    I’ve made a big upgrade by switching to a enameled cast iron pan. It has all benefits of cast iron but is much easier to clean. This is my new favorite pan to cook and eat out of.

    My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
    Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.

    Congratulations on your new "mini Dutch oven." I have been cooking with enameled cast iron for quite some time and you can get really excellent results using it. Today I made Red Beans and Rice in a 5.5-quart enameled cast iron Dutch Oven. I didn't have red beans, but I had a pound bag of Pinto beans. My sister had given me some ham that I vacuumed sealed several months ago. Add to this water, vegetables (onion, peppers, celery), and a few spices (thyme, rosemary, Cajun seasoning). Honestly, it was really delicious. Three adults ate to bursting and there were still enough leftovers for 5-6 more plates of the stuff. Happy cooking! BTW, you may want to put some sort of barrier between the cover and the pot when storing. Otherwise, you may get some chipping there. I use some folded paper towels to do the job.

    Years ago I had an enameled sauce pan with a lid that double as a frying pan. It was the right size for one person. Or 2 people for some items. It was by that fancy French company sold at Macy’s. I got years & years of good use out of them. A some point in the last 20 years it disappeared. A few years ago I priced replacing it and the prices knocked my socks off. A year or so I bought a small knock-off 8” enameled cast iron skillet to try out because I’ve been worried my nonstick pan might be that teflon kind that might have health issues. While I like it well enough, it never has worked as well as that fancy French kind, plus it didn’t come with a lid and an 8” glass lid doesn’t fit it. So this next year I plan on replacing it with something better that won’t break the bank. Thanks for showing what you went with.

    There is another model of cook top, very similar, that has a control for the inner and out ring of flame separately.
    Two nobs for the one burner.
    This would help with simmering and cooking with small pans.
    The enamel coating solves the problem of wrecking the seasoning of a cast iron with tomato or other acidy sauces.
    My wife ruins the seasoning often.
    We have an enamel dutch oven. I think I’ll look for that pot.
    Thanks.

    Well, you have answered a question for me, and that is cast iron pots and pans. I am looking at them for the durability and have been thinking of cast iron vs, enamel cast iron cookware. A tip on cleaning stainless steel pots or pans is baking soda, wet the area, then putting baking soda into that area, a wet cloth, or wet your fingers rub it onto the area that is needed to be cleaned. Baking soda is an amazing product, clean, bug bits as a paste, settling your tummy, as toothpaste, and many more wonderful things. I enjoy any change of spending time with you. Great Sauce pan!
    Quality cookware contributes to a more enjoyable cooking experience.
    I find the lid works well sitting inside my black steel pan when reheating small meals.
    I would strongly suggest anyone using Teflon cookware to do please some research into the inherent problems with Teflon...and would hope that leads you to tossing all you Teflon in the bin and replacing with a saucepan like this and black steel pan (ie "Matfer Bourgeat Black Steel Round Frying Pan, 10 1/4-Inch" )

  • @captainhappy
    @captainhappy ปีที่แล้ว

    I suggest you build some kind of metal frame guard around your cooking place. That would help you to avoid the pan sliding away from the top of the flame. There might be ready made solutions for your cooking top, but I am sure you can build it also yourself. All it needs is some metal rod/s maybe 5-6 millimeters thick, what you use to make a "barrier" around the top of the cooking top, rods might be bent to your needs and then make some holes for the rods to drop them in place - or figure some other attaching system - when you use the cooking top. Then if the pan or kettle or whatever starts sliding, it hits the surrounding rod before tipping over from the top of the cooking place. It might sound troublesome thing to make, but I can also assure you that all it takes is some serious burning wounds from boiling water and all the effort preventing it starts feeling much smaller (compared to the wounds and it's results)

    • @captainhappy
      @captainhappy ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StaticCamperVan No I did not miss the adjustable feet, having the cooking top level is obviously one important thing. The purpose of the metal frame guard/bumper is to improve your own safety, because even how level the cooking top is, you can bump it yourself, there some kind of additional piece would keep the pan or kettle on its place. Often the safety things come to mind only after accidents have already happened.

    • @StaticCamperVan
      @StaticCamperVan  ปีที่แล้ว

      I can see what you’re thinking about. If I were moving like a boat, then the additional guards would improve things. But being that I don’t drive and cook, the leveling is the critical element.

One is 5.5 qt and the other is 3.5 qt. 35 days after I bought them they were marked down to $49.99 for Black Friday... but I'm not complaining. They may not be Le Creuset but they cook just fine. That said, I try to use wood or plastic utensils, much like I would with a non-stick pan... which I also refuse to use. Why? Well, I used a nice balloon whisk to make gravy and it left lots of metal marks all over the pan. Used some "Pink Stuff" cleaner to get it out... but I'd rather not make more work for myself.

      i live in my van too and i often use my camp stove for heat on cold mornings and cooking of course, my burner is only 10000 btus, i think the extra btus will help a lot

      @user-te7kh6zy7m I don’t recommend using this or any stove for heating. Not only is it incredibly dangerous but these stoves create too much moisture when running.
      I use an Olympian Wave for heat.

    Might be worth it to go to a little metal shop to get some sort of stoppers or frame made to stop the pot sliding off. Seems to me like it could be one of those things where you'd think it's fine and you'll just keep an eye on it until you wind up with bolognese on your mattress 😄
    Question, don't you have issues with the grease/fumes from cooking without an extraction close to the pot or is the maxxair fan enough for that? Is the maxx air fan getting greasy from it?

      Maybe I will remember to adjust the feet on my stove before I start cooking. That would solve the issue.
      I don’t have any problems with fumes. Mostly because I leave both my vents open. If you’re not familiar with my venting system, I have a video explaining it. Venting is extremely important, but almost no one puts enough effort into improving the venting in their vans. th-cam.com/video/bBLgemW4yEA/w-d-xo.html

    Wow! Sweet upgrade Scott =) I've been eyeing the Caraway pans, even though I only want the saucepan, but until I splurge on one, I think I'll check out that pan at my local Freddy's for sure. So...inquiring mind wants to know...what'd you do with the stainless one?? Enjoy your day, stay warm and safe!😊

      Unfortunately my only option was to toss the old pan. I usually gift things I don’t need.

    Will try it! Can the same be said for a cast iron enameled skillet - if there is such a thing?

      Yes, there are cast iron enameled skillets. I prefer carbon steel skillets but there are lots of options out there.
