While ranching is an incredibly noble trade, without the blacksmith making tools and sundry other items, it is incredibly difficult to run a ranch.

but beware, I've worked 15 years on one of these (and even bigger ones):
Normally under the anvil of the hammer there should be a counterweight 20 times the weight of the hammer bear.
You have to make sure that the hammer bear hits perfectly vertical.
Very important: In our case the engine was also with a belt-bully next to the machine, because if the engine is shifted by the vibrations, the whole transmission of the hammer is immediately broken!
Further you have to be quite sure that the hammer has no cracks, otherwise everything flies around your ears
That fiber gear *should* protect the gearbox.

Good point about looking for cracks in things that could put shrapnel in the air, for sure. The old cracked motor was a serious sign that something *else* in the machine isn't aligned correctly and topping out is another.
I really don't want these guys finding out in the worst possible way what else is not up to snuff in the machine.
I mean, it's great to see younger guys full of enthusiasm doing this but they really need a graybeard or two that knows what to look at before turning that big mother on.
Fortunately there seem to be a few in the comments willing to make suggestions...

Alec, I really hope that you see this.
You need to depth that gear as well as align it otherwise it will destroy itself.
Get some gear marking compound and check the contact pattern, that will tell you if your alignment and depth is good or not.

I’m 15 years old and I’ve always wanted to blacksmith and I never thought I could but your videos made me believe that I can. @@EmilFrydendal Right, my point being, if he accidentally taps your finger and you drop or bobble it, it will only burn you in addition to having your digit(s) smashed. Pretty sure some gloves or a clamp would've been prudent. Not that I haven't done similar or worse.
I love these old machines like this, the only thing that bugs me is the state of the paint on it. I really hope they plan on repainting this gorgeous hammer.

Smart from Temco. I bought my dad one of their toe Jack's for xmas after seeing it on your channel. You don't know you need it until you see it.
When the gear went on and the mounting holes lined up I double checked to make sure I was on the right channel. I'm so used to complication that something going smoothly confused me.
Love the idea of making your own tools to do a job that previous tools don't or can't do. Feeling the excitement, gentlemen. Love your work, keep it up!

Hey mate, loose E-stops on the floor, my workshop has them for all our equipment and saved a guys arm on a drill press, his arm got caught and couldnt hit the estop on the machine with his hand, but was able to step on the foot estop that was loose on the ground. Just a thought, thanks for the content, I really enjoy getting home from work knowing you have uploaded, kinda makes my day. Thankyou.

Yes, the glorification of plants at the time their flowers open, and the moment they produce new shoots, and when they offer their smiling words is as beautiful and clear as themselves. For through the beautiful mouth of each flower and the tongues of its orderly shoots and the words of its well-measured seeds, the order demonstrates wisdom and is observedly within a balance which demonstrates knowledge. Personally I would recommend tearing the motor down, cleaning it out and putting new bearings in it. Three phase motors will run forever if the are taken care of.
I hope the bearings in that motor are good, i cringed a little when you spun it and it stopped quickly by itself. Usually motors will spin a while by themselves
