Thank You so much for posting this. I Saw the Play live in Madrid in 1987 with the same company and It was amazingly outstanding. I was extremely impressed and enjoyed so much and now I enjoy again watching this. Thanks a lot

I never listened this opera. Today I watched on TV an amazing comedy: Fool play and the music ( due to the plot) employed was The Mikado.👏👏👏🌹🌹👏

I am in agreement with Peter Martin,I could follow The Mikado in any language. What I especially like is,Yum Yum is usually a fey,shy and scared part. Here she is (I think) portrayed as a bit of feisty gold digger, and all the better for it.

Couldn't understand a word of it but as I've seen this gem from G&S dozens of times that didn't matter. Good fun and well done! Congratulations on the production and on the filming.

Peter Martin It's a catalan version, I've also seen many versions of the Mikado, and that's the one I like most. Partly because it's un catalan (my language) but I also like its simplicity, the fact that there's no choir and t'he kabuki like makeup... Thank you for your comment!
There's also a catalan version of the pirates of Penzance I want to upload!

I'd like to find it in Italian...I don't know why, but hearing them sing and speak reminded me of Italian.
I am amazed and delighted to find this opera in what seems to be some form of Spanish.
I am glad they kept the melodies for the most part the same as the english version.
Ooo! I wonder if the same is possible in Italian...

Thank you for your comment! This version is sung in Catalan, wich is a romanic language similar yo Spanish and to French and Italian as well. I'm glad you liked it!

Very good and the orchestra is superb!
Why is G&S so popular in Catalunia? Besides the english speaking world, it is only popular in Israel and Catalunia. Is it the music or sense of humor or both which attracts Catalunians and Israelis?
A common error even in English performances is to try to inject humor into "The Sun Whose Rays". Yum-yum's pronouncements of her own beauty are DEAD SERIOUS and NEVER funny. Most audiences cannot grasp the pure and serious sentiments which she expresses in that short song. A careful study of "The Lost Chord" demonstrates that Sullivan was a deeply spiritual man which shines like gems hidden within Gilbert's humor.

Thank you for your comment! I think the thing that attracts us, the catalan, to G&S is basically the humor. Catalan humor is very similar to he english humor. Here in Catalonia, we also enjoy some classical sitcoms, like "Mr. Bean", "The young ones"... And G&S's music is just wonderful and gorgeous!

      Clavell,
The G&S Society here in Austin, TX is performing Ruddigore in June. See:
      GilbertSullivan.org
Please come! It is world class talent ... performed classically.
I am so impressed with quality of your productions and have commented to my many G&S friends about this delightful anomaly of a G&S "seed" which has sprouted into an enormous luscious tree in Catalunia.
      Anomaly or miracle?

The G&S seeds thrown randomly to the wind have only sprouted and flourished in Israel and Catalunia. Why? These must be extraordinary folks. What causes their souls and DNA to resonate and respond positively to G&S? This is an intriguing mystery. Its explanation fascinates me.
G&S is more than simply humor. There is NOTHING of humor in The Sun Whose Rays or in See How The Fates. Those and others were not designed or written to be funny. This concept is confusing for even many English-speaking audiences. There are awkward laughs during those songs. Instead of humor, those songs ought to be considered as lectors set to music or as musical sermons.
See How the Fates is a lesson on capitalism versus socialism set to song. Its a beautiful statement of the lack of fairness and justice in our world. It is not "funny", it is lovely and thought provoking ... that is a sterling attribute of G&S operas.
The G&S Society of Austin, Texas will perform Ruddigore in June. 2018. I invite you to attend.
The Austin Society Artistic Director is Rafe MacPhail who is a world class know-all-about-G&S expert. You may meet him there.
It is a great joy to know that G&S is glowing intensely on your side of the world and that your culture and people are tuned-in to G&S. Clearly, yours is an erudite and enlightened culture.

I first thought that this was performed in Spanish, but after a bit of research, it seems to have beeen performed in Catalin as you implied.

@@clivegoodman16 Congrats! If you are sufficiently inquisitive to investigate the validity of my statement about Catalan, you might advance to the REALLY fascinating question:
Why is G&S popular in the two non-English-speaking cities of Jerusalem and Barcelona?
What do Jerusalem and Barcelona have in common?
Austin, Texas shares it with Barcelona and Jerusalem and some might consider Austin a non-English-speaking city too.

Of course there's humor in "The Sun Who's Rays" because she's comparing her beauty with all of mother nature, that she takes after her mother. Her seriousness in her belief is very funny.

Como profesor de inglés y catalano-parlante te puedo asegurar que, bajo mi punto de vista, la adaptación de Xavier Bru de Sala es extraordinaria. Aún sonando a sacrilegio, hay momentos en que prefiero la letra traducida a la original.
