    This video helped so much. I was able to get my daughter's purple gi using your mix last year. Now rite has an eggplant color which is an even darker purple. Came out really nice. Thank you so much for your video, I could not have done this without your help.;

    My man! After hours of aggravation of trying to find a purple gi, I gave up and said "I'll look on youtube on how to dye a gi." And you just so happen to be making a purple one. That's a nice shade of purple. I want to have a cool purple gi like Master Splinter from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

    If I’m just trying to give new life to a black HEMP gi that’s been washed a million times (re-dying with black rit), do you think I’d need to worry about patches and embroidery since they are not cotton? You talked about it for a sec, but was wondering if you could expand on that a bit. Thx!

  • @todei79
    @todei79 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey NerdJitsu, when you machine washed the gi, did you use hot, warm, or cold water?

  • @robertkf1
    @robertkf1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Going to do this, except putting gi in dryer. Cotton shrinks like crazy in dryers. Did that one time with a pair of gi pants that were a size too big, ruined them. Will low setting work or can that step be skipped altogether?

    I have a blue Gracie Barra Gi but have stopped training there, ive cut of all the patches and want to dye it Black. Will it be ok to dye a blue one? Im hoping since im going for black it wont matter.

    I've thought about dying an older white fuji navy blue. I've read that when you first wash it you should put vinegar in the water. Have you heard of this or tried it?
    Thanks for the video, helped out and encouraged me to go ahead and do this. Oss!

    • @nerdjitsu4772
      @nerdjitsu4772  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Beau Babb never heard that. Just follow the instructions on the dye and you'll be fine. Send me a picture when it's done. I'd love to see it.

    That's cool, but I would not show up to practice in such an overly-flashy gi. I think those colors are more for exhibition purposes. I've seen pink for breast cancer awareness month.
    And orange one for Dragon Ball would be cool.

    Hey mate, does your Gi keep white stitches after dyeing? I want to dye and old karate gi of mine navy blue to practive Jojutsu, but i'm afraid it's gonna end blue with white stitches... Anyway, great instructions!

      Btw, In Brazil We don't have that RIT brand of "All purpose dye", just natural fabric dye (cotton, etc) or synth dye (wich is extremely hard to find), and those two don't mix well... Perhaps that amount of salt will do the trick

    • @nerdjitsu4772
      @nerdjitsu4772  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes the thread is synthetic so it either stays white or if you're lucky turns a totally different color. The cotton weave dyes well. Synthetic dyes can be fun. Here we have craft stores with good selections

    Thank you for the tutorial, my white gi got ruined by a washing machine, looking to dye it black

      Chris Street how did it get ruined

    • @TheStreetC
      @TheStreetC 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Slider X the washing machine had these fabric softener spots stuck on the blade inside the washer and I didn’t realize, it left spots similar that you’d get if you wash a lip balm stick with a dress shirt by accident

    • @readyme
      @readyme 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheStreetC How did it turn out? I am concerned black dye will make the gi turn out grey. How much dye did you use?

  • @Seekermichael
    @Seekermichael 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Will the gi shrink when you leave it in the hot water? Since it's cotton, I was worried it could be damaged by the heat.

    • @Boomstck

      It shouldn't shrink much if it's pre-shrunk (most manufacturers will do this), but you should wash a new gi before you dye it anyway and it shouldn't shrink much after that is done. The instructions says the water should ideally be 140ºF, which shouldn't shrink it. But boiling water might be over 200ºF and could shrink it a little more.

    i am a little concerned.. could i accidentally stain my partners white gi rolling in sweaty gis? that would be bad.

    • @SgtSparkles
      @SgtSparkles 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a fair concern. That is why we wash and machine dry to insure that the dye has set.

    • @kaaajeee
      @kaaajeee 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SgtSparkles its that in my exp the dyed and washed clothes still released some dye during some number of washes. like could slightly pink your white T if u put it in the machine together. So the question is about real life experience? ever had white gi stained during rolling?

    • @The_YouTube_Critic
      @The_YouTube_Critic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I did one with Rit. Followed all the directions - used really hot water, salt, machine dried. But the darn thing just kept bleeding out. Even after multiple washes, using borax , etc.. it would still bleed out. I had to wash it a bunch to make sure it wouldn't stain anyone else's gi. It doesn't bleed out anymore, but the color is way faded. I'd recommend buying good quality dye from places like dharma trading co. People have had way better results with that.
