    You did not mention military experience. The local FSDO gave me permission to test for the Airframe and Powerplant based solely on my military aircraft maintenance experience. I never attended a Part 147 school; I purchased study guides and after several weeks of self-study passed all the written exams. The FSDO provided me with a list of DMEs in my area, I sought one out and did the Oral and Practical. My specific job (Rating) in the Navy was Aviation Structural Mechanic (AMS); I spent time outside my Rating cross-training in Powerplants to gain that experience. Saved me a lot of $$$ in tuition and time. I retired from the Navy after 20 years with an A&P/IA and went right into corporate aviation maintaining KingAirs and 500 series Citations, retiring again after 22 years as a DoM.

      I didn't mention military specifically, but yes, military experience counts for the practical experience route. I'll say that I know it is easier at certain FSDO's to get signed off depending upon what you did in the service. Our FSDO won't always sign someone off for the full rating if they never did any recip engines. However, other FSDO'S will so shop around

    Bryce, in regard to your porch swing caveat, I just finished LSR-M and the way we were taught was that if you wanted to pursue A&P, then start an AMT log the moment we completed LSR-M. Once the equivalent of three years of work was logged, then contact the FSDO for sign off to start the process. Building one plane, you could certainly log the hours, but not necessary since an LSR-M can work for hire you can log those hours on any applicable work under the certificate. This is not a popular route as it's not structured nor speedy by any means.

      @brycebuildsit  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This is true, I just mentioned it briefly as one of the guys at the airport. I frequent went this route after building an RV-6. I think it's worth it if you are already building an experimental but I wouldn't pursue an A&P this way. Not when a 147 school is only 12-19 months and is considerably cheaper

      I am a thirty plus year professional auto mechanic and don't really want to spend a year and a half going to school again. This built an airplane route sounds perfect though. How do I find out more about this option?

  • @stuarthutt3740
    @stuarthutt3740 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Very good analysis. Yes airlines will be very short of pilots and maintenance staff for various reasons. This was true 13 years ago but is accelerating. Another route are the Canadian colleges. Tuition for Centennial College 2 year program is $45,000 as a foreigner. Canadian students $10,500. Marry a Canadian. Back in the early 1960's you only needed a commercial to fly for Air Canada. They trained you the rest of the way. I believe airlines will have to ramp up their own training programs. As an ex AME, Pilot and engineer I would go fly and maintain aircraft in Indonesia if I were young.

    Good luck to anyone who dream to be an A&P. Since 2023 the testing it is done by PSI a company base in California who write all the test and many question have nothing to do with our work as A&Ps. Each test cost $150 and they make sure you fail in one test so they can make more money. When I was in school in Tennessee we were 500 students and all of us failed at least one test (general, airframe, power plan). Many students failed 2 and all 3 written tests. Less say if 500 students need to take one test twice them PSI make $80.000.
    Now you understand why writing the test in a way you can fail.

    • @brycebuildsit
      @brycebuildsit  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you already have your P it could take as little as 1 semester through a 147 school. Because by having a P you also already have the general portion done. So you would just have to take airframe courses. It does depend on the 147 it could take up to 6 months if it not an accelerated program.

    I've heard that doing maintenance / repairs on your own aircraft counts toward the "experience" needed to take the test(s), provided an A&P/IA will sign you off for testing. I've been performing most all of the maintenance / repairs on the aircraft I own/fly under the supervision of my IA for the better part of 15yrs. There is a 147 school less than 2 miles from where I live, but I have no desire to start a new career after retiring from the Power Sports Industry, but it would be nice to be able to sign off and get back in the air rather than waiting for log entries..... is there any truth to this?

    • @brycebuildsit
      @brycebuildsit  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You can count all that. The tuff thing is an airworthiness inspector has to sign off on your 8610-2. Unfortunately, it kinda depends on the airworthiness inspector you are talking to. There are some real by the book guys, and there are guys who are more fluid.

      As long as you meet the requirements of 65 and go to a Part 147 school or have 30 months practical experience. You can test for your A&P. You just can't exercise the privileges of the A&P unless working on U.S. registered Aircraft outside the U.S. wich you would be doing.

    I have ran into an issue with getting signed off for my Power Plant. I have met the concurrent 30 month requirement along with the hours needed to receive the PP sign off, but was told that since I have already started testing, my general written, I must now have to wait 18 months after my certification completion of my Airframe certification date to receive the sign off for my PP. Can anyone clarify this for me?

    • @brycebuildsit
      @brycebuildsit  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That is false. All the regulation says is that after 30 months you are eligible to receive both. Now a FSDO inspector is who signs that off and they can choose to deny the power plant. But the only time I've heard them do that is if someone has 0 experience in that 30 months for PowerPlant. I.e. all they did was heavy structures, or wheels and brakes
