Some Bm fans are particularly protective of them likely because of the vitriolic hatred thrown at them over the years, but especially in their first few years. When the vid "Gimme Choco" went viral over 10 years ago now, it earned them a spot at the Sonisphere festival in the UK. Many metal fans were extremely pissed at this decision, and many of them threatened a piss bottle barrage at the girls while they played on stage. They were just kids, 14/15/16 years old then, and certainly didn't deserve this noise. Since then, the joke of the elitists..."They're not metal" "Just a fad" etc. Even disgusting p3dophelic commentary. This is why some fans are over protective. The "fad" has lasted 14 years now....and they appear to be more popular than ever now, and will be headlining some rock/metal festivals very soon. Their music is undeniably metal. It does not fit in any other genre. Yes, they have some pop-like choruses, but the core is metal...they actually have some pretty heavy songs, heavier than a lot of "accepted" metal bands. FTR I was not a fan back then, I thought they were a fad and wished for them to disappear....though somewhere along the way, i became a fan.
Indeed, this is true. They have garnered a lot of hate over the years, but they kept pushing forward and believing in themselves, working tirelessly, until people started to realize that they are more than what the naysayers would have you believe. Now they have some of the biggest metal icons in the biz acknowledging them. Corey Taylor is a big fan now after his son introduced them to him. They've played at a lot of the same shows over the years. There's even footage of Babymetal rocking out to Slipknot behind the stage. Su-metal said in an interview that she wants to do a collaboration with slipknot. Now coming up soon Babymetal and Slipknot are going to be touring in Brazil and Mexico. There's a very real possibility that a collab may happen.
We didn't know they came under so much fire when they started though I can totally see that happening with their gimmick. We don't aim to trash any band we react to, just weren't fans of the song. Thanks for the info. /Andrei
Babymetal has songs that are more pop and some that are more metal, thats why i would definetly recommend Rondo of Nightmare live with Mischiefs of Metal Gods Intro, BMC and Megitsune. From their newer stuff Metal Kingdom is really good. Hope you like it! :D
I bet nobody (if they wanted you to like them) who asked you to react to BABYMETAL suggested 'Gimme Chocolate' - and definitely not the official video. This is a song where the contrast between the thrash metal instrumentals and their sweet voices is (deliberately) more exaggerated than in pretty much every other song they do. They were aged 16 and 14 and the audio is from the studio (and the studio recordings over-process and compress the vocals), they were always better live ... also this was filmed over 10 years ago. You never saw the guitarist doing the solo because, not only was this the studio audio, the guitarist wasn't there - this was before they had the budget for the live band to play every show (although they did come on for the encores in this one) who have supported them in all live shows since 2014. If you want to see and hear it live with the live band watch the performance on the Steven Colbert show. BABYMETAL mainstream ... not really, but they are getting towards the top of the bill at all the biggest metal festivals. When they started they had no budget, wore borrowed clothes and played for free in shopping malls because they had to find an audience that nobody believed would exist since what they were doing was completely untried and untested. They are popular now because they do things nobody else does and nobody else did before them. They are original, innovative and unique ... they even pioneered their own new metal sub-genre - and no we all know it won't appeal to everybody, but they have about 70 songs now and only one of them is 'Gimme Chocolate' (and that is one of the most divisive). More importantly they are popular because the songs are all quality (even if someone doesn't like the sound, they are well written), each song is different to the last, they are passionate about what they do and about providing the best entertainment and the best value for money, they are very talented (you haven't heard Su-metal singing live in a song that shows off her range and versatility) and they put on the best live shows. Should you do more BABYMETAL ... that's up to you. You may never get over the things you didn't like about this one and I'm not going to try and persuade you. If you do, make sure it is live and don't expect to hear Gimme Chocolate Mk2.
We picked this song because it's also the one covered by Hellscore, we figured a it's a good time to give them a shot. Other choices may have been better indeed, had it been a solo react. Thanks for the feedback. When it comes to other songs I do remember liking a live version for "Road to Resistance" some time back. So I'm not discarding them, but for the most part, probably won't be my thing!
@@thewindmillfullovcorpses Yes I guessed why you picked the song, I'm sure you will have had requests for ones you would have liked better (or that stood a better chance at least). Maybe even a real live version of 'Gimme Chocolate' would have worked better ... maybe not. 'Road of Resistance' live in Japan will have been what you saw. That was from early 2015. There is a newer version live at the PIA Arena in 2023 you might appreciate as well ... actually I think you might appreciate any live song from the PIA Arena, they were great shows and the girls are all grown up now - 'Divine Attack' (Su-metal wrote the lyrics for that one), 'Mirror Mirror', Monochrome' - all good examples.
If you listen to SU-METAL's voice with an open mind, you may experience a pure joy of listening to music that you have never experienced before in your heart. This opportunity is available to all music lovers.
"I don't feel it works" - Some random guy on TH-cam, 2024. Meanwhile, BABYMETAL continues selling out venues all over the world since their first world tour back in 2014 after being formed 14 years ago in 2010. Good job!
The random guy on TH-cam has no desire to prevent Babymetal's success. The random guy on TH-cam had requests to check out the band. The random guy on TH-cam wasn't gonna fake a positive opinion. No hate intended.
@@thewindmillfullovcorpses I (and probably a lot of other people) don't have a problem with you guys not digging the song. You can not enjoy the song without being disrespectful though. I think the comment that went over the line was saying it is offensive and that they are only popular because it is shocking, not because they make good music. I think that is going to far based on only one song. I will say that I agree about you guys about the verses being too over the top, but I still think as a whole the song blends well enough, especially the main singer Su. Definitely wouldn't consider this one of my top songs for them though. As others have said, I think you guys might enjoy some of their more recent stuff since they are a bit older now.
@@thewindmillfullovcorpsesuna opinión puede estar errada si hablamos de algo tangible como el "éxito", especialmente si hay datos/estadísticas de por medio 🤔
@@Segmented They didn't say they are only popular because of the shock factor, they said it's their main appeal. Which is true, at least when you discover them. That's how it went for me, I got hooked on the contrast and quickly enjoyed the music and singing for themselves.
Tbh you probably picked out about the worst introduction to these girls possible (although the track I think is good once you get to know what you're listening to) - this is a very early track and they're a good 10 years older now and have been going 14 years. They are actually quite astonishing and certainly unique, and every track sounds VERY different - well worth checking out live.
That is certainly a possibility. We don't know much about them. But tbh this song is along the lines of what I expected. We might try another from them but no promises. /Andrei
Welcome to Babymetal! Your reaction to this particular video is understandable, but please give them a chance! Here's a couple of bullet points to help: *1).* Don't like "too cutsie"? Check out their recent content. This video is 2013, they are 14/16 here. Today, they're in their mid-20s and they have shed the child-like cutsiness for a more mature feel. *2).* Gimme Chocolate was purposely design for the shock factor. But, most other Babymetal songs blends pop/metal much better, especially their recent ones. That's why I would NEVER suggest this song as the entry into Babymetal for a classic metal fan, even though it's their "most popular" song. In a way, it does them a major dis-service. *3).* Babymetal is somewhat "main stream" today now that they are established, but I think more accurately, they just created their own "stream" somwhere in between "the main stream" and "the underground", lol. *4).* Musicians/band: This video was Babymetal when they just got big in Japan, and unknown internationally. They couldn't yet afford a live band fully at that time, so yes, pop act singing over metal music on track in this video (with studio audio over the video here). The following year (2014), they strictly use their live band (Kami Band) for all live performances. These guys are some of the best metal musicians around. Suggestions: If you look up the song and venue, you'll get full live video and live audio. *Road of Resistance (Pia Arena MM 2023):* Power metal battle anthem. Herman Li + Sam Totman of Dragonforce helped with guitar parts for studio track. *Metali (Official Live):* A fun and groovy festival song, and a recent late 2023 release. Ft. Tom Morello on guitar solos. *Rondo of Nightmare (Budokan 2014):* Full Kami Band solo intro + dark AF song. 0% chocolate, 100% gloom. *Tales of the Destinies (Tokyo Dom 2016):* So prog Mike Portnoy himself gave this song his personal thumbs up. *Ijime, Dame, Zettai (Sonisphere UK 2014):* Their 1st major international stage appearance, raw Babymetal, no stage production (because it's a festival). Just the gals and the Kami Band infront of 50K confused UK metal heads. I'm not saying you need to like Babymetal, but I hope you check them out more! 🤘🦊
Read my comment. They have no intrest in them or probably ever will. They are trolling for effect. I don't want to see nice, resonable people like yourself wasting your time.
1) It is often the case that I tend to like band's newer material so probably a good idea! 2) Sounds a bit like Nightwish with "Sleeping Sun" or Metallica with "Nothing Else Matters", sometimes unrepresentative songs steal the spotlight. Thanks for the feedback, will check out some newer stuff although probably not on camera cos this video was not really well received 😄
@@thewindmillfullovcorpses Sure, hope you enjoy it! Babymetal is definitely not your classic metal, but to me, they’ve been a breath of fresh air. Hope you check’em out here or on your own! 🤘🦊

"Ratatata" goes harder than "Gimme Chocolate" because they wanted to do something in the style of Electric Callboy, which turned into the collab. I don't know how old they were in this video, but it's from ~10 years ago. They're in their mid-20s now. The Babymetal fans can provide their exact birthdays, Zodiac signs, favorite foods, etc. 😁
@@thewindmillfullovcorpses Ironically, your points about the shock factor & the genres not meshing are similar to your initial thoughts about Electric Callboy. I'm not a fan of "Gimme Chocolate" either, but they've released many other tracks over the past decade+, including quite a few that I actually do like. Most of their recent collaborations are very good as well. Dooo eeeet!
I think you should check out the babymetal song Rondo of Nightmare live at budokan black night with mischief of metal gods intro. It’s ALOT more metal than this and has changed peoples minds on the band many times.
I’d also like to add that this song (Gimme Chocolate) was written when they were still a part of the Idol J-pop group, “Sakura Gakuin.” A school themed idol group that consisted of multiple different themed sub-groups/clubs. Babymetal was the “Heavy music club” and wasn’t originally intended to be its own thing. But once they started to perform live they realized that they were on to something. Originally they didn’t have a real live band because as I said before they were a pop idol group and plus they didn’t have the funding to hire musicians. The skeleton clothed people in the video were just pretending to play in order to give the appearance of a real band. Eventually they added the “Kami Band.” World class musicians from the Japanese metal underground. Absolute beasts. This is when Babymetal really started to become a real band and blow peoples mind.
I can definitely see them coming from a J-pop background and integrating metal components. Most metal bands that combine with other genres put the other genre on top of metal. Also explains why it's so coreographed! Will consider Rondo of Nightmare!
@@thewindmillfullovcorpses Thank you. One more thing. Rondo of Nightmare is a solo song for Su-Metal (the lead vocalist.) At the time of the budokan black night concert in 2014, the three girls were 16, 14 and 14. Su-metal being the oldest. Because they were so young I believe they were essentially given breaks by having a few solo songs for Su-metal and some duo songs for Moametal and Yuimetal. It’s said that while Su-metal was performing Rondo of Nightmare the other two girls were doing homework.
The most recent rendition Headbangerrrr!! is actually pretty tight and worth your attention, especially since the new member (Momometal) actually growls when she gets her turn on main vocals. Babymetal have really evolved out of the pop sound and have two albums that are more metal sounding. They also have tons of features on those albums, like Joakim from Sabaton on Oh! Majinai, Alissa from Arch Enemy on Distortion, fucking Tom Morello on METAL! and others. I'm also biased and saw them live a year or two ago. Their performance on stage fucking rips. More physicality and performance ability than a lot of other bands in the industry.
If you add growl to this it would probably sound somewhere closer to Hanabie, which we did enjoy more. The scream voice could bridge the jarring gap between the childish vocals and the instrumentation. Big thank!
@@thewindmillfullovcorpses Momometal only joined last year and for now she only growls now and then, but they've publicly said they intend to use her growls more in the future. Funny thing though, the most recent rendition nof Headbanger (which is called Momobanger) has the most "regular" singing from Momo of any Babymetal song she's in and... she's the one with the cutest singing style of all members. XD Sooo... Although you may enjoy her growls, I'm not exactly sure you'll enjoy her regular singing. X) Maybe try the original Headbanger first? Live though, not the mv.
Before anyone gets irritated at some of their ignorant comments. They are trolling. Probably wilfully ignorant of Babymetal, but they know more about them than they are pretending to here. Their own laughs at the elitist and provocative things they said gave it away. As did the now deleted reply where they say as much, before they did a 180 and got annoyed at me for letting people know they were trolling, and the comment got deleted, and people thought i was just attacking them without context, which is gaslighting LOL. Make of their reaction whatever you want it to be. Just don't take it too seriously either way. That's all i'm trying to say.
Couple of people actually made arguments that would make me curious to check out the band further. Then there's the likes of you doing everything they can to make sure I never wanna feature this band or hear of them again. Some great loyal fan behaviour there. I hope the reasonable voices in your fandom prevail.
Pretty sure you're the troll as i've seen you spamming nonsense in the comments. If they don't like the band, it's fine, they are entitled to their own opinions. Them not liking the band shouldn't affect you in any way. I can understand why they came to the conclusion that they did based on this song. It throws a lot of people off because of how out there it is.
@@Thefoxgod9 Did you not read their first reply on here? (now deleted i believe) they literally said they were being elitists as a joke. (Not judging just surprise) you MUST hear BMTH ft Babymetal song then, that is a song really GOD, and AGAIN, should hear Broken by the Scream, songs like "Ki-RA-I" and "Sayonara Happy Birthday" live or studio no matter what, I loved this double reaction, keep it up guys
Nah we really didn't hear it before. Most of our stuff is first time react, if something isn't first time react, we say that in the video. Didn't know they worked with BMTH and actually not very familiar with BMTH either.
I know that guys, give a chance to some of these bands, famous and unkowned, no even for reacting, for yourselves, if you want to hear something different or unusual, do it, worth it a lot
They work because they are genuine, & make actual nice music with a lot of attitude. They are not different from traditional bands like Galneryus in this sense. You can say it's trash, it's childsh, it's a no effort success but the prejudice of Metalheads blinds everything of good so is it really reliable as the word of a fan? Not that different if you think about it. Yes they are children that's why their voices sounds like... A children, Michael Jackson was also a children by the way, yes they dance & don't play instruments, every other band does that, yes they don't write most of their songs, they interpret & deliver them.
We did not say they're not genuine. We did not say it's trash but that the song uses a thrash metal groundwork. We did not say the music is childish, just asked if they were underage. We do not have a problem that they dance, we actually commended them on the effort for the choreography. We don't have a problem that they don't play instruments. More power to them, this song is just not our thing very much. /Andrei
Random comment from Reddit that I liked: Daamn, people in the comments write like kpop fans do. What doesn't do it for me is the cute voices (and dancing choreographies). I wonder whether they play their own instruments, btw. I've tried to listen to Babymetal, but it's just not my type of metal fusion. It still looks more like a product than anything. But I'm glad they get the attention, they must work really hard.
All of the Babymetal girls were practically born at a music and dance school. They have known musical theory since childhood (in addition, this learning is present in the school curriculum in Japan). To say that Babymetal vocalist Su is not a musician is incorrect. She has sung on every album and at every heavy and thrash metal festival for over a decade. Suppose: saying that Ozzy, Dio, Rob Halford, Bruce Dickinson "aren't musicians because they only sing, shake their head and don't play instruments" wouldn't make sense. I suggest listening to Babymetal (Brand New Day song) with featuring Polyphia (The musicians in this band are great and they didn't refuse to play with Babymetal).and the song itself too, called Tales of Destinies, with Kamiband (the BM band) whose instrumental is quite complex.
@@marcoskazu_ Where did I say they're not musicians? At least they sing, that makes them singers. What I don't get is the product. But it seems fans get it, so good for you all. Wish them the best anyways!
Kind of funny to hear that you never wanted to do babymetal reactions because they are too "mainstream". Meanwhile you are perfectly okay with doing Bad Omens for example who are WAY more popular and mainstream than babymetal:D But anyway thanks for the reaction and babymetal sure isn't for everyone so no harm done if you don't like it. To answer one of your questions. Yes the girls were underage in this video you watched. But it's also a 10 years old video so the girls or women now are in their mid twenties currently. So really doubt the "shock value" is the only thing that keeps them popular like you suggested because no one can go on being popular on shock value alone for almost 15 years now (babymetal started in 2010)
Well we very well might be wrong about why they're popular. It was just the first sense we got.It is a first time reaction after all. We don't know their history. Also the elitism/mainstream comment was a joke. We even reacted to Iron Maiden and Rammstein! /Andrei

Don't listen to the haters, it's okay if you don't dig Babymetal. It's not to everybody's taste. And you wern't disrespectful. But if you decide to give them another shot, please do record it! I've read many fans recommend songs in which the genres clash less together so I'm very curious to see how you feel about it. My personal recommendation would be Metali live. I've seen this one recommended but studio version and while I do think the mv is awesome, the live version has a little twist to it that you might appreciate it. Another one I havn't seen recommend: BxMxC. It's rap-metal. Su-Metal struggled a lot with this one in practice before releasing it, trying to find her own flow. Now it's one of her favorites to sing! Su's kind of a voice nerd, she loves learning new ways to sing.
I've been watching your channel on and off for a long while and have been patiently waiting for an eventual BM reaction. I guess it finally came but it's unfortunate that this was the song choice and more unfortunate that it put you off the band going forward. Gimme Chocolate is probably the last BM song I'd ever recommend to a metalhead looking for an introduction to the band - it's just way too offputting for way too many reasons. I'd say check out Road of Resistance (Live in Japan 2015) and pretend you never heard Gimme Chocolate lmao. Thanks for the reaction anyways.

Maybe. There's also always the option that it won't be some people's cup of tea. No harm done.
@@thewindmillfullovcorpses That's fair enough.
I was just pointing out facts. 😁
Here's a couple of bullet points to help:
*1).* Don't like "too cutsie"?

We have that one on the requests list as well, maybe we get to it at some point. Big thank!
Maybe try the original Headbanger first?

That is a form of trolling, part satire. is it not? i pointed this out to people, to not get annoyed at the ignorance in their reaction which they were obviously delighting in, and to not take it seriously. Why is that such a bad thing? They have obviously completely flipped the script since i last commented and have deleted the original reply which i based my fair response to at that time.
Where did i say they couldn't have their own opinions or needed them to like anything? I'm not going to beg them to like something. And why is what i say so important to their decision making or to anyone elses?
@@thewindmillfullovcorpses Reasonable? LMFAO, you guys really never heard this before?
/Andrei
Random comment from Reddit that I liked:
Daamn, people in the comments write like kpop fans do.
Well obviously they don't play their own instruments. Pretty much impossible to play guitar or drums while dancing:D
@@Tyyppl well, obviously I meant whether they play their instruments when they record their albums. I got my answer: they don't.

Stop giving any recommendations, they are not music lovers

I've been watching your channel on and off for a long while and have been patiently waiting for an eventual BM reaction. It tends to happen in the comments tho hehe, the Babymetal fandom doesn't seem very tolerant of different opinions.
@@thewindmillfullovcorpses We are very tolerant as a whole in comparison to many other fandoms, most of us know not everybody will jump in feet first and as long as there is no disrespect there is no harm done, but there has been a whole load of lies and misinformation and some real poison vitriol thrown at BABYMETAL over the years ( the girls themselves talk in interviews even now about the criticism they received when they were only 14-15 years old and just trying to work hard and do their best too) so we do tend to be possibly a little over-protective.
