    Allysia,
I truly am praying for you to get your 80% or above! I adore your excitement and so I am truly rooting for you for the very best. It is certainly bussy being a Mom- Congratulations!
I really enjoyed this video and I will watch it again, so it is going in my "Special" folder as you introduced me to new composers and new works to which to aspire. So I am going to learn the F# Scale, chords and Arpeggios and begin to play piano in the key if F#:)
Thank you for sharing and please keep us posted on your progress-I would love to hear your pieces ad would enjoy history and analysis videos on the "new-lesser known" composers.
    Best:)

Hi Allysia! My name is Grace and I'm 28.
I got back to Piano 2 years ago, and I've just started teaching and I'm going to take my ABRSM grade 8 in year 2020! I relate a lot to you all-round -- the busy life, the 'I have so many things to do' (thankfully I don't have to afford the distraction of taking care of a child just yet) and this is so inspiring to watch. Thank you so much for the video to show you that you can go for anything if you want it!
My teacher and I also worked on Beethoven op. 2/1 (yes that one you had in F minor) to prepare me for exams! I only did 1 movement.
I also did the famous C minor from WTC book 1 by myself before I decide to start lessons again.
For my ABRSM A-list I also picked a Prelude and Fugue -- there's easier pieces in that list, but I decided I wouldn't be very happy with myself I didn't properly learn a Prelude and Fugue. This year's syllabus is A minor from WTC book 2.
I'm probably doing a Mozart Sonata for my List B, it's sounds so simple but it's so hard. I find that's true with most of my rep nowadays. XD
I'm not settled on List C, but that's all I have for now.
Technicals are ok for me. But the aurals etc I'll have to prepare more in the future. My teacher is preparing me with a lot of rep, I feel slightly overwhelmed, haha.
Hope you have a nice day, cheers from Malaysia! Please let us know how you do and keep us updated hehe

Hi Allysia, I hope you do well on your re-do of your level 10 examination. However, you mentioned in your video that you only need to re-do the repertoire portion of your exam because you did well on the technical requirements portion back in 2015. Are you doing a supplemental exam for the repertoire & then adding that new mark from your 2020 exam to the technical requirements mark from your 2015 exam? Because I had read in the RCM syllabuses for piano and voice that any supplemental exams taken must be done within 2 years from the original date of the practical exam, and your last practical exam was 4 years ago. If you do this exam over again, you might need to either do the ENTIRE exam over again; technical requirements and repertoire either in 1 full all-in-one level 10 examination or in 2 separate level 10 split exams.

Good luck man... I did RCM 10 in 1994 and most of what I remember was how ridiculous the tech requirements are. I remember doing Chopin 9/1, Mozart 332 and the C major Fugue and the 25/2 Etude. I actually felt ARCT was easy in comparison because you dont have to spent 1/2 an hour trying to do scales and blocked legatos. BTW while nothing is easy here but always felt that Beethoven 2/1 is significant easier, 10/1 is bit hard at 10, more like ARCT (listed as Diploma level for ABRSM). Some of the other ones listed at RCM 10 like 10/2 and the Pastoral are pretty treacherous as well. I find it hard when you are under the gun to get over 75 to try very challenging stuff.

    • @AccordionandViolinlife
      @AccordionandViolinlife 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@annelieetsebeth1830 A second instrument sometimes reinforces the first. But it's always better to learn one instrument good rather than two just 'so-so'. I don't know where your little town is, but if you play the piano, then you already have theory knowledge and a good foundation in music, so you might consider taking some online lessons for the cello. Of course nothing is like a real live teacher but it is at least something and there are some pretty good teachers here on TH-cam.

@@AccordionandViolinlife I live in South Africa and we have many piano teachers in my town but not one who teaches cello, it's sad! I'm busy with grade 6 piano at the moment and it's getting pretty intense now when it comes to the time invested, so I think I'll wait until I've finished my diploma (a few years from now) before starting cello. I've considered online lessons but for some reason don't think it will work well for cello. Luckily I still have some years ahead of me before I have to make that decision. :)

Most people in California tend to do the MTAC (Music Teacher's Association of CA), which I am wondering if they are similar somehow? The books for RCM are also way more expensive so a lot of my students are turns off by it. Do you have any suggestions for a fellow piano teacher? I just had my exam this spring and it didn’t feel that great because I felt like I had lost connection with one piece, and with one I didn’t really connect in the first place. Which is why I now want to play only music that touches me. Also I have a question. Could you make a video on how to keep on practicing when your lessons are over? How to keep the routine and get things done even when you don’t have that weekly push of motivation from a teacher to practice?

Hi Allysia, congratulations on returning to taking piano lessons and exams. I think you are doing the right thing. Thanks for is warning video. Some people cautioned me when I was working on my grade 6. Saying that I must not feel I should rush into taking it. I'm surprised you have so many pieces to prepare. Can you please answer some questions?
What does RCM stand for? Is it Royal College of Music? I think you said once it's one of the exam choices in Canada.
Could you give an idea of what grade it compares to for the ABRSM?
Also, how many grades are there in the RCM system?
For ABRSM there are 8. By the way, I passed my ABRSM grade 6 practical in March. I'm working on my grade 7 and will probably take it around December; I am also getting ready to start teaching piano for the first time. My piano teacher has asked me to fill in for her in June to help a grade 1 student. I'm really looking forward to it and start next Saturday! 😊

    • @ahinds100

RCM stands for The Royal Conservatory of Music. RCM is a Canadian system offering examinations in many instruments including voice (singing), and speech arts & drama. The levels are from level 1 to 10 for most instruments, and some of the instruments have a preparatory level. After level 10, there is an ARCT diploma for all instruments /disciplines, and piano students can take the LRCM licentiate if they pass ARCT. As far as comparison to ABRSM, RCM is (I feel) more comprehensive than ABRSM because RCM requires that exam candidates do etudes in addition to the repertoire whereas ABRSM doesn't require etudes. RCM gives marks for memorization of pieces, and ABRSM doesn't have memory requirements. RCM also requires more pieces and technical requirements than ABRSM, and RCM theory exams are a requirement in order to receive the certificates for RCM practical exams for levels 5 and up. However, ABRSM is still a pretty good system, as are the other international exam boards based on what I've seen in their syllabuses.

@@DonnaHarrisMusicStudio You're welcome. RCM is indeed very comprehensive and has more requirements than ABRSM, but I think all of the exam boards that I have taken a look at are pretty good (ABRSM, Trinity Guildhall, AMEB, etc). We also have Conservatory Canada as another examination board here in Canada, and CC is similar to RCM as far as having 10 lessons and then a diploma level. However, I feel that Conservatory Canada is even more comprehensive & has more requirements than RCM based on what I read in the CC syllabus. I'm a couple of years older than Allysia & I have taken RCM exams in piano, voice (singing), and theory, from my childhood and through to adulthood. The highest levels I currently have are level 10 voice, level 8 piano, & I am working on level 10 piano right now. I decided to split the level 10 piano exam instead of doing it all in one go, and I did the repertoire portion of the exam (5 pieces) a few days ago, and hopefully if I pass, I'll do the technical requirements half of the exam (2 etudes, sight reading, ear tests, scale work, etc.) in a few months. Currently waiting on my results! Once someone has the RCM level 8 certificate, they are qualified to teach private lessons. I teach singing and piano part-time.

@@DonnaHarrisMusicStudio I find teaching part-time to be lots of fun, and I hope you enjoy teaching as well! Have you started teaching yet? I hope you do well in your upcoming ABRSM exams! I am actually planning on traveling next year for a few days from the Greater Toronto Area where I live to the other side of Canada in British Columbia to take the ABRSM ARSM diploma exam for singing. ABRSM exams are only offered in B.C. in Canada, whereas RCM exams & CC exams are offered nationwide. I really like the ARSM diploma requirements, & I'm using my RCM level 9 voice exam mark to qualify for it because that's the ABRSM requirement. Based on my RCM level 10 mark, I'm eligible to do the RCM ARCT exam for singing, but I've decided to try for the ABRSM diploma right now. Good luck to you!

This is a question for Allysia or anyone who has ever taken RCM examinations. My kids don't have access to an acoustic piano. Is it possible to perform well at an RCM exam if you have only practiced on a digital piano? Is there too much difference between the two?

Such a good and pertinent question, especially now - I can't believe no one has answered. In case you're wondering, and for anyone else who is interested to know, Royal Conservatory of Music does allow practical exams to be conducted on digital pianos. The requirement is that the instrument must have a minimum of 76 touch-weighted keys with a recognizable piano sound. Of course, most digital pianos have 88 keys and easily meet this requirement. Since, yes, there is a difference between instruments, exams at an RCM level 9 or higher need to be done on an acoustic piano and not a digital. Hope this helps!

Alyssa......how were u able to teach for years with grade 8 level RCM? I recall in another video you discussed your teaching at a very young age, about 20? and I thought you indicated you had about grade 8. I have been led to believe that to teach with RCM, you have to have your grade 20 and your ARCT teaching designation? Or, can one teach beginners with less than that????? Am I wrong in thinking this? Pls let me know because I am considering teaching and I have grade 9

Not sure of exactly what she did but I'm sure you can teach private lessons without grade 10 or ARCT, only RCM connected schools would probably require it. I once had a piano teacher who was primarily a violinist so...

    Advice: don't do popular classical
Me: playing Mozart 545 Sonata in C
I love overplayed classical for some reason which is why I chose it but yeah doesn't come without risk.

I have just started studying for my RCM grade 10 exam as well! I struggle more with the technical side than repertoire, so that will be fun to prepare. I've prepared a couple of the rep pieces, Beethoven Sonata in F minor, and Ginastera Danzas Argentinas movements 1 and 2 (I learned movement 3 as well to perform for a recital; very fun piece you should look into!) I am also a mom to a 15 month-old, and another one on the way, so I understand how hard it is to practice! Fortunately I have a wonderful teacher as well.

Oh, man! Sorta reminds me of "looking forward" to the California Bar Exam a zillion years ago. Apart from your great site(s) and videos, you are such a super likeable person, if you simply go in there and smile coyly and bat your eyes, you'll probably get at least an 80. And, at the very end, make sure you don't forget to jam your butt down on the bass end of the keyboard just like Jarrod Radnich did in his Pirates of the Carribean video (may not seem important, but, you'll really make an impression on the examiner. You want to stand out a little from the usual examinees, right?). Keith/Texas.
