I can also recommend Te Huia; that's the commuter service from Hamilton to Auckland. They use the same locomotives as the Wairarapa Connection, and the coaches are also Mk2s; just rebuilt in a completely different way.
I should also mention that Te Huia's coaches (classified in the 'SR' series) were first refurbished around 2004 for Auckland commuter services, for which they were originally classified as 'SA' or 'SD' (the latter is a cab-car). They have since been replaced by CAF-built EMUs. (This was my own trip report on Te Huia, inspired by you and other rail travel TH-camrs): th-cam.com/video/v-MiTAdQhTA/w-d-xo.html
I miss working with these vehicles as a shunter. I worked with the old WW2-era A-class 56 foot carriages and the SW and SE series carriages introduced in 2007 and 2008.
Thanks for another great and interesting video. I wonder what the fate of the DXBs and DFBs will be when the new Stadler built DM class Locomotives enter service in the next few years.
Lovely video! Can’t wait to see more. Will you make a video or spotlight video on Auckland’s Passenger Rail Network? Covering the history of not just the locomotives and carriages/MUs but the stations and other aspects too? Maybe even the future of the network such as the CRL? Thanks anyway!
I should probably tell you my plans for Wednesday. I'm heading into Wellington from Carterton on this train and spending the day in Wellington and then in the evening I'm getting the train back to Carterton
Sounds like fun. Incidentally I don't know Carterton at all (besides the station, although I did go through there on SH2 to go see H 199 in Featherston last year).
Here is a fact about the Wairarapa Line, When there a Rail Replacement Buses from Upper Hutt to Wellington and The Trains do Masterton To Upper Hutt,Because Upper Hutt doesn't have a turntable there are two train one at each end
Can't wait to try this service. Amazing how they use Mk2s all the way down there, I'm surprised the aircon can cope! 😂

@@DC4260Productions Interesting, thanks. I will add it to my plan.

Probably much like the DC locos - pensioned off then sold or cut up for scrap.
Looks like a good train trip
Currently it's top and tailed dfbs and replaced in a few years with 3car hybrids

Your Maori pronunciation is pretty good mate! Also really loved the information about this service
That’s not the only diesel hauled train… what about the capital connection?
The Capital Connection is an inter-city service provided by KiwiRail, rather than a Metlink Commuter service.
Isn't the capital connection also metlink?
No, it's operated by KiwiRail.
@@DC4260Productions Okay I stand corrected.
not yet, It will be handed over to metlink in either 2027 or 2028 and will be renamed to the Manawatu Line when the new Tri mode units enter service.
@@icenoob-cf2qr I didn’t realise the tender would be completed so early. Have the bidders released any graphics yet?
