  • In this excerpt from a 2022 interview, Zen Buddhist Abbot Shohaku Okumura describes how time disappears in the present moment, and shares the analogy of firewood, ash and our finite lives.

The cinematic art forms of Interior Mythos Journeys are an effort to reacquaint us with the practices and exercises that have the possibility of delivering us into an encounter with the timeless deep place that is forever with us, but that we have become very skilled at not noticing. Please encounter: As Old as This Universe... Only This Moment, Firewood and Ash
Our Mission: The curriculum of Interior Mythos Journeys is a quest to explore contemporary mythic language that is in harmony with the 21st Century, Global, Quantum Scientific, and Universal Reality in which we all actually live. Learn more at interiormythos.com/
As we solitarily and collectively claim the force of a relevant contemporary mythos, we are delivered to the possibility of life-lived-in-depth, the possibility of authentic life. This is the path beneath the surface.
The Transformative Encounter: The Practice of Contemplation
In the current age this transformative encounter, as well as the practices that deliver us to this encounter and the personal connection that flows from this encounter, is seldom the focus of our lives. Many of us wander disoriented through life, often on a self-destructive path, in a world seen, understood, and measured primarily by the external environment. We are disconnected from the Connecting Myth. We are disconnected from the interior depth to which the Connecting Myth might deliver us. Ironically, we have come to understand myth as a lie rather than a symbolic and metaphoric gateway to a deeper truth.

This is what I have begun to accept in this moment. Now that acceptance is in the past moment.

We are grateful you discovered this channel. We hope you will return often and share your comments freely. There are many videos on this channel. The core teaching is presented in the “Life Journeys” series (check out the Playlists: 49 short videos in this series have been released to date). The “Life Journey” series uses material from some of the greatest living teachers who are mostly unknown to the popular culture; including Abbot Shohaku Okumura, Sister Joan Chittister, and many others from the East and the West. These sequential cinematic art form modules guide one deeper and deeper into consciousness and the practices of a contemporary contemplative. To advance in becoming a contemplative practitioner, we suggest encountering one sequential module per day or some other regular schedule that works for you. The journey begins with “The Presence.” th-cam.com/video/gekfR1jrsko/w-d-xo.html. This sequential contemporary contemplative practitioner journey is an excellent opportunity for solitary inquiry or shared group discussion. We know of no stronger existing guided material to nurture a deep journey in today’s world; for a beginning seeker or a master. The top Comment listed under each module contains a context for the specific video on screen and a link for the next sequential art form. We hope to see more comments and reflections from you again soon. We will always attempt to respond.
If you wish to grasp the underlying intent of these cinematic art forms consider this short practical context: th-cam.com/video/vDChtBZdqiw/w-d-xo.html GO Deep!

Our experience is now, but how does no time/space explain change e.g. child to adult, or a seed to plant? I was once a child I'm now an adult. Is it a case of every past moment happening now as much as every future moment. Where we live in a soup of everything, but our minds only see from the narrative of conditioning and filter all the other realities out?
I think Buddhism follows the teaching of science. In so far as its explanations stall at what is already found through science. But beyond the present science, Buddhism falls short when it comes to clear and detailed reasoning.

@yoya4766, your observation is deeply appreciated. Buddhism, like Christianity, like Islam, Taoism and every other human-created approach to the Absolute Mystery of existence is destined, necessarily, to fall short of “clear and detailed reasoning” in a universe that is absurd and incomprehensible to all confining categories. The value of all such human-created approaches is to deliver us into the awe and awe-full-ness of a relationship with the Absolute Mystery of Reality. We hope to see more of you on this special channel. Please check out the “Life Journey” series available on the home page. GO Deep!

Change is happening now, in this moment. Everything is fresh and born in this moment, change cannot happen in past or future. That child you were is something else, another form, it's not you anymore... it is dead in a sence. You know that because you are not it anymore, you are 100% what you are now. There is no past or future, only your thoughts of them. Thats why it is difficult to understand. Brain/mind or 5 skandhas keep record of things around to navigate trough next moment with anticipation. It is all an illusion. You cannot use thinking mind to grasp reality, it makes no sence. For us is natural to have linear thinking and to track progress but it is all in our mind, true passage of time doesn't exist. As master said it's only on devices. You cannot capture infinity in some frame as he said, because then you can divide it and it is not infinite anymore. It is always 0 always fresh because of that it is always something else, something new but still one and the same thing.

No time/space doesn't need to explain change... The two are not wedded together.

@@MrJbellguitar You may not think it needs to explain change. They are wedded together as in the time space continum. Once I was a child now I'm grown up, that's change over time. I look, feel and think differently.
