They were still releasing games for PS1 because outside the united states particularly, South America ,still had a market of people having PS1 consoles. It’s why the PS2 lasted so long as well.
Same with us here in Azania (South Africa) PS2 is still relevant to this day even though consoles like the PS3, 4 and 5 have been released. The PS2 library is still diverse than the latest consoles
Woow 💯💯 i never knew that. Glad to see/know other parts of the world had a deep appreciation and difference of game systems they had that werent the newer ones or etc.
I've recently gone back to the PS1 NASCAR titles. The same thing happened for that series since NASCAR Thunder 2002 - Thunder 2004 were identical with the exception of the rosters. They're still really fun, and I have a lot of appreciation for them.
I have two theories: the first one is that older consoles are huge in foreign countries, especially South America for a number of reasons. Could be EA doing a ‘two-for-one’ by releasing an English copy. The second is that was the era of the tricking out your SUV with a game console, and using a PS1 was a cheap way to do it. My friend did it, so it could have been to appeal to that audience and move a few thousand copies.
You're probably not wrong. I'm South American and yes we received the latest ports of sports games to both PSX and PS2... EA sold the a PS2 port of FIFA here until 2013, what is crazy when you think about.
I remember the PS1 version of FIFA 2005 being the same as 2004 and I think 2003 as well but I don't know about 02. It did make sense back then, at least.
Glad you been producing some solid content over the past couple of weeks. Thanks for all the insights on these games! Very informative and solid opinions.
I bought Madden 2005 for the PS1 a couple months ago for five dollars. I thought the same thing wow that’s a late PS1 title. I tried to mention it to a couple of my friends but they didn’t really care. I’m glad someone else appreciates odd games.
Madden NFL 2002 Was Also The Last Game On The N64... The Only Time That It Was Released On PS1, PS2, Xbox, Nintendo GameCube, And Nintendo 64 In 2001!!
If anyone in 2001 - 2008 would of told you that Madden post 2020 would not have near the depth, features or fun as these games, you would of thought they were insane!!
IMO, the last couple iterations of Madden on the PS1 (from 2000 to 2005) were so much fun to play! You have to understand the context; the PS1 Maddens up to this point (97 to 99) were also good, but gameplay was slow and plodding (plus running the ball was a nightmare) Madden 2000 was lightning fast; you felt like you could break a big plau every time. Graphically, players were accurately scaled with different player models But my real favorite part of these was the Madden Challenges. You would earn tokens for completing certain in-game tasks, then use those tokens to buy cards. These cards would boost player stats, have in-game rule changes/glitches, unlock stadiums, fantasy teams, ALL-MADDEN teams, and every Super Bowl winning team from 1980 onwards. Plus, you could also unlock 50 NFL Greats to do into the in-game roster or franchise mode. Did I mention this was all WITHOUT microtransactions?? The gameplay was great, replay value is high, and i always go back to these games! Love the video!
I could be wrong.. but PS1 Madden 05 using PS2 graphics on the intro was the beginning of EA and their great deception going forward with their so called "simulation" Football games...
Oh that's interesting I remember I had the PS2 when I got madden 01. I didn't realize they made so many more ports of the game for the PS1 although now it turns out didn't require much effort
I remember playing NASCAR Thunder 2002 on the PS1, and although it didn't have the exact same intro of the PS2 game, like in Madden 2002, it did have gameplay of the PS2 version of Thunder.
Madden 02 for the PS1 is when I learned the difference in graphics and gameplay between the PS1 and PS2. I was disappointed and misled by the intro on the PS1 version.
1:54 I actually own Madden NFL 2001 on the Nintendo 64 and have played it on original N64 hardware, and I was stunned when I first saw the Main Menu of Madden NFL 2005 (PS1) in this video since it was the first time I saw it. It is exactly the same as in Madden NFL 2001 (N64), and it is the same as that year's PS1 version too (even the game's overall UI is the same as Madden NFL 2001's was on the N64). I legit didn't anticipate this. Just when I thought Madden NFL 2002 (N64) was the only time EA made a roster update on a Fifth Gen version of a 2000s Madden game, apparently I completely glossed over the PS1 versions of Maddens 2003, 2004 and 2005.
The truth about this is once the new consoles come out, they don’t care about the previous console. That’s really madden 2000 gameplay with 02’ presentation and 05’ rosters lmao.
I saw you mention that you hadn’t played Madden on the PS1 much, but this looks very similar to Madden 2000, which was pretty much just built on the bones of 98, which is probably the gold standard of the PS1 games
There's a guy I worked with in Iowa City who started out in an office inside Kinnick Stadium selling roster updates for sports games on memory cards over the internet on a (now defunct) site called GameRosters. The especially popular mods were ones that plugged players' names and stats into NCAA games instead of the generic player names that college sports games had to use for legal reasons.
You should try out Madden 13 for the PS Vita, I think it was a very solid handheld version of madden that had some very interesting features with how the rear touchpad and motion controls worked on the vita, even with the dumpster fire of a game 13 was, I loved playing it on long car rides as a kid
I didn’t even know this Madden had a create a team 😂. This game really does look solid for the PS1. Another Madden you show make a video on is the last Madden on the Wii (Madden 13). It has a surprisingly fun franchise mode, 5v5 and some other cool features.
The "Great Games" (reliving historic moments) was something NFL Quarterback Club for the Sega Genesis had. And because it came out in the 90s, the game also had the old Pro Bowl QB Skills Challenge, which was both fun as Hell, while also being hilarious at times. Now, I *THINK* the N64 version, "QB Club 2000" also had historic moments, but the game was so annoying to play (completing a pass was impossible), that I literally cannot remember because I probably never tried more than one or two. Compared to the Genesis version, where I played it to death, completed every mode & every one of the near 30 historical moments (Even the Pro Bowl team ones).
If you're going to emulate this game you have to use epsxe, the pcsx and duckstation emulators have that issue where the safety and ppl on the back of the screen disappear
To be fair, the PC version of Madden 2002 is slightly different and unique (lacking customization seen in the console versions as well) compared to the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube versions as well. Not to mention the cheat code “GOLDENGOD” unlocked everything that’s locked behind the card system that the console versions have. I do recall playing the copy I got from Christmas ‘01 until I completely killed the disc. I got a second copy around my birthday in ‘02, which I played that all the way until early ‘05 and killed the disc once more :(
I understand not letting us draw custom routes like old Madden games like 07 esp online but they should absolutely allow you to create formations and plays using routes that are already in the game for franchise mode.
The only problem with emulating these older Madden games is that players and refs who are up field will glitch in and out, leaving only their shadows until the camera moves closer to them. This is a major issue in the passing game whether on offense or defense. I've tried to mess with the settings on numerous emulators but have yet to find a solution to this problem. It seems that playing on original hardware or ps3 is the only solution.
If you're okay with running it with software emulation, then I don't think you will run into this issue (I've tested it on Madden 2000 and NCAA Football 2001). It's not the most ideal of solutions but it's better than nothing.
yeah, I am using duckstation and going thru this now. I am testing every graphical setting to see if some make any difference. Its such a bummer. I even notice the issue using software renderer as some mention, plus software makes the game look dreadful. You can even see the issue in this video. Hopefully an update fixes it at somepoint. If anyone has a fix or setting to minimize please respond. thanks.
If I remember correctly FIFA 2005 was the last game released on PSX. EA Sports hold's the title of "last release" on PS2 (FIFA 14, which is also [I believe] only game playable on every PlayStation, minus PSX. That being said in some regions ProEvo 2014 may be the last release) and for PS3/X360 with FIFA 19 (at the very least last physical release). I wouldn't be surprised if the last game released for PS4/Xbone will be FI... EA Sports Football Club.
Crazy thing is, if you look at ncaa football 08-11 on the ps2 they were largely just copy paste roster updates since the game had moved on to ps3/360. I think these companies know there’s a market that will likely never upgrade their consoles and they make these games until the consoles totally become irrelevant. You figure 2004 was 2 years before the ps3 came out just like 2010 was 3 years before the ps4 came out.
So weird! Hard to believe a PS1 game was coming out in 2004. Madden 2005 for GameCube is what I had at the time along with NFL 2K5 for PS2. Both are GOATS.
they not the same, aint no stick on madden 05 on the PS one, i remember taking it back to kmart to get the PS2 version, then getting mad that helmets didnt come off on the PS2 madden 05
I grew up really poor; so I was playing madden 04, gameday 05, and fifa 04 on PS1 as an early teen. Memories.
Me too. I also grew up with all PS1 Sports games. Cant belive they have far more gameplay depth and memories than even PS5 Sports games.

Idk they were being made for ps1
Crazy to think this very late PS1 game has more customization features compared to the latest maddens
That’s sad. 😢
Agreed!
Ask this question how is a ps1 game capable of more to do than a ps5? A ps5???
2k needs to get the license to Madden, but not kill off Madden for competition.
There was more competition thats why madden has no comp nowadays
it's so crazy to think the Playstation will be 30 years old next year

This is important, because a lot of those inexpensive handheld emulators can do PSX but aren't capable of anything more powerful.
