Mate, your so called simple preparation makes you a total expert. You leave nothing to chance and deserve the success you clearly have. No need to apologise for your unorthodoxies ways, they have served our rural forbears from time immemorial . You are a bloody legend in my books.
You remind me of my father with your methods. I was raised on a farm ,we had sheep cattle and 300chooks. We were always having problems with foxes taking our chooks, we locked them up every night in coups unfortunately the foxes would rip holes in the netting and take a chook. So what dad used to do if a hook died dad would roast it slightly and drag it around the hen houses then down to an old dead branch just out of reach of the foxes and set four traps under neath , sure enough the fox would pick up the scent and follow down to the bait once it got caught you would heir it from the house and dad would go down and shoot it ,this method never failed . Keep up the good work.
I liked how you assessed the area and dissected the area for traps. Hopefully your sets will have success.
Clarke, I have noted in some of videos that you have mentioned about heavy sweat droplets falling on the traps surroundings. A simple method of "clothing" that I would use use were sweat headbands and wrist sweat bands and or teer-towelling neck sweat bands. I am a heavy sweater and I have that they work a treat. Have a few sets particularly when I am working or trekking in the bush. Give them a go and you will be surprised

My trip Aus was in your fall/autumn , I had to go to work in the north oilfield in the dead of winter . I crossed the equator, dateline and arctic circle in one day. Great video cheers

Trapping on frozen ground it tough . Have to bring you own dry dirt to make set . Or it will freeze and animals will walk right over it . Also we’re rubber gloves as to leave less scent .

Try a trapline without gloves, simply earth your hands and rub dirt into them before each set. See if you really find that you catch less or if it makes no difference.

Thanx mate for the information.. It is invaluable knowledge.. I myself don't have the time to leave traps in for anymore than three days due to work so to have them set correctly and to be working as effectively as possible is very important to me... thanx again for the info

Next those traps of yours, when you were cleaning them at the start, and you said about the rust on them, I'm no expert, but you'll know, something i learnt many years ago.
Do what you do with them that's great, have you thought about giving them a coat of clean motor oil and then burning them? I understand that it might affect the smell for the dogs, but it will certainly keep them rust free.
Your the best at this, i sometimes watch others, but not much i only watch you, maybe not as much as you would like, its time for me I'm not obsessed with the internet like some.
Honestly i would ❤️ one of your pups I've had collies for years, and one cattle kelpie cross who was a beautiful animal.
Thank you. I think it would work well after they were given time back in the dirt to remove he burnt smell. The tannin does a good job, just more work. More pups ahead!!
@ClarkMcGhiesWildCountry Sorry Clark been a bit busy today as far as replying, like i said i would love a pup from you,I've never owned a Koolie but have thought about it, but with a Collie, Koolie cross you most definitely have a good mix.. That way i don't have to have a Koolie on its own.
I really love dogs very much,not big noting myself dogs love me too, i treat them well, i only want one as my best mate, just like beautiful Skunk. 😭 you must be Heartbroken for him.

Setting up traps properly is a must. I agree traps should not left for a week before inspection.

Heck, I go into my cuzzibros place (Clark Rubber) and just get a big sheet of 10mm medium density foam with the linen backing and boil them first before the traps to remove scent.

You ask how we trap in the cold? Much sooner the cold than the heat - you can dress for the cold but there’s no escaping the heat! Much sooner have -20 than +30. C that is…..
With all that said, I’d sure love to spend a few days or a week on the line with you. Maybe we could do a trade???
Have you stopped using paper over pan or plate?
No but I leave it now for the wet times when the dirt will set and block the trap if I use foam.
Do the dogs like the milk in the calf poo?
Use that often. Some love it, others will not touch it.

Are you using Jc Connor traps?
Mostly , yes. The JC Conner Jake trap imported by Professional Trapping on the Gold Coast. The have proven to be fast, reliable and easy to use under our conditions.
@@ClarkMcGhiesWildCountry I use some of them as well I’m a full time county trapper in sheep n goat country in west Texas. Mainly coyotes and pigs. You have a very good channel and I’ve learned a few tricks. I think our rules are a little different regarding traps. I’ve heard y’all are required to use soft jaws. I don’t know that as fact but have read that. I use mainly an American made trap called No BS. It’s crazy how similar our trapping troubles are. Mainly the pigs and stock.
I know you don’t think the use of gloves is necessary. But on harder to catch animals I think handling traps without out then puts way to much scent down. I know you can never be 100 percent scent clean. I like a little rust on mine when I color them to me it helps it to stick.
Leg holds are meant to be checked daily.
Also 🙄 the only legholds we can get in NZ are f...... useless for rabbits. The good old day of gin traps are gone. The new ones are fine for possums (numbers are climbing dramatically) but rabbits don't have a thumb so they are hopeless. 😔

Do the dogs not smell your hand smelling see some people wear gloves to reduce the smell of your skin, is this not necessary
I always ground my hands with dirt before I start. The big issue remains, our body odour which wafts off us onto the ground as we move. Walk across a field, watch a deer or dog cross the same path the next day. They will pause, sniff the scent you left and sometime avoid it. Not diminishing the need for your hands to be odour free, good point.
Why not put the dog urine very close to trap or even on top of the sand on top of the trap, it might dissipate the smell of the steel trap.
