Thank you Mel, that made perfect sense and now I can go to a couple of my patterns and sort out the gaping neckline, one being the back of my Collette Laurel. It drives me bonkers so I tend not to wear them. Your tutorials are always very clear and as the saying goes, knowledge is power, so thanks again! 💪👍Liz
Just finding this today after exactly the same problem I had with a dress I made for Christmas. For now I’ll be adding a small dart (as you did) but great to have instructions on how to adapt the pattern. Thanks so much!
Great tutorial! I knew how to do this but it has to be one of the most useful adjustments that you can do! That process would work on the front too, where ever there is a dart. I was always taught to cut on the leg of a dart rather than the middle but I am not sure it makes any difference! Also, if anyone wanted the shoulders to come in a bit you could close the gapping part in the opposite direction. I do love where the shoulders sit on you though! x
Oooh great additional info!! I’ll add a note to the description about cutting centre of dart or dart leg incase id got that wrong (although it’s turned out fine so hopefully works either way)! Hope your feeling better? X
Good video. Simplifies the pattern adjustment process. I would however have unpicked the facing on your altered dress and made the dart on the single fabric, adjusted the facing by taking out the extra which would leave it tidier and less bulky. Hope that helps.
Hello! What if there isn’t a dart on the back to transfer the extra fabric? I have gaps at the back at the armhole and don’t really want to add darts there. Thank you!
Great thank you I have a slight spare bit at the front neckline of the Sew over it ultimate shift dress does this still work. I have made two small darts at the top of the neckline and seems to have done the job but it does show a bit even though it's a busy print.
Julie Hale hi Julie, yes I think it would (although I haven’t done this adjustment myself) I recon you would just transfer it to the bust dart instead ☺️
Have you watched any of TomKatStitchery's (Whitney) videos? She has some fantastic videos on pattern adjustments. I'm not sure if I've seen her do this one but her techniques are very interesting.
Love your comprehensive instructions on how to fix a gaping back. Love at See Over It, Betty dress. I will definitely get one. Thanks so much!!!!
I found this today, and am delighted as I'm making the Betty dress!! and found the back gaping on my toile. Thankyou so much 😊

I had the same problem with the fit. I'm looking forward to trying this. Did it effect the facing fit?
Hiya, I didn’t use a facing as I lined it, but ids adjust the facing the same way ☺️💖

Thanks Jane ☺️💖
Hi, does this alteration not reduce the back neck depth ?
Oh! Thank yooouuu! I have this problem with Betty dress and couldn't figure it by my self :_
No problem, I hope it helps 💖
Fabulous, thank you! 😀
Did the larger dart at the waist affect the waistline circumference?
Hi Sam no I don’t think it does as when the dart widens it’s only to close the extra space that you have created by making the adjustment ☺️
Thank you for this

Thank you! Did you have help fitting the back, or did you manage with a dress form?
No problem ☺️💖 yes my daughter helped by pinning the surplus fabric
Fab! Thanks!

Great thank you....
Thank you Mel. Can I assume the process is duplicated for facings?
I would agree with your comment, otherwise the facing would be too big, so it would need to be altered.
That’s my problem it’s a really big gap
Lovely tip! Thanks!
