I've loved this movie for 30 years now. It always struck me as tragic that Songlian wasn't wed to Chen Feipu. Ugh!!! So much tragedy fell into this poor unfortunate young lady's life. This film is one of my top 3.
I could not appreciate this movie when it was launched, 30 years later, I love this movie, relates well to modern life when there are so many psychopaths that lies and uses facade to get what they want. I actually cried watching it recently.
I just watched the movie yesterday and loved it. The sexiest, hottest wife was the third wife, but she was a dangerous character and made an unforgivable mistake. The fourth wife succumbed to her emotions, the most insidious wife was the second wife. The first wife had already completed her duty, her presence did not affect the competition.

Meishan was the Master's favorite, so Second Wife wanted to eliminate her. She was also plotting against Fourth Wife since she was new, young and beautiful. She didn't see the first wife as any competition and probably ended up eliminating Fifth Wife since she was even younger and more beautiful than either Meishan or Songlian. Basically, Second Wife was a damned viper who would stop at nothing to be the one in power.
