  • This is a deleted scene from "Der Untergang" Extended Edition. In this scene, Johannes Hentschel, a technican who stayed in the bunker to took care of the generators, comes out of Führerbunker and looks around. He sees the remains of Hitler and Eva Brown's burned bodies. He also sees the dead bodies of Josef and Magda Goebbels. When he came back in, he also passes by the dead bodies of General Krebs and Burgdorf, who had shot themselves. Johannes encounters a group of Soviet female medics. They ask Johannes where are Hitler and his wife, and Johannes tells them that they are dead. They also ask where are the clothes, and Johannes says he will show them. He stops one of the soldiers from opening a door. Another soldier opens it and she witnesses Goebbels' children's dead bodies. She looks at Johannes with surprise and a bit of anger in her face, and Johannes leads the women to Eva Braun's room. The women scream with joy with the clothes.

Johannes Hentschel stayed in the bunker until the end to look after the generators which were supplying electricity, air and water to the medical bunkers under the Reich Chancellery. By May 2nd, Johannes Hentschel and Rochus Misch, a radio operator, were only people staying in the bunker. They exchanged letters to their wives in case anything happens to them. Then Rochus Misch left the bunker and Johannes became the last person to stay in the bunker. He surrendered to the Soviets when they entered the bunker. He was in captivity until he was released in 1949. Hentschel died in Achern, 1982.

You have any idea what the Soviets would do to the children of a high NatSocialist Party official like Goebbels? You know what the Soviets would do to his _daughters?_ Poisoning those children was a mercy; the number of little girls, sometimes as young as 3-4, who died of abdomin-pelvic hemorrhaging was staggering...as were the pregnancies grape babies. There was no good side on the Eastern front but, knowing what the Germans did to the Soviets, Goebbels had an idea of what they'd do back...and worse.

@@KORHISTORYARCHIVE In WW1 there had been a stereotype in the German and Austro-Hungarian armed forces that a Russian POW who spoke German was likely to be a Jew. For many Jews, standard German was merely a higher-prestige form of the Yiddish they might have spoken at home (there was a tendency to see Yiddish as "jargon" rather than as a proper language). This was sometimes carried over into WW2. At least one Soviet junior officer who broadcast propaganda in German over a microphone during WW2 was Jewish and her original language was Yiddish. At the end of the war, many Germans found that Western Allied troops, especially US and Canadians, who could communicate in German were frequently Jews although in a number of cases they were German-Americans.

I always liked Hentschall's account of the eerie quiet in the bunker after the breakouts and before the Red Army arrived with just the corpses to keep him company. He was keeping the generator going that powered the field hospital in the Reich Chancellory building. Later a group of boozed up male Soviet troops appeared full of international solidarity and told him he would be a valuable expert worker back in Mother Russia. The party mood changed when a Commissar tried to open Hitler's study door which apparently had been torched and Hentschall tried to stop him as he feared the fire wasn't out. This was misinterpreted as counter revolutionary behaviour and he got carted off to join the other prisoners

They tended to suffer more if taken alive. In turn, they got more vicious. They became so desensitized and vengeful (not without reason) that they often watched and laughed as their colleagues gang-raped German women. And before you dismiss me as trumpeting a myth, I am well aware that such actions were NOT universal amongst Soviet troops: elite troops tended to maintain discipline, whereas most war crimes were committed by rear-echelon soldiers after they got drunk. Nor am I ignoring the horrific war crimes of the Wehrmacht, which were MUCH worse and WERE universal (or close to it).

The one part I always look back on in this deleted scene was the russians reactions to finding the dead bodies of the children. Yes they were the children of one of the many hated Nazis, but they were still children. My grandfather, a Red Army commander, volunteered for the war in 1941 and ended the war in 1945 in Vienna. Then he served in Austria for about 2 years, until 1948. His name was Viktor Nikolaevich Protopov. He has good memories of ordinary Germans. We have photographs at home with a memorable inscription from people he was friends with. He said that fascism and Nazism were not the fault of the Germans, but their misfortune and tragedy. He did not bear malice towards ordinary people, and believed that he came to Europe to liberate people, not to punish them.

Wow, I can't believe they cut this. It's so shockingly horrible and weird. Then it just cuts to them happily looting nice clothes. So bizarre, I love it.

Even though the pacing/tone of this scene were probably the reasons it didn't make the final cut, I find something about it so compelling where there's this tiny bubble of hope & excitement in an otherwise bleak hell-scape.

1:39 The Russians did autopsies on the children. I saw a photograph where the oldest daughter was laying on a metal slab. She was being partially lifted up by her hair by a grinning medial worker.

Goebbels had no other choice but to poison the children. Can you imagine what the russians would've done to them?

When I saw the thumbnail (and before I noticed the Deleted Scene part of the title) I thought it were the cast/crew reenacting the hitler shouting bunker scene but with the soviets instead
