It is a folding canoe of the type used by a crack team of Royal Marines (eventually becoming the Special Boat Squadron) in Operation Frankton on the French port of Bordeaux during World War 2. The book The Cockleshell Heroes is the best account of it, the movie version was rather naff! The marines were taken to the Gironde estuary by submarine where their folding canoes were assembled and launched from the deck of a surfaced sub - HMS Tuna.
