I live in Atlanta and I have one of these that I’ve owned for about 6 yrs now and it’s gotten to a pretty large size. I use palm in the ground spike fertilizers and it’s doing amazing. I however would not grow these in extremely cold regions. These will not survive in the Midwest and Northeast. Our winters in Atlanta are quite mild only lasting about 8 weeks with highs in the mid 50’s.

Here in Central Florida that do fine in full sun or the shade I have noticed that say goes and partial shade seem to have larger darker green foliage also I've noticed the last son they receive the slower they grow and the longer they retain existing foliage which decreases new sets of foliage my opinion is they do best with slightly filtered Sun or full Morning Sun and filtered afternoon sun

I got one growing in Minnesota right now, very warm and humid during the summers and it's easy to grow one then. Just got it yesterday, this video helps a lot of just giving general information. it's 75-80 degrees outside every day and does not drop below 60, I hope it grows somewhat big in the pot and hope it does not get to big. I know it would not survive the winters in MN at all because we get weather below -20 F almost every day. But it just show's this palm will grow just about anywhere.

Question. I recently removed two of these because they were too close to the pool. They were probably about 4ft tall. I pulled the trunk out and all I see are roots that were once attached. Do I need to put any root killer? Or once the trunk is removed that’s it?

    • @EatYourBackyard

You said they can be grown as far north as NY. Do you have any suggestions on how to protect it over winter? I have one that I've had for many years but it is getting too big and heavy to continue bringing indoors for winter. I'm thinking about planting it in my yard this summer. What are my chances of getting it through winter? I'd hate to lose it. Its trunk is about two feet high and about 1 foot wide.

ronjamesorchestra This palm can take temps down to 5°F. Also known as king sago, it’s a living fossil, having existed when dinosaurs roamed. It’s native to Japan and commonplace in warm region landscapes. The secret to success with it is providing sharp drainage. Use sago palm with palms, in rock gardens or as a patio plant. The leathery leaves indicate drought tolerance. All parts of this plant are poisonous. Hardy in Zones 7b-11.
