I started my blog in a very competitive niche 3.5 months ago. When I started I was so green I didn’t even know what Wordpress was and had never written anything in my life. I listen to your videos and Neil Patel’s videos and I have found your advice very practical and useful for newbies like me. As of today, I have posted about 22 articles (I work full time) and I am getting over 3000 page views per month and have spent no monies advertising. My secret: CONTENT IS KING!

And you're right, he is refering to a business blog, not to new niche sites.

Bought a new domain and created some posts (actually only 8) with valuable content. And after the first two months, I just left the blog for almost three months without absolutely no promotion of any kind. During the first five months, the traffic was just absent.
However, after six months, the traffic begin to pick up, my posts begin to show up in the first page of Google. At present, I am driving nearly 3k page views per month. And, it's growing steadily up.

Ecommerce sites need great content and imagery on product pages, plus cross-sell & up-sell links, social reviews, 'expert answers' to FAQ's, tech specs, options, quantity price breaks, products bought together, back in stock alerts, shipping and delivery info on the page and live chat as a starting point. In addition you can write useful blog articles for visitors that explain how your products help them too. Remember to link to products from your blog post and also on your product pages back to your blog posts.

I personally think that Neil's advice is confusing and not that practical (compared to yours). But in his defense, he's talking to a lot of people that own businesses and not necessarily people starting blogs.
There are only so many buying intent or commercial related keywords that make sense for a business to create.
When you're not making a blog (but focused on selling a specific products or services) then SEO becomes a way different game.
So I think it depends on where you start out and where you're going. It doesn't make sense for a local plumber to try to make 1000 blog posts on plumbing, but rather they need to be focused on ranking for keywords in their area.

Brand new sites need more content and quality content might be the only way to compete in certain competitive markets.
However, there are countless sites with very little content that rank very high for 1,000s of keywords. These sites all have one thing in common: high authority, diversified anchor backlinks.

  • @BrendanHufford
    @BrendanHufford 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

"What is someone with a brand new site going to do for 8 hours to promote their content?" Lots of things. I'd start by building relationships with other site owners and creating content for them and linking back to your own strategically created content. His game is SEO, so the entire argument about email audience, social, YoUTube, etc. is a bit moot. In SEO, you can (as a complete beginner) start promoting your content and using the barnacle effect to rank content on other people's websites. Don't agree with Neil, but there's lots of great things out there for folks to do!

There are so many videos on youtube from so-called "gurus" who are providing really good advice but my most favorite channel is your channel - Income School, Neil Patels', and Miles Beckler.
I understand your position, but to be fair with the man, he did not say that you can just create mediocre content and market it. What he said is: "write one piece of content, make sure it's good, but spend the majority of your time promoting it". Before he concluded his video he reiterated this by saying: "in essence, content is still great but you should spend more time promoting".
Everyone has their own style, Income Schools videos are thorough and detailed(although sometimes unnecessarily long), Neil Patels' videos are short and direct to the point, and Miles Beckler doesn't hold back and give out everything he knows. But the style doesn't matter. For someone who is just starting, any help I can get from anyone is priceless.
I don't think Neil is trying to discredit anyone. When I first saw his video, the first thing that crossed my mind is, "oh.. thank god, I think I have another option then". I never took it as, "oh crap, everything I learned elsewhere is a waste". For someone who is not so good at writing and can't pump up a bunch of articles a week, and don't have the capacity to hire someone else to help in the writing, I saw it as a chance, a ray of hope.
You have my highest respect and I really like you guys, but to see you take it against each other is just heart-breaking.

First we need to create best enough content on our site to give detailed knowledge about that nich in which we are working. And then we should think about spending time to promote content.
We can compromise manual promotion of site on social media with creating best piece of content on site, because it automatically shared/promoted by our users when we get good enough Organic traffic.
But can't compromise content with promotion.
    That's why... "Content Is a King" :)

But, it worked in getting us to click and you guys to do a video response with his name in the title. For Neil, mission accomplished. While I wouldn’t be that aggressive downplaying SEO, I have to a bit bc SEO ONLY agencies I see so often dilute consumer insights and it hurts businesses. You can’t write copy for ads if you don’t understand insights.

Quality content is king - but I buy digital ads for a living and you can't imagine how many crappy click bait type sites bring in loads of revenue via traffic arbitrage, the complete opposite of the spectrum of what you guys teach. If more sites took your approach, the Facebook's/Instagrams of the world wouldn't dominate advertising in the way they do - but if you look at it Facebook has always put user experience first, that's why their site isn't cluttered with ads & slide shows to maximize page view/ads, etc! Kudos to you for taking the high road - I've added some of your sites, as relevant, to our whitelist - ha!!!

Honestly, he's saying exactly what Brian Clark and Sonia Simone of copyblogger, what Brian of Backlinko and what Matthew Schaefer, author or Content Shock book, says ...
That content publishing frequency is a race to the bottom if you're not publishing authority posts on topics that google and bing will treat like a wikipedia page.

I understand that this discussion is about whether you CAN *only* produce content and then just wait by and see what happens. But even Income School is trying to figure out the ways of the business. It's not like you should choose between only content or only marketing, you need a good mix of both. Even if it is possible to create nothing but content based on the "build it and they will come"-mentality, you will lose against a business that does produce content AND market it well.

Literally, Neil Patel's worst advice he's ever given. Glad you made this video to correct him. I wish you didn't tippy toe around the subject though like you worked for Neil Patel and you didn't want to offend him. He needs to know that he can't just make videos saying whatever the hell he wants to. Content IS king and promotion is a dang waste of time for all of us smaller marching ants. Income School is the king when it comes to growing a website from nothing to something not freaking Neil Patel. Get pissed and let the world know, Income School says content is king, therefore, content is king! I followed your advice for over a year and two of the three websites I created are showing hockey stick growth with earnings increasing every month. Hallelujah for Income School! I can't imagine where I'd be if I took Patel's advice... Geesh, waste of dang time his videos are. None of them are in-depth, they're all about promoting his website and incredibly overpriced services.

that its super niche niche site. Look at guys like Brian dean at backlinko who ranks for crazy competitive terms like seo tips, email list building etc. and he POS 1-3. And he says need killer content AND great white hat link building i.e. create killer visual post, infographic etc let key influencers know they will spread it out so get direct traffic and some great links. Need both. Same as work smart not hard. Not mutually exclusive need both. They are both right.

We all know he put out great content for years. Now days I disagree with some points he hits on and like you, know if he didn't have an "Elvis" following he wouldn't have such a huge following over every word. He still puts out great content for the most part and we all know how hard it is today to do that. Again, I do think you handled it very well and as I said you have a "Headline Winner".

I'm not a project24 member and have no association with Income school guys. I did start a site less than a year back and wrote 30 articles between 1600 words and 4000 words. I specifically looked at 1-page ranking articles and made sure I do better than those. Really good quality.
    Strategy
    1. look at all the google's 1st-page results (10 articles) and write a piece of content that was better than all of them combined.
    2. Publish and do Yoast-SEO (get as many greens as possible)
    3. Internal linking well and at least 1 outbound link per article.
    That's it...
I get 15k + visitors a month. Mediavine needs 25k uniques, so I'm writing another 30 more posts with the target of reaching 100 eventually...
Content is king... 10% of my articles are hitting 1, 2 spot and I'm ranking for 1000s of keywords easily...
Of course, I start with keyword research (mostly google suggestions) and don't even care to use Google Keyword planner. My keyword research is less than 10 mins for a blog.
I also have a 100+ links naturally, including reddit and such.
Sure, link building is going to speed up the process, but I would rather spend that time wisely writing a few more articles.
I don't know how to monitize but will think about it at 25k visitors....
    Hope this helps guys..

Question... You mentioned that when starting a website, you have to put out lots of quality content showing Google you are very active, to get attention in ranking. In earlier videos you mentioned building a site to 30 articles and then letting it sit with no activity for a year. I am new and not adding content at a fast rate. Could you clarify on the best rate of adding content and at what point you can let up on that speed, please?

I don't think Neal once said that you shouldn't put out " Quality " Content and ya'll know that. He only meant less in general and then work on promoting it. In fact, you can write a much better, longer post once a week then shorter less quality content 3 times a week. How come no one mentions that in the comments? With that being said, you're right about Neal having a huge audience and following and what works for him definitely won't always be the best advice for smaller fish in this big pond.

I totally understand where you guys are coming from. You need to understand that in marketing there is more than one way to do something and not everything works for every client.
It’s all about testing and trying, if something doesn’t work out then you have to move on to your next strategy.
I appreciate all your tips as much as I appreciate what Neil gives out in his content.
It’s up to me to decide what I want to take away from it.
Personally, I believe that a greatly good article on a topic that has a good volume of traffic would get traffic without much of SEO work. So yes, great content is king.

Hey guys, great video! The biggest problem of all with the Internet right now is that you will mostly find crappy content and it's largely to do with the advice being dispensed by so-called experts. Nobody is an expert, it's just that the larger you become, people are more likely to listen to you. These people are out of touch with reality and it's damaging because everybody takes the advice and acts on it! Some responsibility and consideration has to be taken.

Neils 2018ish position was that content is king . How you can be thorough, use keyword in a flow and not just shove it. And everything in between, he even explained how Google would use content to rank you. That means content is indeed the king. Income school puts very helpful videos. Keep up the good work

yh exactly, his backling advice is also misleading. You shouldn't really be creating backlinks, because it's a by-product of having a lot of great content. The biggest sites on the web don't build backlinks, they just put out tons of content and the by-product of that is millions of backlinks over the years.
