that . @Knob Jockey You should watch the collective discussions that this interviewer and another have with a group of POWs. You feel uncomfortable with this interview, just as I do, but watch when they have a room of POWs, and lecture them. Very interesting is how some of the POWs really talk back and engage these journalists. Most the guys are keeping their head down. I doubt if they were given a choice about whether to attend or not.

When have Russians ever taken responsibility for what they do? It is always, "We were forced to do that" or "You left me no choice and I had to do that." Perhaps that is why Russia keeps wanting and getting autocrats like Putin. If Russians had individual freedom to chose what to so then they would have to take responsibility for what they did. However, with an autocrat in rule the individual Russian just say they were forced to do what they did. Now, I know there are Russians who want personal freedom, but never seem to be enough of them to change how their country behaves.

Every time a pow brings up that they "were working in transporting food, etc" it should be stated that by doing so they were enabling other Russians to shoot at Ukrainians. If they went to Ukraine for financial reasons, they should be asked why they didn't rob a bank in Russia instead. If they indicate that this would be illegal, then they should be asked if it was legal or illegal to be part of an invading force of Ukraine.
They're as slippery as jello in these interviews. Mykola tries to point out their BS but they still try to wiggle out of any true personal responsibility.

It's bizarre, how so many of these POWs insist they didn't go to Ukraine to fight, to kill. I find it impossible to believe that so many went believing they would not be involved in combat. It's like they just automatically lie, because they want to placate their captors. From what I've heard, some of them, when they're exchanged, change their story--whether freely, or under duress, I don't know, but it makes it harder to believe what they say while captive.

About 85% of russian citizens approved occupation of Crimea in 2014, in fact they approved start of war with Ukraine. It is according to russian social services. A lot of russian zombies do believe in all this nonsense.

Вывод Напрашивается сам собой, то что обнищание населения было задуманно изначально, это понятно, чтобы довести народ до крайней нищеты, загнать его в долговую огромную яму под названием ипотека, кредиты,собрать ребёнка в школу и т. д., чтобы этот самый народ, был готов на всё, чтобы заработать хоть немного денег...а заработать сегодня режим предоставляет один способ, ЭТО - идти всем убивать, повторюсь, чтобы заработать убить не задумываясь, кто перед тобой, и они идут....Людей сделали бездушными машинами, на протяжении всего срока правления режима, убирая хороших, грамотных, педагогов из школ и сокращая образование, сегодня видно на лицо кто вышел из этих школ. Люди готовые на всё, их отучили думать, это бездушные машины для уничтожения, им прикажут убить мать, не сомневаюсь, придут и убьют ,.а главное, то, что мотивируется , деньгами, ......сколько примеров рассказали пленные, Им дали приказ добить своих, они не задумываясь его выполнили...В них, нет ничего святого.... Цель режима, ненависть ко всем и ко всему, достигнута.......

Hello Lubomyr. Over and over in these interviews, there seems to be a common underlying theme, and that is this sense that Russians either do not have the correct vocabulary to evoke WTH it is they are thinking OR almost the entire society suffers from very severe apathy, and it's an apathy that they seem to not know how to overcome. Aleksey sounds to have had some horrible breaks in life, and I do not lack empathy for anyone, but I, too, came from a broken home and quite an abusive one, yet I went to college and was a successful entrepreneur, and not was all easy for me. It took work, dedication and dignity, and dignity is something you asked Aleksey about. I do not know what is wrong with this demographic of people. Though Ukrainians were once in the USSR, they seem to be able to "call a spade a spade," as they say in America, and have empathy, dignity and the ability to love others outside of their close circle, as well.
I applaud you, once again, Lubomyr. When you said you got triggered by the word politics, I did have a small laugh, simply because you say things sometimes that are humorous or in a humorous way. I hesitate to even mention it, as I do not, for one second, consider anything about this war something to laugh about. I just wanted to make that clear.
I wish I knew what the answer is, but the answer is probably a dire one. There's a comment below that said they wondered if it could be a DNA thing, something comparable to battered wives' syndrome or something else. I've wondered the same. Though I can't put my finger on it and I fully acknowledge that cultural differences are profound between the US and Russia, I still believe this problem goes generations deep. I would think it can only be undone by generations of Russia's youth uprising, education beginning in primary school and other government programs that tackle this issue.
My heart bleeds for Ukraine. I want it so badly to overcome this tyranny and become a happy and thriving sovereign state. As I've said before, I plan to travel to Ukraine to help with rebuilding, no matter how small or large the task that is asked of me. I will continue to donate to Ukraine, however, until I can be of benefit.
Thank you for sharing your interviews and for asking very pertinent questions and being able to ask questions in a way that makes your interviewees think, as well as for sharing the history of Russia and Ukraine going back centuries. I appreciate your interviews and your articles on Telegram. I am praying for Ukraine. America loves you.
Its inbred for Russians to be led and told how to live and they accept it, like some other countries in the world, they have no concept of free thinking.
Let me share a small and true story for you that may shed some light on this.
My father was a physicist who organized and lead a number of scientific delegations to the Soviet Union for the US government for over twenty years from the 1960s to the 1980s. On one such trip my brother and my mother accompanied him. At the time my mother was undergoing chemotherapy and simply lacked the energy to travel from city to city so she stayed in an apartment in Moscow furnished by the Russian Government. Most Russians had never met someone from the West, and after my mother had been at the apartment for some weeks the woman who did the housekeeping decided to ask my mother some questions about what it was like to live in the West. At one point in the conversation, the woman asked my mother if my father ever hit her. My mother said that my father never hit her, and if he did then my mother would leave him. The woman looked quizzically at my mother and then said, "Well I guess he must not be much of a man."
That little story told me a lot about Russians

That is a disgusting measure of a man if the litmus used is whether you hit your wife, one who is physically weaker than you and probably smaller. I suppose your story also makes me understand that, perhaps, I canNOT understand the thinking there. There are obviously domestic abuses in the US too, but the way the Russian woman replied to your mother is appalling, as well as hurtful. Domestic abuse is extremely frowned upon here, and I'm sure in most countries, so your comment most definitely sheds light on my many, many hours of thought on this, and I've even stepped out of my comfort zone to find the truth. Even after doing so, I still am left with this genuine anger at the motivation of Russia's demographic. I know there are outliers and those who do not ascribe to the same thinking, but it seems quite endemic in the population. As an aside, I notice that most of Lubomyr's interviewees have never traveled and especially to the West, but really never outside of their own country. You mention in your story that the housekeeper asked your mother questions about the West, which seems to be telling that she, too, had never traveled to anywhere in the West.
Do you see anything whatsoever that could even begin to change this warped sense of thought and/or their expectations in life? The salaries Russians live on alone tell me that there can't be too much done outside of living and working your life away, and it truly seems to be "enough" for them, as they say in their own words. There seems to be zero optimism or motivation for more. Thus, I suppose is communism at its core.

@Technical assistance Ural Sir, you make me feel humble by what you say you did. I doubt that I have the bravery and courage to do what you did. Back in the 1970s, I protested against the US involvement in Vietnam and the bombing of Cambodia. I even travelled to Washington to demonstrate with perhaps as many as a thousand other people in front of the Pentagon. The protest was broken up by police on horseback who escorted us across the bridge to the other side of the Potomac River. I recall walking beside one of the horseback mounted police and having quite a friendly conversation, but it was also clear that if we did not keep moving across the bridge then that conversation and his actions would be less friendly. I must say that it is quite intimidating to stand beside a policeman on horseback, and I can imagine it must have been terrifying to be infantry in front of a cavalry charge. I tell this story not to make me sound better, but in fact to the contrary. I risked very little by demonstrating against US Government policy on that day. Nobody was going to get thrown in jail for 15 years just for protesting. If someone had caused damage or attacked a policeman then they would likely go to jail. However, this was a peaceful protest. Now, I seriously doubt that I would have had the courage to go to that protest if I knew that if arrested I would go to jail for years. Putin's autocracy is beginning to get as restricted as it was under Stalin. You could have been arrested and sent to a Gulag for doing what you did, and during the time of Stalin one of your team members would likely have informed on you. That was a high risk you took, and you have my admiration for it. I hope there are enough other Russians who will act as you did.

You are doing a great service to anyone even mildly curious about how does war feel. I understand your cool attitude towards so many of these guys, but the work of talking face to face with "the enemy" will be a huge part of peace, whenever it comes. I am curious, as a rely on subtitles to understand these interviews, how many people commenting (not in english) are russian, and how many are ukrainian, and how many reject your interviews as propaganda, how many learn something?

Quite the victim! I wonder if they suffer from PTSD or DNA damage from brutal oppression over generations? One POW (Zolkin) actually began trembling because he said something that could be construed negatively and feared the consequence.

One common factor running through all of these interviews is a lengthy pause between question & answer when the answer could/would be interpreted as condemnation of Russian rulers, these guys are more afraid of what their own country will do to them than they are the Ukrainians. With hindsight, its blatantly obvious that the powers that be in Russia put zero value on the lives of their own & looking at the continual & deliberate targeting of innocent Ukrainian civilians they feel even less for a perceived enemy. Is there any wonder why / how invading troops ( russian / wagnerite / Chechen ) have been executing the innocent aged, men women & children in their own homes & depositing their bodies in mass graves at the orders of the superiors when human life has no value, this too has to be inbred into the DNA of those who have grown up & digested the constant stream of propaganda referring to the evil nazification of anyone who dares to think differently.

He reminds me on many Germans during 3.Reich: They! witnessed with their own eyes how Jews were transported on trucks and vanished. They ate up the narration that they just moved to a neat village where Jews live together in good condition because they benefited from it

Though everybody knew that something very atrocious is going on they preferred to maintain the official Nazi-tale.
The Russian construction soldiers who consider killing as a well paid job love to hide their conscience behind the current Putin propaganda. Officially they pretend to be not interested in the little fortune money - they all listening to their conscience and wanted to rescue the Ukraine from Nazism and bring it back to the Russian world.
I watched many interviews and I guess 80% of them said that they signed the contract because they discovered their conscience and they were promised to work as supplier or so, far away from the combat zone.
This young man is mainly complaining in self potty about his own bad conditions and that he was cheated.
But imagine if the conditions would have been good.... probably he would kill Ukrainians without remorse and vindicate his killing with "following orders".

Interesting. Lubomir may have been a bit hard on this guy. He's an orphan with debts and no family to fall back on. OK, joining the army was stupid, and probably self-deceptive, but it sounds like he was short of options, including anywhere to live. He realised pretty quickly that this was stupid, so did a runner, and then was apparently quite resourceful living as a homeless person for more than 2 months before finally getting caught. Assuming he's not making it all up then he wasn't really a danger to anyone. But he did seem to have difficulty with the idea that being part of the army is being part of the problem. 'I wasn't actually doing the shooting personally' doesn't absolve him of responsibility. I guess if he was 18 or 19 then all this would be a bit more excuseable. He is old enough to know better at 27.
As much as I understand the interviewers anger and frustration, he's being subjective rather than objective. His line of questioning should be directed to generals or Putin himself. This captive isn't much more than a boy or young man and I would hope he had no real interest in hurting or killing Ukrainians, as I'm sure many more young Russians who perished didn't. Nothing will lessen the pain and hurt endured by Ukraine but the cost to both sides is unmeasurable.....and for what? Putins ego, nothing more. Such a waste, it's more than a crime against humanity.

As a number of other people have said in their comments, this POW shows many of the symptoms of fetal alcohol syndrome. I don't mean to suggest that exonerates him, but he really is not all right in the head. So just from a human perspective, I think he needs to be treated a bit differently from most all of the other POW interviews I have watched, and I have watched quite a number.
For 8 years, threats against Russians have been heard from Ukraine. Ukraine was arming and killing people in the Donbas.

I am not sure about this one . Is he just naive or gullible or deliberately evasive and noncommittal about his intentions and involvement. I am so glad he was pressed on this so he was unable to wriggle out of his group responsibility for invading an independent sovereign country and an Orthodox Slav one at that .
On his return to his homeland I am almost certain he will re-enlist and will return to Ukraine in what ever capacity he is told .

@Knob Jockey You should watch the collective discussions that this interviewer and another have with a group of POWs. You feel uncomfortable with this interview, just as I do, but watch when they have a room of POWs, and lecture them. Very interesting is how some of the POWs really talk back and engage these journalists. Most the guys are keeping their head down. I doubt if they were given a choice about whether to attend or not.

This was a hard interview to watch, with the frustration from journalist who literaly had to break the pows situation down to minute level of supporting your infantry your supporting killers/ rapist..i think its going to take generations to overcome russias propaganda mindset of imperialism and a lack of critical free thinking will most likely continue throw these rural russians into the yoke of following a dictators diabolical decisions..i hope you were able to make this russian man think what choices he did and hope if he gets returned as pow he will leave russia to make a better life for himself. Deepest respect for someone holding back from a violent crime like physically assaulting someone who is a prisoner? Have you lost your mind? That would put the journalist on the same ethical level as this prisoner, perhaps even lower because the prisoner can not fight back.
