I've watched several of your videos including this one and I must say that you have really changed the way I think about urbanism, especially in your first video that discusses NIMBYs and YIMBYs. I hope this channel takes off and helps redirect conversations among and between urbanists, planners and elected and non-elected government officials towards where they should👍
Been following you for a while now, appreciating your more informed takes on urban planning and development. Feels like I'm actually learning something as opposed to just being pandered to.
I usually don't comment on TH-cam videos but your channel is absolutely phenomenal, I just went through what you have in this series so far and really loved your approach to making this knowledge accessible with that radical angle. Wishing you the best with growing your channel in the future, and I'll definitely be sharing this around with some friends
You have been helping completely change my views on cities/how we should approach them as leftists. I have always had a deep understanding of the economics of socialism and how they apply in the real world but my understanding of city planning has always been very liberal and I never really thought there was any such thing as radical planning because of how much of what liberal urbanists advocated for has seemed to me like the ideal, that all you need to do is take their ideas for cities and put them into a post capitalist context and call it a day. This has really opened my eyes to a whole new world of planning.
Thank you for another great video! So happy to have found this channel. Was wondering if you could make a video about decolonization through the lens of urban planning?
Great stuff! Watching your channel made me realize how liberal a lot of the mainstream 'urbanism' youtube channels I watch are, which was a bit disheartening. Have you read any Murray Bookchin? Not strictly about city planning but I found his book From Urbanization to Cities to be really helpful in broadening our ideas of what cities have even been historically.
I'm running for my small town planning board vacancy. Do you have any recommendations for learning how to be a more effective radical planner, with no professional planning background? I basically consume all the current content about urban planning, but I'm not really sure how to apply what I've learned effectively in a volunteer town government position.
good luck to you! i think the most radical thing you can do is to listen to the needs of the marginalized people in your community. i made a video about this a couple months ago that might be helpful: Radical Advice for Early Career Planners th-cam.com/video/jjQUlg_cSZc/w-d-xo.html i think at the local level, you’d have the ability to demand that developers provide for the community rather than just suck profit out of it. that should be your most basic modus.
Hey Radical Planning, ive really enjoyed your content providing insight to the barriers and realities of American urban development and its muddy history. It's given me much to consider in its scope. I was wondering if you had any insights you could provide toward why despite similar capitalist incentive from auto manufacturers, urban planning looks so different in places like the netherlands and Japan.
Since Adam Something went completely insane and seems to be in some kind of psychosis (The "How to fix social media" video, largely) I looked around for people talking about that and saw this channel recommended instead, so I unsubbed from him and subbed to you lol. Thanks for not being crazy.
Don't all planning theories rely on external authority to achieve anything? Why single out Equity Planning Theory? Even Rational-Comprehensive Planning theory can be shuttered with the right mayor and city council.
