It's such a shame that this movie never got recognition or any nomination of any kind. Blows my mind because this film and its soundtrack is truly spectacular
I just watched this movie, it's 2.00pm in Australia 24/7/2024. I'm a 64 year old, married female with 2 sons 37 and 34 and wow l loved it. LOVED IT! This song is so inspirational, the whole movie is. Well done!❤
I cried watching this scene in the cinema, because as a teen we all imagine people who don't love you loving you, your crush liking you back, and your teachers and classmates liking you and supporting you. And Conor's imagination shows that exactly; it's the opposite of his real life. And that hit me real hard.
This is your life, You can be anything You gotta learn to rock and roll it, You gotta put the pedal down And drive it like you stole it! What a great piece of songwriting!
This movie has everything. Comedy, drama, romance... it's about loving music, chasing your dreams, impressing the girl you love... but above all, it's a movie about brothers. I never get tired of it. Oh, and we really should give credit to Darren. After all, he was the one who introduced Eamon to Connor.
Bryan Jmm forget an oscar this song should win a grammy; this song is far Superior to some of the contemporary garbage studios sorry i mean "musicians" put out. This song is emotional and pure not just another cliche knock off love song.
The reason I love this film is largely because of the relationship Brendan and Conor (and the friendship between Conor and Eamon) - and *that* end. It's so good because Brendan gives Conor the chance that he himself never got. Remember when Conor talked about how Brendan wanted to run away to Germany but got caught? Now his brother's doing the same thing, and he's asking for his help. And Brendan is just so ecstatic because someone got out of that rotten house - someone in that family of his actually got a *chance.* There's a nice little touch there at the end too: the entire film Conor is just writing songs about Brendan, and in the end, Brendan writes a song about him. There's something just so beautiful about that and about how Brendan chooses to live his dream through/by helping his brother achieve it. Also - Jack Reynor (the guy who played Brendan) deserved at least an Oscar nomination for his role. Never have I seen an actor do so much with a character in so little screen time; he made Brendan leap right off the screen from the very first scene and feel so real. And the director - the same guy who directed Once! - deserves a nod, too.
What I took from the film is not that his older brother was stopped from running away for a better life, but that he was too scared to take that leap of faith. He says the mother found out and stopped him leaving, and that's possible, but I think the real thing holding him back was his own fear. He loves his younger brother, guides him and helps him, but there is a big element of jealousy there too, that the kid is doing what he was unable to do. Of course the happy ending is that not only does the kid form a kickass band, and run off to seek a manager and an escape from the poor life that they're trapped in, but that the older brother is able to let go of his own envy, and his own bitterness at what might have been, and can be happy for his brother. I mean either version is possible, but big bro comes out of it looking good either way in the end. I like the version I saw, I feel there's more character development for him there. I like to think Sing Street made it big, and Brendan wrote them some great songs and found his own way to join the music scene through it.
this movie was freaking amazing!!! how come it's not promoted like so many crappy movies out there?...great storyline, well written and portrayed characters and awesome original music! 100/100

Here’s the deal this movie epitomized my childhood in the 80’s even though it’s from the lens of some kids from Ireland, I honestly believe this movie fucking nailed it. The music, the mannerisms were just spot on. I came across this film just scrolling through what to watch, and this movie made me smile. It’s truly underrated!!
Agree, but I was more distracted by how "poor" kids got an original Simmons electronic drum kit. The "brain" alone is now 2,500+, plus 6-900 for the drums themselves. Since they were new-new, I'm.going to say they were REALLY expensive. You'll note you don't hear any cymbals with this type of drum because they sucked. They suck way less now, but they're 7,500 now (the Rolands are the best, Simmons is owned by Guitar Center, who's ruining them as we speak). On occassion, they'd put acoustic cymbals on the e-drums.

It's now (2022) on Pluto, free TV. Hopefully it will get wider recognition. The third of John Carney's music trilogy, Once, Begin Again, and Sing Street.
@@brownjatt21 They're both very good. My personal favorite of the three is Begin Again, but most people prefer Once or Sing Street. And there's a new one now called Flora and Son that I haven't seen yet, but I really want to soon. Update: I watched Flora and Son and didn't really like it. Not only is it my least favorite of John Carney's movies that I've seen, but I just don't think it's a particularly good movie in general. It wasn't awful or anything, though. Worth checking out if you're curious. You might like it.
I think he really looks like young John Cusack in the movie Say Anything (1989), and the style are quite similar too considering they're in the same era, well kinda
I love the whole story line .. Imagine being that motivated by a beautiful woman to come up with an band and actually create some of the best music I've ever heard 🤘 and they were like 16 year olds
I've seen tons of movies and I have to say this one has the best soundtrack and sticky songs. You know it's a good movie when it's 5 stars on Netflix. I was surprised that it was from 2016 and already on there. Pure gold this movie. Amen!
pasxizeis Well yeah, that's the whole point of the film. All of the songs are heavily inspired from the 80s. This one in particular sounds like Maneater from Hall and Oates or I'm Still Standing by Elton John. Still it is quite a good song 😊
Movies like this make me wanna write music and make a band. EDIT (DEC 2020): Nowhere near that, working to be a filmmaker (partly inspired by movies like this) but it's a passion I want to explore later down the road, The Beatles are huge inspiration to me, I'd like to make some music like that. EDIT AGAIN (DEC 2020): Rewatched it for the 5th time or something, god this film is so f***ing good. I need a sequel.
+Lee Ragdoll - There really is a good chance for that. It will never be nominated for best film (Unfortunately). But, best song, probably. And, Either way, this is a great film. Also, I hope you saw ONCE (2007). Another John Carney film that won best song at the Academy Awards.
Theo Lamp Yeah I think it's not possible for it to get a Best film nomination but it's a STRONG competitor for Best Soundtrack and Best original song!!!
I get the feeling, at year's end, the Original Song awards will be between this and something from "Moana" because of the Lin-Manuel Miranda craze (that isn't meant as a bad thing. The man is brilliant).
+Will C - I agree. Disney almost always gets a nomination for best song. But, I hope one of the songs from SING STREET wins. The songs in John Carney's films are always so integral to the story. I especially loved RIDDLE OF THE MODEL for that reason. But, I think DRIVE IT LIKE YOU STOLE IT is the one they will put up for nomination. Can you believe that this film only did $3 Million in US box office. And, it had a higher box office in South Korea than it did in either the US or UK. Best wishes, Ted
Everyone's buzzing about La La Land, but I thought Sing Street was the best musical of the year. And I say that as someone who loves jazz and classic musicals. The songs in Sing Street are better integrated into the story, and I genuinely care about the characters.
They were both really good yes, but true. I saw Sing Street way after seeing La La Land (today, actually) and honestly the songs that Sing Street made in the movies are outstanding, and the songs truly felt like they were coming from popular bands
gokinsmen I watched 'La La Land' & thought it was over rated & for the life of me cannot understand ... How it won an Award...?.. I worked in a Video Store when 'Sing' was released & it wasn't until our shop closed that I actually got to see this movie...Well.. I loved it...💖
I am a dancer and musical theatre performer and lover and this movie is my favourite. Made me cry, laugh and sing. Didn’t enjoy La La Land thought it was disappointing for all the hype, may have liked it if it wasn’t so hyped but Sing Street is never talked about but I just adore it so much
I watch this every movie every Friday after school to remind me that all the stupid shit I’m going through is just a minor part of my life and some day I’ll be able to sail away from my own problems on my own tiny boat.
When I went to my ten year high school reunion, which was, Jesus, twenty years ago, the first thirty to forty-five minutes of the reunion all anyone to everyone did was walk around and apologize for the way we acted in high school. There wasn’t one, remember this, remember that? It was, let’s forget high school ever happened.
I just threw this movie on randomly while looking for something to play on Netflix. And I am so glad I did. I loved this film. The vibes, the music, the story. It just all worked so well. And the music has been stuck in my head too!
After watching this movie, Ive got a sudden urge to want to speak with an Irish accent all the time. This movie is tops all the way around. That's how you make a film. A modern day classic. Thank you cast and crew. You've touched a lot of hearts with this film and many will be forever grateful. ❤️😍💕😊🙏
I’ve been listening to this song on repeat for the last two hours and i just can’t seem to get bored of it. I guess I needed it’s vibes. Also, it's one of the greatest songs I've ever heard TBH.
I just watched this movie last night and I haven’t seen a film this great in ages. Everything from the story, characters and music, top tier. As an 80s baby, this was life. I cannot stop thinking about this film or music.

Lyrics: You just can't stand the way that I walked out from the wreckage Can't understand the way that I turned myself around I try to terminate this war, with you But you won't let it go you keep coming back for more Freedom I'm taking it back I'm outta here, no turning back In a baby blue Cadillac Just when I was stalling, I heard an angel calling This is your life, you can go anywhere You gotta grab the wheel and own it and drive it like you stole it Rollin, this is your life, you can be anything You gotta learn to rock and roll it, you gotta put the pedal down And drive it like you stole it, and drive it like you stole it We get stuck in the dirt and we cant see where we're going We've faced all kinds of hurt and the friction slows us down But I won't be waiting here for the world to end in gold I leave your dust behind me stranded in the road Freedom I'm taking it back Attitude I'm giving it back, in a baby blue Cadillac Just when I was stalling, I heard an angel calling This is your life, you can go anywhere You gotta grab the wheel and own it, you gotta put the pedal down And drive it like you stole it This is your life, you can go anywhere You gotta grab the wheel and own it and drive it like you stole it Rollin, this is your life, you can be anything You gotta learn to rock and roll it, you gotta put the pedal down And drive it like you stole it And drive it like you stole it And drive it like you stole it And drive it like you stole it
Saw this movie on a recent flight. Had never heard of it before. An amazingly well made film. This song is gold ! Captures the essence of the movie, does justice to everything good about 80s sounds. Well acted, well directed and an excellent story line. This song needs more radio play so kids can hear the positive stuff than so much of the nonsense out there !
He's just super charismatic and talented. It's CRAZY to hear him talk about how he finished the film and then had to go back to high school like nothing happened. I couldn't even imagine. He also had no previous acting experience. The director said it's easier to teach people who can't act how to act in movies than it is to teach kids who have been taught to act badly to act in movies.
This is such an amazing song if you really listen to the lyrics. It literally makes me want to chase my dreams. Im listening to it every morning now. I watched the movie again yesterday and wow, still love it so much. What an amazing film.
Biggest Oscar Snub in Oscar history! This film should have easily had at least 6 Oscar nominations (Best Original Song, Best Supporting Actor, Best Costume Design, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture)
La La Land is not only a technical masterpiece, with breathtaking cinematography and a terrific score, but also has two of the best performances of the decade. Chazelle’s screenplay is much better structured, unique and emotional than Sing Street’s. His characters are masterfully developed and their arcs and plot of the story all work in favor of theme of the film. His direction is also on a completely different level than the one on this film, which is bland and uninspired. The plot mocks the genre and American movies, yet does the same it criticizes. None of the band members are real characters, except Connor. They’re just there to be part of the band. Acting wise, there’s one pretty good performance, by the big brother. That’s it. The rest are either bad or decent. Most of the arcs for characters wrap up in satisfactory, yet unearned and predictable ways. Everyone is a plot device. However, I agree a best Original song nomination was deserved. I could also see a supporting actor and costume design. La La Land is a modern masterpiece however. This movie’s fresh but nothing special. Cheers.
Anyone notice that the one time Rafina doesn't show up, it's for the THROWBACK song? bc earlier in the movie, the band claimed and promised they were Futurists. "No looking back, only forward."
It's a nice concept but it is assuming the film is set in our present, so I don't think it's the case because Sing Street takes places in the 80s therefore the Back to the Future references are not a "throwback."
@@1mango809 i think it is because they're referring to the prom dance scene which takes place in the 50's that's where all the "throwback" thing comes from.

I watched this movie way back 2017 and I had blast back then! I was so hype after I watched this movie, the soundtracks really brought back 80’s new wave style of music with a modern twist! Until now, this song really gives me motivational vibe! 😄

Seen it 3 times and that's just a start.

This is one of the few modern day movies set in the 80s that ACTUALLY has the 80s vibe to it.
This movie finally did justice to the 80's genre unlike Rock of Ages which was just awful.

Update: I watched Flora and Son and didn't really like it. Not only is it my least favorite of John Carney's movies that I've seen, but I just don't think it's a particularly good movie in general. It wasn't awful or anything, though. Worth checking out if you're curious. You might like it.
Best movie of the year so far! :D

lol no
Ethan Hornshaw lol yes
Not Jack Douglass nope. So predictable, everything went so easily, everything is so "easy"
How is it predictable! I would love to know!
I love Eamon the rabbit boy❤️❤️
He kinda looks like Matt Healy (Vocalist from 1975) in real life
a real friend
I think he really looks like young John Cusack in the movie Say Anything (1989), and the style are quite similar too considering they're in the same era, well kinda
+spookylovely oh i see! You are right though!
He looks like Matthew Healy and Dan Howell's love child
I love the whole story line .. Imagine being that motivated by a beautiful woman to come up with an band and actually create some of the best music I've ever heard 🤘 and they were like 16 year olds
Isn't that how EVERY band gets going? Lol

Decided to watch this film on netflix after seeing how high of a score it got on RottenTomatoes. Worthy of all the praise for sure.
Great movie, great actors and great soundtrack !!! yeaaaaahhh, love from France...
Watched this movie 2 days ago and this song has been on constant play ever since
Such a banger!!! 🔥🔥🔥
Same here
I've seen tons of movies and I have to say this one has the best soundtrack and sticky songs.
You know it's a good movie when it's 5 stars on Netflix. I was surprised that it was from 2016 and already on there. Pure gold this movie. Amen!
This is like a modern version of an 80s hit
pasxizeis Well yeah, that's the whole point of the film. All of the songs are heavily inspired from the 80s. This one in particular sounds like Maneater from Hall and Oates or I'm Still Standing by Elton John. Still it is quite a good song 😊
@@MovieAddictMitch Definitely can feel those influences! Sounds like a strange (but amazing) mix between the two imo
Yes. Just ignore that the kid drummer isn't the guy on the record :) it doesn't "match."
Mitchell Palmski and Part Time Lover by Stevie Wonder
If you watched the movie you'll notice that it takes inspiration from Maneater an 80s song.
La La Land was nice and beautiful, but this, this touched my soul.
yes!!!! i connected with it because i have a big brother similar to the one in this film.
Chí Thiện Nguyễn Lê same
Sameeeee
Movies like this make me wanna write music and make a band.
EDIT (DEC 2020): Nowhere near that, working to be a filmmaker (partly inspired by movies like this) but it's a passion I want to explore later down the road, The Beatles are huge inspiration to me, I'd like to make some music like that.
EDIT AGAIN (DEC 2020): Rewatched it for the 5th time or something, god this film is so f***ing good. I need a sequel.
right!!
Do it rn.
World needs more music uwu
This is the purpose from this movie, not exactly joinin to a band at least just the feelling to do that
Yo should. Now we got plenty of time.
Do it, that's all
Imagine if this song is played at Academy award ceremony... My mind will be blown completely
EDIT: WTF? Not an academy nomination
"Once,"another John Carney's movie won the oscar for best song, and "begin again" get the nomination.
Its possible
I love both movies
gokinsmen I watched 'La La Land' & thought it was over rated & for the life of me cannot understand ...
Didn’t enjoy La La Land thought it was disappointing for all the hype, may have liked it if it wasn’t so hyped but Sing Street is never talked about but I just adore it so much
I was bored AF with La la...same old crap. Saw it a million times.
This movie was fantastic for so many different reasons. I really really wish it got more attention, because it deserves it.
This movie and its soundtrack are criminally underrated. I saw this movie opening night at Sundance and I cried. It's such a good movie.
this movie was amazing. this song is one of my favorite out of the track
I randomly clicked on this movie on a plane and was pleasantly surprised with how great it was.
Same thing happened to me on a flight back in 2016! Instantly loved this movie and bought the DVD as soon as I could.
I loved the fact that Raphina helps them I thought she was going to be a bitch or something, also the whole cast is so charismatic.

This was the best movie I'd seen in a long time.
I watch this every movie every Friday after school to remind me that all the stupid shit I’m going through is just a minor part of my life and some day I’ll be able to sail away from my own problems on my own tiny boat.
Beautiful mindset. Keep being strong 👍
I hope you are doing great right now, and if not just keep being strong! It'll get better, I promise :)
this a very kind of friday movie. well done there
One day you will See school was just a small unimortant part of your Life 👍👍👍
My pick for Best Original Song of 2016! Academy Awards, take note.
This is my "dance like no one is watching" song.

Lyrics:
You just can't stand the way that I walked out from the wreckage
Can't understand the way that I turned myself around
I try to terminate this war, with you
But you won't let it go you keep coming back for more
Freedom
I'm taking it back
I'm outta here, no turning back
In a baby blue Cadillac
Just when I was stalling, I heard an angel calling
This is your life, you can go anywhere
You gotta grab the wheel and own it and drive it like you stole it
Rollin, this is your life, you can be anything
You gotta learn to rock and roll it, you gotta put the pedal down
And drive it like you stole it, and drive it like you stole it
We get stuck in the dirt and we cant see where we're going
We've faced all kinds of hurt and the friction slows us down
But I won't be waiting here for the world to end in gold
I leave your dust behind me stranded in the road
Freedom
I'm taking it back
Attitude I'm giving it back, in a baby blue Cadillac
Just when I was stalling, I heard an angel calling
This is your life, you can go anywhere
You gotta grab the wheel and own it, you gotta put the pedal down
And drive it like you stole it
This is your life, you can go anywhere
You gotta grab the wheel and own it and drive it like you stole it
Rollin, this is your life, you can be anything
You gotta learn to rock and roll it, you gotta put the pedal down
And drive it like you stole it
And drive it like you stole it
And drive it like you stole it
And drive it like you stole it
Fair play to you 👏

Saw this movie on a recent flight. Had never heard of it before. An amazingly well made film. This song is gold ! Captures the essence of the movie, does justice to everything good about 80s sounds. Well acted, well directed and an excellent story line. This song needs more radio play so kids can hear the positive stuff than so much of the nonsense out there !
I'm just turning 15 years old and playing this on my dad's bass now. Don't know how I'd live without 80s style:)
Taegan Hallahan marry me please
80's will always be the coolest era.
70s and 80s had the best music...ever. Actually between say 1965, Stones, later Beatles, Led Zeppelin, up to M. Jackson and thriller, say 1985.
Great soundtrack! I bought it. I play it like I bought it. :)
Do you mean you play it like you stole it?
Yes I do
hahaha!
+DJ Alixer - The DVD is coming out 7/26. I've already ordered mine. Buy it and fly with it.
DJ Alixer ahaha brilliant!
La verdad es que me sorprendio esta película, la encontre super linda y me encanta que respete las canciones de los 80's.
just watched it, my god this kid can act!!
@JazGalaxy yeah I saw him say that in an interview
This is one of the best movies ever for me. Btw Lucy Boynton is perfect ♥
This is such an amazing song if you really listen to the lyrics. It literally makes me want to chase my dreams. Im listening to it every morning now. I watched the movie again yesterday and wow, still love it so much. What an amazing film.
this movie is so relatable because i, too would start a band just to impress lucy boynton.
Who wouldn't
Honestly same
Same lmfao
Wouldn’t we all
I love her voice. So tentative a lost and struggling at the same time. Of course, beautiful, too.
Biggest Oscar Snub in Oscar history! This film should have easily had at least 6 Oscar nominations (Best Original Song, Best Supporting Actor, Best Costume Design, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Picture)
It's even better than La la land
Certainly original song if nothing else.
I mean the whole damn movie is better than La la land
"No looking back, only forward."
whoa
Dude...*insert illuminate theme here*. Nicely done. This is actually my favorite movie
This movie is so Underrated
this song legitimately gets me so hyped omg- this movie is my comfort film and there's nothing better than that sax solo!! 10/10
