Silent treatment is a form of emotional abuse. It's designed to punish. If you "need time to process and articulate" then you tell someone that, and give them a timeframe you're ready to talk.

It makes you feel guilt and shame even if you have done nothing wrong. When the other one stays quite it leaves you feeling abandoned and not worthy. Not nice feelings and you want to get rid of them as soon as possible which can end up with you saying and feeling sorry and wanting to please the other and making them feeling better and in a greater mood.
Unfortunately this is not an unusual behaviour. I get in touched with in my every day work as an psychologist.

The silent treatment isn't a woman thing, I've known plenty of men who do it too!
It's fine to need a bit of space to calm down and collect your thoughts, but not okay when someone gives you the silent treatment for days to manipulate you into doing what they want. Often, it's a bit of both. Then sometimes someone is embarrassed and/or scared that you're still mad, so they avoid you for that reason.
