I love Azalea. The Rolling Quartz cover reminds me of the old Scorpions songs that I loved back in the '80s.

Dude, you tube keeps shadow banning my comment for some reason. I've been trying to post my comment for a while here and it will not appear on this comment section. I'll try to post an edited version below as a reply to this comment and hopefully it will show up that way.

Awesome! That's cool that you were willing to do both of them in one video! Before anything though, when I went just now to your buy me a coffee page, my posts aren't there anymore for this request. What happened? Were they accidentally deleted? I was looking for them to re-read what I wrote because I tried to keep it short as I could while still giving the history so I wanted to make sure it was still clear what I wrote.
I'm glad you reacted to Maya's first before Rolling Quartz's because that's what I meant in my message. The lyrics to both Maya's and Rolling Quartz's are exactly the same. There is no difference in the lyrics in either version. So the English subtitles on the Rolling Quartz's video also apply as a translation to Maya's song. During your reaction to Rolling Quartz's version there was a part where you said "where's the subtitles?". That was a small mistake on the timing on whoever did them. If you look back the line "Leaving me, are you happy now or not?" The part where it says "are you happy now or not?" should be in the place of where the subtitles are not showing up.
The poem "Azalea" is known by all Koreans as having a political message. After 1922 when poet Kim Sowol first published it, the poem was an influence during the 80s and 90s in South Korea during pro-democracy movements. You see, as crazy as it may sound, South Korea didn't actually become a democracy until 1997. When Maya did her song "Azalea" in 2003 by using the entire original poem as the chorus to her song (the verses around the chorus are new to Maya's song) every Korean understood it as being a political song. 2003 was a big year because that was the year when worldwide protests were held against the Iraq War. In Maya's video, some of the images you see are of the protests against the Iraq War. The poem "Azalea" is an anti-occupier message. Kim Sowol coded it as a poem about a break up because Japan did not allow Koreans to have freedom of speech so any overt criticism against Japan by Koreans at that time would've meant death.
Since the lyrics in Rolling Quartz's cover are exactly the same as Maya's, there is no difference in meaning. The significance with Rolling Quartz's version is the year that they released their cover. They released their cover this year in 2022. That's the 100 year anniversary of the publishing of Kim Sowol's famous "Azalea" poem.
Anyway, about Maya, I agree with you! Her raspy voice does sound a bit like Melissa Etheridge. Good ear! She really jumped head first into the whole Rock sound in South Korea and Azalea was a hit but she didn't get to make Rock music more popular in South Korea like she had hoped. She performed Azalea on South Korean TV several years back but she did it as more of a straight ballad and not Rock. Still, her song is fantastic and Rolling Quartz's did more than justice to it. Since Rolling Quartz are an indie band and not signed to a major label in South Korea, they do have the freedom to do the Hard Rock/Punk sound which they wouldn't get to do as main singles if they were with a major Korean label. They are trying, like Bursters before them, to gain international attention like in English speaking countries. They could be having success in that regard cause in February of this year Rolling Quartz became the first Korean indie Rock band to reach the top 5 on iTunes' Top 40 US Rock Albums Chart with their first EP called "Fighting". Pretty cool.
Really happy you enjoyed both and it's great you reacted to both in the same video!

Not to diss Maya, but RQ and especially Jayoung (the lead singer) blow the original into the weeds! Plus, RQ is a real band.

I love RQ and their cover of Azalea, but I personally prefer Maya's original. I get emotional listening to it.

Rolling Quartz? Dude.... the vocals don't even approach Maya. I'd love to see more RQ, but this comparison? Not close.
