This absolutely works. Anyone trying this pls be patient to keep writing because the ink sometimes does not come out immediately although you're sure it got it. After a few seconds it would. Just give it time to flow. Thanks again Ken.
This is brilliant! I tried syringing ink directly into the cartridge after removing the nib but the ink would just spill out no matter how slow i go. Probably due to the air bubbles trapped inside, which you solved in your method. Will certainly try this method soon!
This method is awesome. You only need an insulin syringe, available everywhere. BTW, your method N°3 is also good, but you must find a 3mm int diam silicon tube.
With the syringe, a piece of plumber tape around the metal part of the cartridge might help seal the joint with syringe.

Important to hold it vertically such that cartridge is below the syringe. As u suck air out, the vacuum will suck ink in. Ink will fall to bottom of cartridge from gravity and get soaked up in the fiber thing inside. The next time u pull the plunger, air will come out again and as plunger gets pushed, ink fills up the vacuum. If syringe is below cartridge, the air exchange hole is always ink filled and air can't come out.

@@Vanessa-ts2xhi have not tried it but i think it will work. pilot v5 ink is water soluble and behaves like fountain pen ink. pls try and let us know.

Hi Kenneth, great vids. I'm attempting the v3 method however I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I've made an air tight seal and as I pull the syringe out it draws ink out of the breather hole however ink wont go back inside the breather hole. When I release the syringe, it does retract towards the cartridge slightly but ink won't go into the breather hole. Any ideas?
Be sure to hold the syringe up, ink cartridge down, let gravity pull the ink down over the breather hole. As u release the syringe, vacuum will suck the ink in.

no, i didn’t flush the old ink out. but if u wish to, u could. just hold cartridge up, syringe down, and push/pull syringe to remove ink. fill with water then remove. caveat, wont be able to remove all the ink/water totally.
so i just use up the old ink then refill it. the new colour will slowly appear.
It's work. Refill many times, but i think every core have limit time to refill.
according to Parker’s patent, it is an air chamber inside the metal portion with the usual finned feed like that of a fountain pen. As long as the ink used doesn’t gum up the capillary ink path and the rolling ball doesn’t wear out, it will go on and on. The refill in the video is still working since dec 2015.
I using a faber castle pen with 705 refill can it work on that refill?i have open the cover behind and there are white liquid inside
Can u pls provide a link with pictures of the refill? I tried googling it but there are quite a number of search results. Some are ballpoint, some roller ball, etc. Based on your description of a "white liquid" at the back of the pen, it sounds like it is some kind of gel refill. This method won't work on gel type of refills. According to the patent, parker rollerballs are designed to use fountain pen ink!

Looking at the patent, Parker has designed their mechanism to work nicely with their fountain pen ink. Hence, it would be safe to use any kind of dye based fountain pen ink. The inks I've tried successfully are : Parker Quink, Pelikan 4001, an Indian made ink "Bril dye-based fountan pen ink", Ecoline water colour inks.
oh my goodness! This is AMAZING! ha! I have my mother's old Tiffany ballpoint pen and it has a cartridge SIMILAR but not exact to this. For one thing, it has a black cap in the back and is marked EXEC3 TIFFANY & CO made in Germany. I'm wondering if I could do the same thing to it! But the back end of it makes me dubious... like maybe it would be better to take that off and fill it that way? but then how do I reset the vacuum? she passed away a little over a year ago and while I'm trying to reduce waste in my life I want to keep using this pen as my primary pen. It's all scratched up so it really only has sentimental value anyway. If you ever do a refill video on one of those cartridges, I can't find anyone out there doing this kind of thing! And Tiffany's stopped supplying the refills a while ago. Apparently its a thing. So me and a few others out there who love our Tiffany's T clip ballpoint pens would sure appreciate it!!!
if it is a ball point pen (the ones whose ink is a thick paste) unfortunately i haven’t figured out a way to find the ink. But it might be possible to make some kind of adaptor to fit modern ballpoint pen refills in it. the key portion is the length of the refill, whether the front part of the refill can go thru the hole in front and the spring support. can u pls send me a picture of your cartridge with a ruler beside it?

Can I assume this technique can also be used for cleaning old ink out? I want my ink to stay true to color and not be tarnished by any old ink. Reds. Apache Sunset. Greens. etc.
M3nac3r, i dont think this technique can clean out old inks. unlike pilot varsity pens, i think there's a felt fiber rod inside the casing that would absorb and hold the ink, and the ink cant be sucked out of it.

Quick query: which ink does Parker Navigator Roller Ball uses out of the box?
Probably parker QUINK ink. But I think any fountain pen ink will work. Pls try it out and let us know. I've not seen that refill before. I've just placed an order for it to try it out 🙂
@@leewmlee Oh that's because Navigator Roller Ball Refill is only for sale in India and Nepal by an Indian Pen company. I learned this only after posting this query here. Anyway yes, most likely it's the Quink ink cause that name is there on the refill pack too. BTW, thanks for responding so quickly.

If you'd remove the front tip portion and put the ink then re-insert the it, then what happens?
If u can do that, I think it will work. In any case, pls try it, make a video and let us learn from it. When one day my cartridge stops working, I will break it apart. Right now, it is still working fine.

Actually I found this vid today and it perfectly fits my needs. However, I am curious wether or not, did any of your refills leak later? I'm a little bit nervous because I don't want my pen-case to be stained
After refilling, pls pay attention at the end to use a tissue to suck out the excess ink stuck in the air hole. Once that is done, in my years of testing, i have not encountered any leakages so far. Theoretically, if the pen is capped properly, any ink that comes out will remain in the cap. Just like when a fountain pen is dropped.
From your experience... Are there inks (fountain pen inks) that work better or worse with those refills/cartridges?
@@Ranowik98 , so far the inks I tried are water soluble: blue/green/black pelikan 4001, and blue/black Quink. For more colour options, I'm quite sure the Ecoline water colour inks would give excellent results as I've used it in my fountain pens.

@Jade, I've tried Parker Quink and Pelikan 4001 fountain pen inks with great success. Some fountain pen ink formulations make use of colouring pigments; I'm not sure if the pigments will clog the feed in the long run. There are also other waterproof india inks which will definitely clog the feed. Once the feed is clogged, there's no way to open it for cleaning. The only waterproof ink that is safe to use is Noodler's cellulose reactive dye inks. My Dec 2015 refill is still going strong. I've lost count on the number of times I refilled it. The only drawback is that the refill is getting more squeaky.
Where do you buy the ink to refill gel pens ? Red Green etc.
unfortunate, we can’t buy those inks. if u search the patent website, the formulation is listed. normal fountain pen inks are not viscous enough and they dry out. i hv tried adding gun arabic to fountain pen ink with limited success.
parker rollerball refills on the otherhand are designed to use normal fountain pen inks. u can use parker quink, pelican 4001, water colour dye inks etc
I see you are using a medium tip rollerball. Does this work also with a "fine" tip?

I haven't got a change to study Lamy/Montblanc's refills but the principal is the same. One just need to find out where the "air hole" is, create a vacuum over it, cover it with ink, release vacuum, ink goes through the air hole and the fiber cartridge absorbs the ink. It is important that the similar type of ink is used. Waterproof inks and water soluble inks won't mix well.
Have you tried using it on Lamy?
If my cartridge is already filled do I have to empty it first?
I would rather not do it until the original ink finishes. The original ink looks much more darker and saturated. Enjoy it first. But if u want to fill a half empty cartridge, it will work. It is not possible to empty out a cartridge with this method.
Do you think this method could work on ohto 0.5 ball refill as well?...
Yes, I think it will work with the Ohto ceramic roller ball refill. I read in the cultpens web site that it uses liquid ink. If u are able to, pls try it out, video it and let us know. I would be keen to learn from u to.

u're almost there! thats because it has compressed air inside. before removing syringe, hold vertical (syringe up, cartridge down), pull the syringe to create a vacuum inside the cartridge, then remove syringe. the vacuum inside will suck the ink in. be sure not to overfill as u can always refill it later. if overfilled, u will find ink dribbling out. if it happens, easiest is just keep cleaning with tissues to remove excess.

And, I'm using Rotring ink which is more viscous than a normal ink. Is it a root cause of this issue?
@@Sam_Gowman I'm using Parker Quink ink and Pelikan 4001 inks in the cartridge and to date, it is still working. I have another cartridge where it got too dry and the dried ink clogged up the ink path. I couldn't clear the clog and had to throw it away. I think the high viscosity Rotring ink will definitely jam the ink path. The cartridge was designed to be used with standard dye-based fountain pen inks.

jonasxdufek - I hv used pelican 4001 green/blue ink without issues. After refilling quite a number of times, mine is getting a bit squeaky when writing but is still going fine. Very hardy/strong construction. Unlike pilot hitech pens where the ball will suddenly drop out.

Sikander Gupta - I have used Parker Quink and Pelikan 4001 Blue and green inks which success. They mix well with each other and did not cause problems.

About a little more than 1ml. I wont try to fill it totally full in case it leaks. Remember, u can always refill it...

It wont work for ballpoint refills. They use an oily viscous ink instead water soluble fountain pen ink. Sheaffer also makes a rollerball refill which might work but i hv not tried it before as i hv not used those before.

Unfortunately no. It works only on the rollerball refills which makes use ofmliquid ink.

i tried it out i think ink is going in through the injection part but nothing is coming out while writing :(
It could be that the ink has dried up in the rolling ball area. Put a drop of water on paper and write tiny circles in the water drop. This allows water to go behind the rolling ball and dissolve the dried ink.

darwen sanders - yes, if the ink is water soluble and non-gel based. I didn't get very good results for gel-based ink cartridge. For those, the ink flow was too great; eg pilot G2 refills. If the pen didn't have an air tight pen cap, that was a sign that it won't work as well as the ink will evaporate at the ball when not in use after a few days.

If u don't mind ruining an empty refill to learn, refill with clear water. As u suck out the air, pull the plunger out slowly and observe where the bubbles come out from. It is not very obvious by just looking at the nib area.
