What amazes me about his videos, and these LaGuardia ones in particular, is that he’s talking to the camera as if he’s speaking to a live audience, or broadcasting to thousands of people - describing the empty airport, showing us the advertisements. Today if you record we have the option to Livestream, or record and then very shortly after upload so you know people will see it very soon. But Nelson when making this video has no idea when or if anyone else is going to see it, for all he knows it could be months or years down the road. And yet he talks to us so naturally as if it is being live-streamed. It’s truly incredible.
This was also what amazed me too. Not just that he's vlogging, but that he's somehow nailing all the quips and presentation stylings of modern vloggers without any of the same platforms (or really any proper platform). It's not just a home video with narration and editing, it's unmistakable a vlog, in an era when there weren't even blogs.
i noticed this as well...for he knows it may only be himself who watches the video later in his life..he was definately ahead of his time. he's a character that would surely flourish in social media today.
Yes exactly, some people have such a strong will power and belief that what they are doing is relevent or interesting even if its not very interesting. In late 2023 this uninteresting video becomes an incredibly unusual and special piece of footage, coverage of "early 1989" is pretty rare as it goes, as with anything before the arrival of streaming etc as mentioned in your comment. Not only is this video interesting as recent history, but the person talking to the camera addresses us in the same way and using the same narrative vlogging methods as our contemporary peers. A very noteworthy channel. Loving it!
it makes more sense when you consider he was planning on maybe using some of this footage for his public access show, so in his mind he really was being broadcasted to thousands of people

Just the pure volume of things we have to go through with bags and security, you would be highly upset. We have a full society that wouldn’t suit your personality. You made the selfie cam great too and we appreciate all you filmed for us in the future*
I'm an outcast, So I deeply understand what you were trying to send to nelson... There's alot of stuff I can't do that I want to do, I don't even go outside. I don't have any "Friends" either. Things are just too bad. No one has any clue how bad things have really gotten, People need to turn the world around. Nelson was doing the type of stuff I'd only picture in my dreams.
Seems pretty much the same, put the carry on stuff to the scanner belt and walk through the metal detector and you are good to go. At least here in northern Europe that's my experience.
In America you have to take off your shoes and wait in LONG lines the size of those at an amusement park, and if you're really unlucky you'll get selected for "special security" and don't even get me started on that. If you get pre-approved for (Pre-TSA) like me, you'll have somewhat of an easier time. Notice at around 3:05 he said "it's a quarter til 8 and my plane leaves at 8:30" well nowadays you have to get to the airport at least two hours in advance.
He had a genetic defect with his heart which also killed his Grandfather at 41. This was filmed in Feb 1989, he passed on his favourite Holiday, July 4, 1989. He says some prophetic things in his final Tape dated July 3. He doesn't look too well in it and is clearly at times struggling for breath but what a wonderful final day to have. His dream became reality but unfortunately posthumously, Had he not of died, he would have already had a Cable show showing these tapes by early 1990. He quit his job to pursue his dream two days before he died. The guy is a Godsend and I love him 💕
By the Playboy cover in the news stand @4:21, this is in March 1989. When the airliner crowd finds these videos they're going to gush with excitement that someone was doing trip reports in 1989 the likes of which would not be seen until 2008 or so. This guy was way out of his time. That he figured out so much as one man a culture that would not form for another 20 years is just amazing. Edit: Ha! Feb '89 by the ticket and inflight mag.
You just didn't see video blogging like this in the 80s. It's not like you could post it anywhere. A few years before 1989 and likely there would be no security at all. Anyone could go all the way to the gate for any reason that tickled their little heart.
Once everyone was doing it he probably would have stopped.. the more interesting thing would have been seeing what he was doing today instead of vlogging

Sorry Nelson to inform you in the future of the three airlines you mentioned (Delta,Eastern and Piedmont) the only one thats still around is Delta lol. Eastern came back in recent years in a reboot but it just really has the rights to use the logo and name of the old airline. Its been too long since the original Eastern ceased none of the planes, equipment or employees are the same. It mostly only does charters right now, such as the infamous incident of Mike Pence's Eastern charter going off the runway at LaGuardia. As for Piedmont I think they were absorbed into U.S. Airways, who would be bought by American and absorbed into them in 2015. Nelson the future is full of large corporate conglomerates and mergers, even more than when you were around. Certainly more dollar value in them.
One thing I noticed was the amount of suits on the flight. Corporate ‘80s trench coats doing the hard intercity slog. You’d have seen that waaaay more then. One thing I don’t envy but I respect. Different times.
I wish I knew what date this was I remember when I was 9 years old in 1989 coming back to nyc from Florida vacation with the family at that same time at LaGuardia airport .
Crazy how bored people would sometimes get especially if their flight was delayed for 2 hours. Nowadays people would be spending their time on the phone, tablet or listening to music. I myself would’ve tried to take a nap 😅
Is all the airport construction done yet at la gardea I wonder? Supposed to be heard may 2022 and demolished the last old remaining terminal wings as well heard done unless things have changed.
I love Atlanta. Crime has gotten really bad but where ain’t it? We always drove. When we go to Florida we would have to stop there and just going to Atlanta to shop. I live in Tennessee so it’s not to bad a drive.. Is this where Nelson is from or has family?
Everlasting Θ. well to be honest with you it was the fact that Nelson was recording himself unaware of the black man following close behind him, he even looks at the camera probably freaking out because blogging like this was unheard of in the 80s, and the other funny thing is is the white man was distracted by the woman next to him, she wanted to get out of her seat, but the guy was acting silly and at the moment he moves out of his seat, bam he collides with the black man following Nelson, and Nelson just keeps on walking and looking at the camera unaware of the chaos he left behind, hahaha, thx for asking, have a good day😂
Ok holy shit lmao you know times are different because when he went into the men’s room to film 😂 you CAN NOT do that today or els someone will absolutely take it the wrong way and you’ll probs get your ass beat, but I was born in 93 so I never even got to see any of the 80s but you literally get to see with the 80s were like through his fisheye camera lens LOL it’s just kind of haunting in a way to see how people lived in a time not to far back before I was born XD so rad
I was born in 1982, so the most clear vivid memories I have of the 80s were from 1989, around the time this video was made I remember flying for the first time in March of 1989 for a family trip to Florida, it was a great time.

That's because the aviation industry is allowed to have properly maintained 30+ year old aircraft still in service. Planes are expensive to buy, yo.

Crazy how bored people would sometimes get especially if their flight was delayed for 2 hours. Nowadays people would be spending their time on the phone, tablet or listening to music. I myself would’ve tried to take a nap 😅
Even after 20 years later this guy is a huge insperation to Vlogging.
Almost 30 years actually as of 2018.
This was before tsa didnt let you get off plane or even go back outdoors without being re inspected. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Would you happen to know when the TSA was first used?
planetX15 November 19, 2001
Yeah, a month after the attacks, I'm not surprised, thanks.
planetX15 You’re welcome 😀
Is all the airport construction done yet at la gardea I wonder? Supposed to be heard may 2022 and demolished the last old remaining terminal wings as well heard done unless things have changed.
12.39 dude in the back knows he's being filmed and does the first filmed video crash lol
He wouldn't have been bored with a smartphone. How times have changed
Poor Nelson was so mad at having to check the bag !
I can see Eric McCormick from Will and Grace play Nelson in a movie
2:08 That is the first time I’ve heard Nelson Curse after watching hundreds of videos 💀💀
I love Atlanta. Crime has gotten really bad but where ain’t it? We always drove. When we go to Florida we would have to stop there and just going to Atlanta to shop. I live in Tennessee so it’s not to bad a drive.. Is this where Nelson is from or has family?
The ORIGINAL vlogger
His name on the pass is John Sullivan
Maritza Aponte must be his middle name
Edit: His full name is John Nelson Sullivan, but I think he goes by Nelson
9:36 white man bumps into black man, "um excuse me"😂😂😂
peter lopez ...What’s funny about that?
Everlasting Θ. well to be honest with you it was the fact that Nelson was recording himself unaware of the black man following close behind him, he even looks at the camera probably freaking out because blogging like this was unheard of in the 80s, and the other funny thing is is the white man was distracted by the woman next to him, she wanted to get out of her seat, but the guy was acting silly and at the moment he moves out of his seat, bam he collides with the black man following Nelson, and Nelson just keeps on walking and looking at the camera unaware of the chaos he left behind, hahaha, thx for asking, have a good day😂
peter lopez Vlogging. I agree it was a little funny.
Nelson’s working that gum lol
Airport bathrooms haven’t changed any since the 1980s
The man who invented vlogging
2:13 why doesn't he just check his phone for the time????
His real name is John? It said on his boarding pass.
maybe nelson was his middle name
Yes, and his real name is Nelson too. Nelson is his middle name.
7:37-9:21 priceless
12:55 He walks in circles out of desperation lmao
That was poetic!
That old school taxi cab. I wish I was around back then
Ok holy shit lmao you know times are different because when he went into the men’s room to film 😂 you CAN NOT do that today or els someone will absolutely take it the wrong way and you’ll probs get your ass beat, but I was born in 93 so I never even got to see any of the 80s but you literally get to see with the 80s were like through his fisheye camera lens LOL it’s just kind of haunting in a way to see how people lived in a time not to far back before I was born XD so rad
I was born in 1982, so the most clear vivid memories I have of the 80s were from 1989, around the time this video was made I remember flying for the first time in March of 1989 for a family trip to Florida, it was a great time.
@@donnix1192 see I was a 90s boy so sadly I didn’t get to see the 80s but my two bros got to see a little bit of the 80s cuz there always a lot older then me , but did you ever know about this type of vloging back then ? Or if you saw a guy doing what nealsons doing would you have thought it was wired
I wonder what Nelson would think of flying now
That little boy beating the fire extinguisher is like almost 40 lol
before his time...........awesome
