It seems to me like he's just perplexed to see that despite all the horror and nightmares, these young women still are excited at the sight of nice clothes and things.
1:53 It's nice how he is half-smiling, knowing that he is to be taken prisoner by russians, but also happy to see some joy after all that hopeless madness has finally ended.
Actually he didn't expect to be taken prisoner at all from what I understand, because he was just a worker, and not military or government, but the Russians took everyone from the bunker and put them in prison, think he was released after 2 years though.
@@GabrielNicho I think so too. Hentschel was just a mechanic in the bunker, and he didn't participate in the battle. However the Soviets considered him as an important figure because he was in the bunker, so they took him.
I think he has a good idea of what these women lived through: the horror of the Civil War, the terror of the 1930s under Stalin, the barbarism of the Eastern Front. Severe deprivation and hardship. I think he felt a bit glad that the nice clothes were going to these poor women who deserved some joy and beauty in the hard, hard lives they had led.
I think his smile is more one of condescending amusement that even after all of the awful things these women have seen, their main concern is still to loot for war souvenirs like ravenous animals.
I like how the female Soviet medics were still understandably shocked and horrified at the corpses of the Goebbels children even if they were trained to handle the sight of corpses, since they still have some sense of humanity in them regardless.
According to Hentschel, many of the Soviet women soldiers spoke rather broken, Yiddish-influenced German, suggesting that they were Jews. One however spoke German well and she actually asked "Wo sind die Klamotten?", "Klamotten" being a rather colloquial German expression for "clothes".
@@KORHISTORYARCHIVE In WW1 there had been a stereotype in the German and Austro-Hungarian armed forces that a Russian POW who spoke German was likely to be a Jew. For many Jews, standard German was merely a higher-prestige form of the Yiddish they might have spoken at home (there was a tendency to see Yiddish as "jargon" rather than as a proper language). This was sometimes carried over into WW2. At least one Soviet junior officer who broadcast propaganda in German over a microphone during WW2 was Jewish and her original language was Yiddish. At the end of the war, many Germans found that Western Allied troops, especially US and Canadians, who could communicate in German were frequently Jews although in a number of cases they were German-Americans.
@@KORHISTORYARCHIVE The Soviet women soldiers didn't speak the "Yiddish-influenced German". They clearly spoke Hochdeutsch, but with a heavy Slavic accent. And yes, most of the German teachers in the USSR were Jews, and they usually taught the students not the foreign-sounding "official" German accent, but rather the "Yiddish-like accent", because it was closer in pronunciation to the Slavic languages. But the language itself was definitely High German, not Yiddish.
Johannes Hentschel (10 May 1908 - 27 April 1982) was a master electro-mechanic for German dictator Adolf Hitler's apartments in the Old Chancellery. He also served in the same capacity in Hitler's Führerbunker in 1945. He surrendered to Soviet Red Army soldiers on 2 May 1945.
Him and the bunkers radio operator stayed at their posts even though it guaranteed their capture by the Red Army instead of attempting to get to the British lines when the bunker did their breakout
The nurses found him because they traced where this marvellous boon of light for tending the wounded was coming from by following the cables. I think the nurses treat Hentschel fair in the film because they know he is the electricity provider and has surrendered to them in preference to abandoning his post and his responsibility. That deserves a little bit of respect. Even so, I think he is wise to step forward and meet them; they would have been much less gentle with him if he had tried to hide.
lol in fairness where is there to hide when the entire German army is destroyed/separated, everyone you knew in the bunker is pretty much dead and you're in the middle of a city that's been invaded and overrun by two armies

I always liked Hentschall's account of the eerie quiet in the bunker after the breakouts and before the Red Army arrived with just the corpses to keep him company. He was keeping the generator going that powered the field hospital in the Reich Chancellory building. Later a group of boozed up male Soviet troops appeared full of international solidarity and told him he would be a valuable expert worker back in Mother Russia. The party mood changed when a Commissar tried to open Hitler's study door which apparently had been torched and Hentschall tried to stop him as he feared the fire wasn't out. This was misinterpreted as counter revolutionary behaviour and he got carted off to join the other prisoners

I suppose USSR female soldier will love Hitler after they watching Hitler's life at least Hitler don't smoke ,drink and sex playing,at least Hitler don't rape don't insult the women bodies
This, with Russian women, happened in real life but many days later when the war was over. There is a book of a formal army doctor in Russian, she wrote this story.
Maybe this scene was unnecessary for the film plot, or the film would get too long. Der Untergang is about 2 hrs and 50 mins with all the deleted scenes included.
It's nice seeing female Soviet soldiers out in the field. I'm not sure if it's covered enough, but the Red Army had nearly a million female recruits. And unlike their British or American counterparts, many served in the frontlines as soldiers and medics. I don't know if female only units freely explored and looted Hitler's bunker, but it was a nice scene to see.
Its still astounding to me how little credit is given to the SSSR in Western Media depictions of the war. Without them, the war would haved dragged on a lot longer and maybe even would lead to a truce with the western allies.
@@Bartnuschler I agree. The Soviets sacrificed over 20 million people during the war, but they had overcome and finally conquered Berlin and ended the war. They should be more credited.
They tended to suffer more if taken alive. In turn, they got more vicious. They became so desensitized and vengeful (not without reason) that they often watched and laughed as their colleagues gang-raped German women. And before you dismiss me as trumpeting a myth, I am well aware that such actions were NOT universal amongst Soviet troops: elite troops tended to maintain discipline, whereas most war crimes were committed by rear-echelon soldiers after they got drunk. Nor am I ignoring the horrific war crimes of the Wehrmacht, which were MUCH worse and WERE universal (or close to it).
They should have left this in. The contrast between all the ugliness and horror of war, and the simple joy of these soviet medics allowed to be human for a moment again, is really something. Brought me a smile when no part of this movie ever made me smile.
I was skeptical of this scene, why would female troops be the first into the Fuhrerbunker when they were not used in the fighting in the final days of the Battle of Berlin? But then I researched and found that an all female unit whos primary task was traffic management entered the bunker through an emergency exit in the chancellery garden. The second group was a a team of medics trained in German to treat German wounded. There's always something new to learn about the greatest conflict in human history.
Oh that's really cool. This is one of my favorite movies and this is my first time seeing this scene. Really neat to see that it's historically accurate even down to the German speaking medics
I always found this scene fascinating. Henschel seeing the ditch where the bodies were burned, encountering the russians, said russians finding the bodies of the Goebbles Children, then proceeding to look at the clothes while Henschel looks on. The one part I always look back on in this deleted scene was the russians reactions to finding the dead bodies of the children. Yes they were the children of one of the many hated Nazis, but they were still children. I can imagine how the russians must've felt seeing the bodies, as the russians more then likely have children waiting for them back home. They do have hearts, maternal hearts in this case, and for them to find the bodies of dead children, that must be heartbreaking
@@KORHISTORYARCHIVE What? Yeah. Especially in this case, where you find the bodies of children in the bunker where one of the most evil men in history spent his final weeks in

Not this one. The film indeed contained a number of glaring inaccuracies and scenes which condensed events in a manner and order in which they never occurred. This scene from start to finish is a complete fiction, the crater containing Hitler and Braun's partly incinerated remains was not left unfilled and the first Soviet personnel to enter the Fuhrerbunker were all males. These inaccuracies are why it was in fact omitted.

After Hitler and Eva committed suicide, Joseph and Magda Goebbels had also committed suicide. They wanted their bodies to be burned just like Hitler and Eva. However, their bodies were not completely burned because most of the gasoline was used to burn Hitler and Eva's bodies.

I wonder if this is based on an actual account, I have heard that when the Soviets found the bunker they did loot it of any goods, and promptly brought in a media unit to record the area for propaganda purposes (the video of Gobbels and his wife and children) but did Soviet medics and women at that actually raid the bunker for clothes and find a survivor who helped them?
This film is based on the book "Der Untergang" which was written by a historian Joachim Fest. He wrote the book based on the recored of the last days in Berlin, so it is most likely to be true.
It is completely true, the man in the video is Johannes Hentschel, an engineer tasked with keeping the bunker systems operating. Once all the military personnel had either ran or killed themselves he was left alone for almost a day with just bodies for company as he was a civilian he had no need to run from the Soviets.
That's interesting. They could have been Jews because many Jews who lived in Europe spoke Yiddish.
@@stevekaczynski3793 Thanks for detailed explanation!
Hi there. Do you have a source for Hentschel memoirs? Thanks.
Yeap!
Him and the bunkers radio operator stayed at their posts even though it guaranteed their capture by the Red Army instead of attempting to get to the British lines when the bunker did their breakout
I literally just looked him up to learn about him lol
No "dictator". He was the Reichschancellor and Führer of Germany in the years 1933 until 1945.

You've got a point. This scene showed active roles of Soviet female soldiers

I was skeptical of this scene, why would female troops be the first into the Fuhrerbunker when they were not used in the fighting in the final days of the Battle of Berlin? I think the fact you can see the shadow of the camera dolly to the right as it's tracking to the left at 0.30 may be why this was cut.
That could also be a reason.
My grandfather, a Red Army commander, volunteered for the war in 1941 and ended the war in 1945 in Vienna. Then he served in Austria for about 2 years, until 1948. His name was Viktor Nikolaevich Protopov. He has good memories of ordinary Germans. We have photographs at home with a memorable inscription from people he was friends with. He said that fascism and Nazism were not the fault of the Germans, but their misfortune and tragedy. He did not bear malice towards ordinary people, and believed that he came to Europe to liberate people, not to punish them.

The mannerisms of the head Soviet military is so interesting...how she demands to see Hitler, it's like she has a personal vengeance against him.
Hitler owes vengeance to all of the Soviet people.
Hitler promise to call her...which he didnt.
Every Soviet soldier has a vendetta against Hitler, his troops likely killed their families, their comrades and destroyed their homes. Everybody wanted to be the one to find him but Hitler robbed them of that, one last act of defiance to the world.
all soviets had personal vengeance against hitler
@@americancommunist6076 They've all lost someone due to the German invasion.
How many takes a scene involves is numerous, and then some editor give it the cut. A crying shame. Give viewers the opportunity to see a movie in its entirety!

Saul Goodman was in the bunker?
I love the background chatter of the Soviet women.
They chatter like they went for shopping XD
@@KORHISTORYARCHIVE the scene with Goebels dead kids, they are talking eachother whats in the room until one says “kids”
@@KORHISTORYARCHIVE Just wondering, were there any actual groups of female Soviet soldiers that went into the Bunker?
@@CarterSauceFrey05 Yes, this is historically accurate scene. If you read comments below, you can see that couple of Soviet female soldiers entered the bunker and met Hentschell.
@@KORHISTORYARCHIVE I just saw that as soon as I opened this notification, thank you again and sorry if I wasted your time!
Great to see this scene thanks for the upload
I've got the full version, where this scene is still in. Don't understand why it was taken from the "cinema"-version, for it shows the reaction of humans to these horrifying things mislead people are capable to do, even to their own children.
I also have DVD which contains all of these scenes. It was where I took these scenes from. I don't get it either.
@@KORHISTORYARCHIVE There are several scenes deleated and I don't get it. Especially scenes wherein Germans are interacting with Soviets throughout the end of the battle. I find this is quite important so show what happened in a correct way, for the German leaders were forced to look in their enemies' faces in their former capital, and this shows more than anything else how deep the German downfall was indeed...
Nonetheless, this is a really good movie and all the actors did a great job.

The actor who asked Hitler wife's whereabout, what's her name?? Please anyone know her name??
Why is all the Russian soldiers female in this scene ? Is it historically accurate or they made it so that it has more drama ?
I think this scene is historically accurate. There is a record that on May 2nd at 9 a.m., 12 Soviet female soldiers from medical unit, entered the bunker and met Johannes Hentschel. They asked him about Hitler and Eva Braun, and also Eva's clothes just like in the film.
I read in James P O'Donnell's account that Hentschall was baffled as to how they knew there was a "Frau Gitler" but then he realised they simply assumed an all powerful dictator would have a woman companion.
An officer/commissar turned up shortly after and they all scarpered like naughty schoolgirls
@@simonwilliams8525 Most of the German people didn't realize the existence of Eva Braun until the end of the war. Soviet soldiers might have just guessed the existence of Hitler's wife, just like what you've said. Or they might have been informed that Hitler had a wife when General Krebs told General Chuikov that Hitler and his wife had killed themselves, during the negotiation.
@@KORHISTORYARCHIVE I strongly think that Stalin ordered those female soviets to ask Hentschel where was Hitler and his wife. But I doubt that he told them to ask where Eva’s clothes were lol. They probably went to the gulag after reporting this to him.
@@Muzical-Man Stalin might have yelled "I don't care about some damn clothes, I wanna know where the hell is Hitler!" lol

I just looked it up, Johannes Hentschel lived to a ripe old age (74), and died in 1982. Good to know.
Thanks!
did he die in East Germany?
@@jjrj8568 - No, according to the German Wikipedia-article, he died in Achern, which is in the German state of Baden Würtemmberg, which borders France and Switzerland.
@@jjrj8568 He died in West Germany.

why is there still sounds of shelling going on ?

Fegelein's body was in this general area. But his executioner just dumped his body in the crater. It was more or less likely gone by this point with the heavy shelling and all.

Interesting! I have this on disc but didn't check out the extras. Thanks! BTW, Russian women liberated the Hit bunker? Amazing. No guns either.

The actor is Oliver Stritzel
God I never knew about this scene, thank you
These women had no idea AH had a girlfriend/wife at this time. So this was sort of in error of the moment or possibly they thought the children were Adolf's. Gitler was the correct pronunciation they used while searching the complex. Actually the first two Soviets into the bunker complex were two lost lieutenants a few hours earlier trying find their way around in the darkness, one of the officers was German Jewish ancestry. I think it was Hentschel who stated he was offered a drink from a broken wine bottle from a drunk Soviet soldier in the complex, but refused as the feared loose glass shards floating in the wine getting stuck in his intestines.
Thanks for the comment!
should not have cut this scene.
It's a great scene.
Who is the actress that asks about Hitler’s woman?
I don't know, unfortunately.
Wasn't there another scene where Chuikov tries to hide his adjutant in the closet when Krebs came to offer surrender? I remember seeing it somewhere.

@@KORHISTORYARCHIVE AWESOME! AWESOME!🙏🙏🙏 It's such a funny and yet a serious scene, IMO. And to learn that Krebs did actually speak Russian! I don't understand why they removed that scene though.
I really wish this scene was in the movie. It's the Downfall version of the "Madness!" scene at the end of Bridge on the River Kwai.

Is it right that there is also a deleted scene were they flee into the U Bahn and a Soldier ask if they were german to which a other soldier replies: “ if they werent german they would’ve shot us “ or was that a different movie?
I think that's a different movie. I've uploaded all the deleted scenes from this film, and there wasn't such a scene.
I did however find it! It is the extended escape scene. They ask the wounded ss soldier if he had seen any Ruskies.
I wonder why I’ve seen a version of the movie were this was included since it is a deleted scene.
