  • In my opinion the most sensuous (and sensual) performance of this concerto ever recorded!
Played by Lydia Mordkovitch with the BBC Philharmonic, conducted by Vassily Sinaisky.

Like first light at dawn, this concerto opens our eyes to new promise and all the wonders of nature. Evocative of belief in the “beyond” and powers beyond observation, these piece tugs heart strings, pulls at the nostalgic, and wakens dormant loves, lives and wonders !

All the birds pay tribute to me
for today I wed a goddess.
And now we stand by the lake in crimson blossom
in flowing tears of joy, with rapture and fear,
    burning in amorous conflagration.

I heard a local composer mentioniong Szymanofski's name, and discovered this. I had no idea that something of other later romantics than Richard Strausss could thrill me as much as this has done. Not strictly tonal, not atonal, but simply delicious..

Thank you for posting this. I'll be privileged to hear it live in a few days with Christian Tetzlaff at the violin. It's an exquisite piece of music, and this performance is magical and pure at the same time. Great album art, too!

Thanks for the upload. As I discover more and more lesser know music, thanks mainly to Y.T., I realize that my tastes have developed towards the early to middle 20thc. in favour of much of the 19th c. Berlioz still remains one of my top preferences but when it comes to violin concertos (not my strongest point admittedly) the 19th c classics are now sounding just a bit too "sweet"to my ears. Maybe that's what development and education is all about?

These are the three beginnings of the three movements, I guess.

This concerto is not divided into movements. There are five so called "phases" but generally it's one movement concerto

namac34- Thank God for these "lesser known" musicians. Any of Szymanowski's violin concertos with Oistrakh performing?
