I love the fact The Master is his best film according to you. Yes, it's a polarizing film but it's fucking great. And I completely agree with you about how you felt regarding the movie. I distinctly remember watching it for the first time and being confused and not liking it that much. But there was something about it that stayed with me. Certain scenes, individuals moments, songs, score or the shots. I just didn't know but there was a certain mystique about it and I knew I wanted to revisit the movie. And when I did after almost 3 years, I absolutely loved it and can't wait to watch it over and over again. I think it's PTA's most layered and rich and detailed film to date.
I respect your list. The Master at #1? Respect. 1. Punch-Drunk Love 2. The Master 3. Magnolia 4. Inherent Vice 5. Boogie Nights 6. There Will Be Blood 7. Phantom Thread 8. Hard Eight I'm looking forward to see Licorice Pizza and where it will end up.
My favorite filmmaker of all time. I have the same #8-#9 as you. I think Inherent Vice is by far the most underrated of all of them. I’ve grown to think The Master is his best
PTA is easily one of the best filmmakers of all time. So ranking his movies are damn near impossible but this is what I have at the moment. 1. Boogie Nights 2. There Will Be Blood 3. Magnolia 4. Licorice Pizza 5. Punch Drunk Love 6. Inherent Vice 7. Phantom Thread 8. The Master 9. Hard Eight
My list goes: 1. There Will be Blood 2. Phantom Thread 3. The Master 4. Magnolia 5. Punch Drunk Love 6. Boogie Nights 7. Hard Eight Haven't seen Licorice Pizza or Inherent Vice yet, but this is my list as of now
Altman and Scorsese are my two favourite filmmakers so I cannot escape the pull of a PTA movie. I try to. I loved Boogie Nights and Hard Eight a great deal. But where Altman had obsessions with joy though character and Scorsese, spiritual struggle, PTA kind of alienates me with the slow creep of his films. He has a dark vibe. Even in Punchdrunk love or Magnolia. Bless him. He's a great filmmaker but I have trouble feeling any optimism after most PTA films.
Fantastic work here. A couple deviations (IMO, IV overrated here while PDL underrated) but your read on PTA's filmography is similar to mine. As the list continued, I was rooting for "Phantom Thread" to be your #1. Doesn't feel like I have much company in saying that's his best.
I'll rank them in tiers: I. There Will Be Blood, Phantom Thread, Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love II. Inherent Vice, The Master, Boogie Nights III. Hard Eight
Its always fun doing these rankings with a director that doesn't really make bad films. With how good all these films are, I think the rankings say more about the person making the ranking than the comparative quality of the films, and that's more fun imo.
I think your list is awesome. I'd put Licorice Pizza number 2 because it was just so fun to watch and I like how cute their love is for one another and how it always brings them back together
Nice work man. You get it. I like how you admit to not “getting” some of his films the first time through. I was that way with Inherent Vice and The Master. But those are the two movies Ive come back to the most. Now I can’t go a month without watching them. When my wife falls asleep and Im still up… I immediately put on a PTA film, knowing I’m going to wake up better for it. Absolutely love his work. Can’t wait to see LP.
Dude!!! Literally what you say about Magnolia is what I tell people all the time. Like , exactly what I say… glad to know I share an opinion with someone
I haven’t seen all of these movies. I did watch Licorice Pizza yesterday. It’s a movie I didn’t enjoy. The movie almost felt pointless. It looks great, and the acting is really good. However, the pacing is just so off. The movie has no plot, and like you said, just felt like a series of moments. It went from one point to the next with no sense of time in between.
Finally someone who understands that watching Inherent Vice you need to apply the Tenet philosophy - don't try to understand it, feel it. Nice video, great justifications for the rankings.
I guess everyone has their own PTA preferences. I tend to prefer his more "fun" movies set in 60s/70s SoCal, but that's just me: 1. Boogie Nights 2. Licorice Pizza 3. Magnolia 4. Punch Drunk Love 5. Inherent Vice 6. There Will Be Blood 7. Phantom Thread 8. The Master 9. Hard Eight
My list would be: 1. Magnolia 2. Inherent Vice 3. Boogie Nights 4. Phantom Thread 5. There Will Be Blood 6. Licorice Pizza 7. The Master 8. Punch Drunk Love 9. Hard 8
Really good video and ranking. I just don't know why Hard 8 gets no love? I absolutely loved it, one of his more simple plots, but just really well done.
Great Video! Pretty similar to my ranking 1. There Will Be Blood 2. The Master 3. Phantom Thread 4. Boogie Nights 5. Inherent Vice 6. Licorice Pizza 7. Magnolia 8. Punch Drunk-Love 9. Hard Eight
Haven't thought about what order I'd put them in, but I have the same top 5 - the two with Daniel-Day Lewis, the two with Joaquin Phoenix, and Boogie Nights are the top-tier Anderson imo
9. Hard Eight 8. Magnolia 7. Boogie Nights 6. Inherent Vice 5. There Will Be Blood 4. Licorice Pizza 3. The Master 2. Phantom Thread 1. Punch Drunk Love

There Will be Blood The Master Inherent Vice Boogie Nights Licorice Pizza (only seen it once though) Magnolia Hard Eight Phantom Thread Punch-Drunk Love
1. Magnolia 2. There Will Be Blood 3. The Master 4. Punch-Drunk Love 5. Phantom Thread 6. Boogie Nights 7. Licorice Pizza 8. Inherent Vice 9. Hard Eight
We got the same top 4. 1. The Master 2. There Will Be Blood 3. Phantom Thread 4. Boogie Nights 5. Inherent Vice 6. Punch-Drunk Love 7. Hard Eight 8. Licorice Pizza 9. Magnolia
I agree. The Master is an incredible film. 1. Boogie Nights 2. The Master 3. Magnolia 4. There Will Be Blood 5. Punch Drunk Love 6. Inherent Vice 7. Hard Eight 8. Licorice Pizza 9. Phantom Thread
1. Magnolia 2. Boogie Nights 3. Punch-Drunk Love 4. There Will Be Blood 5. Inherent Vice 6. Hard Eight 7. The Master still haven't seen Phantom Thread or Licorice Pizza yet!
Might as well 1: Phantom Thread 2: Punch Drunk Love 3: There Will Be Blood 4: Licorice Pizza 5: Magnolia 6: The Master 7: Boogie Nights 8: Inherent Vice 9: Hard Eight
I figured you would pick those films as the top 2. Either order is acceptable although my 1 is your 2. On a related note, I know there was always an unspoken competition/comparison between PTA and Tarantino, but even though I’m a big fan of Quentin’s his cannon pales in comparison to PTA’s. QT’s movies overall are more entertaining, but PTA’s films are exponentially more awe-inspiring to me. PTA’s films are more like moving pieces of art.
I suppose it'd be for me... 1) Magnolia 2) Boogie Nights 3) Punch-Drunk Love 4) Inherent Vice 5) The Master 6) Phantom Thread 7) There Will Be Blood 8) Hard Eight Personal preference really, as accomplished as it is I just don't enjoy There Will Be Blood very much.
I knoow it's your opinion and all that jazz, but putting Magnolia8th is braindead. My man said the climax of how people were all connected wasn't great, the climax is that they were NOT
great video though! 9- Punch-Drunk Love 8- Hard Eight 7- Inherent Vice 6- Phantom Thread 5- Licorice Pizza 4- Boogie Nights 3- The Master 2- Magnolia 1- There Will Be Blood
I was more than happy with letting Magnolia be number 8 on your list slide. That's more than fair. Where it ranks on your list is where it ranks. But saying the William H. Macy's character could have been cut without losing anything it's just b******* and a 1/2 lol... Not just emotionally and comedically but also thematically as well his character is very important to the totality of that film
There Will Be Blood is the greatest American film ever made. Yes. I said it, and I'll stand by it until the day I die. I can't wait for Licorice Pizza. 1. TWBB 2. The Master 3. Boogie Nights 4. Magnolia 5. Punch Drunk Love 6. Inherent Vice 7. Phantom Thread 8. Hard Eight
Great video. I’d stop using the word controversial so much though man. Using it once or twice is fine but using it so much makes it seem like you can’t find other words to use.
There Will Be Blood, Boogie Nights and Punch Drunk Love are my favorite PTA films...Licorice Pizza was such a disappointment. You are spot on that their is no narrative connection to the random scenes. Perhaps the editing could have been better. The trailer is so much more entertaining that the 2 plus hours of this meandering (not even in a good PTA way) movie. Hoffman and Haim are solid actors but other than Alana, there is little depth to any characters. Penn and Cooper make cameo's but their scenes could have been cut to make room for more back story to Gary and his family/friends. It's as if the Cooper and Penn asked PTA if they could be in his next movie and he did them a favor and squeezed them in...both of their characters could have had PTA movies based on them alone. Oh yeah, Alana is 25 and Gary is 15 and that'll stay in your mind the whole time. I did enjoy the cinematography as a kid who grew up in SoCal in the 70s and 80s. All they hype and 5 star ratings are a bit much.
Youch!! Magnolia and hard 8 too low but I enjoyed your video Ok so my list: 1. Magnolia 2. Phantom Thread 3. Boogie Nights 4. There will be Blood 5. Hard Eight 6. Licorice Pizza 7. Punch drunk love 8. The Master 9. Inherent Vice

Tenet was very easy to understand. They literally take the time to have like 4 separate characters explain it to you in great detail.
