Nothing wrong with reselling. The stores are open to the public and most use unit pricing; they don't have the time to determine a price individually. As you said, only a very tiny portion of items meet the criteria for resale. Your TH-cam channel has been extremely helpful to me. For decades, I was the one donating to Goodwill. Now that I'm retired, with your help, I am selling some of the things I have accumulated over my lifetime. Its helped me cover the cost of inflation.

I believe the reselling market pressures some thrift stores to increase prices on some goods. I have found that happened in my city. The largest thrift stores in my region have increased prices on most shoes to an average in excess of $20 in response to reselling. So, even though resellers are leaving most items in the store, they can impact the overall thrift market and can make it more difficult for those in need to find some items at a reasonable price. I am not anti-reselling, but it's a bit naive to believe reselling from thrift stores does not hurt those relying on those stores.

Because the videos expose true prices…whole reason now goodwills sell video games on their online store. I totally agree with this commit.

I think a lot of people see news stories about people buying up diapers and baby formula and stuff like that during shortages to sell at a crazy inflated price (scumbag move, IMHO) and to them, this is something that ALL resellers do (which we don't...some of us have ethics). The thrifts around me can barely keep up getting the donations out on the floor, so there is no shortage of items for everyone. Clothing, home goods, toys, games......and chances are if there is something worth money that gets donated, the store has already looked it up and marked it close to eBay prices anyway. It's an argument made by people who are always looking for something to argue about.

It's the people that are going through every single item and scanning them all, and literally taking everything that can have any sort of profit, is what is ruining it

Last summer PBS did a story about textile waste, basically saying that 11 tons of textiles go into the landfill every year. At one thrift near me, if items don't get bought after a month or so, into the dumpster it goes. I tend to go at the end of the week and still find all kinds of good stuff. Last time I went, I found a Stella McCartney sweater for myself. Not too long ago I made $11k in one year and desperately needed a suit for a job interview. Found a great one at the thrift for $20. Trust me there is more than enough for both personal shoppers and resellers alike. Also resellers shop at more than thrift stores. They go to the bins, garage sales, flea markets, estate sales, heck even retail arbitrage. I'm very part-time as a reseller, and find great stuff all over.

Goodwill has whole outlet stores. I find name brand stuff there all the time. It’s all the stuff they didn’t sell in the store or just straight overstock. There is a surplus of material. Thrift stores are just being greedy. I’m a reseller, and as a family we made $40,000 before taxes last year. That’s barely enough to live. I have a broken spine and can’t work a regular 9-5. So this is what I do. People seem to think we are all rich. Most of us this was a last resort and we’ve found SOME success. And what we made is high for the average person reselling. And we still gotta pay taxes on that. Plus we have the cost of gas, sourcing, shipping materials. All that stuff adds up.

We didn't have a whole lot of money growing up. My Mom would buy & resell a little to help supplement our income. Grown up, we still hunt for deals at second hand stores, ebay or wherever. You are getting quality items into the hands of folks who can't afford most new things & I think it's lovely. Wishing you & your wonderful family continued success with your reselling & channel! Thanks for taking us along on your reselling adventures! :D

I started reselling a little bit about 5 years ago to add to and fund my video game collection. The increase in thrift shop prices near me over that time has been crazy. What I'm getting at is that the stores are barely benefitting the less fortunate either anymore. Plus they want me to "round up" to support their mission which I thought my purchase was doing 😆 I decline every time

the only issue I have with resellers are the greedy ones and theres so many now. also several that just stay in the thrift store all day and wait everything out. ive tried that I could not last an hour unsure how someone can wanna do that daily lol but thanks to all this the prices are really unreasonable now. the store trys to sell stuff close to ebay prices now most thrift stores are this way now around here.

I'm a reseller but I'm small potatoes, and there is one store I won't go to just because the super professionals sit in there all day long, load up several carts of stuff, and descend upon new stock like starving hogs to a trough. I browse, I pick up things I like that I think others might like or have a use for. But I don't Elbow others out of the way to horde things for myself. If someone else wants something, they can have it. There will be other stuff. The only people in the store the last couple times I went were these vultures, so I noped my way out of there and haven't been back.
Funny thing is, that store is in a high dollar area and their stuff is only meh.

Agree with you 100%. Reselling items purchased at Goodwill is not a new concept, it’s just become more popular and accessible which I think is a good thing. There will always be items for the less fortunate to buy at Goodwill and that are also thrift stores that only cater to the less fortunate, at least where I live. Reselling also helps with sustainability and keeps things out of the landfill. Also a good thing. As a reseller, I think of it as a personal mission to help used goods find their new owners.

  • @HuntingSunshine
    @HuntingSunshine 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

I’m glad you brought this is up. I’ve thought about this quite a bit; refereeing the combating ideals in my head about whether reselling is wrong. I recently started reselling. As a former corporate donkey, Ive always enjoyed going to thrift stores and flea markets to find unusual things and also save a buck or two. Although, I was the uneventful good on paper corporate success, I never felt guilty about shopping at thrift stores. However, once I started reselling, I did. The experience of going to thrift stores became dark for me. I felt guilty; as if I was doing something wrong. I asked myself why? I could probably write a book about the philosophical anthropological psychological and all the ‘icals’ that layer into the concept of reselling but I’ll sum it up to this; we here in the US live in abundance. Reconciliation - the Goodwill “Bins”. After the ‘bins’, items are either heading to a landfill or overseas to the people who do not live in a country of abundance. There is just so much stuff. My Mom, an artist, says; the price of art is what a person is willing to pay for it. So is a squishmallow or a Vintage jello mold. I don’t think anyone’s life was ruined because they didn’t get to purchase the Vintage Pyrex bowl. To most, a bowl is just a bowl. Now; another important layer is rising costs. Did Savers and Goodwill raise their prices because of resellers? Likely; also likely that it was a combination of things. If you recall, the dollar tree raised their prices 25% across the board in 2022. We hear a lot about corporate greed; goodwill and savers are FOR Profit entities that take donations under the guise that they are not for profit. This is why people freely donate; that is why I freely donated for years! They only raised prices because they wanted a piece of the pie; it’s not like resellers cost them any more money. If anything, resellers buy what a family in need may not prioritize. They got all butthurt because they saw the collector on you tube find the 20k item in their store for $2. But they didn’t think of the work and research and hours that the reseller likely did to know that the item was worth the 20k. So now they pay people to find those items before they hit the floor, sell them separately, and hiked the prices on top of it instead of just letting the little guy catch a break once in a while. I say shame on them. Lastly, will people stop donating? I don’t think so. I still donate; but now I make sure the items I donate are not crap where I never thought about it before. People may be more careful about what they donate but that makes this whole debate less than in my mind. It’s out there; people have a chance to do their own research before they donate if they want to. Also, reselling is a lot more work than you may think and not everyone has the time nor the energy to bother. Do you have all the things in your head that Mr. Pro Picker here has? Doubtful! It takes a lot of work, time, and research. Final thought - to each their own: I have my standards; such as I don’t buy or resell scrubs or work type expensive shoes. I mostly stay away from kids stuff and kitchen necessities. But will I buy the piece of forgotten art, you bet I will. Again, even those that buy the toys and the kitchen stuff, we are a country of so much stuff! Similarly, If I were to ever find the 20k item, I would donate a ton and I know most resellers would too. It’s an ecosystem in which we all play a part. Just my thrifted cents…

Well said! I agree 100% with all of it. Prices are increasing everywhere, it's called inflation and greed.Thrift stores got smart and look stuff up which is perfectly fine, they can't catch everything with value. Only what they recognize by name brand and popular licensed items.
My thing is if the non profits are increasing prices, are they increasing the help and services they provide to the veterans and low income and homeless families?

I think the people that get mad or are angry about it are probably just upset that they can’t do this for a living. So thank you for doing this, because you’ve helped me become a better reseller myself.

The thrift stores (Op shops here in Oz) I go to couldn't care or less if I buy things from them, they are all run by charities, mostly church based. There are six within 60kms of the small country town I live in and one here in town, open only on a Friday for two hours (in a coverted old house, so tiny). They all know what I do, they have too because like you, I pick up all sorts of things. They are happy to sell to anyone because the money goes toward local hospital equipment, care home residents outings, donations to food banks and any other local non for profit organisation that needs it. People can be so judgemental, often without cause.

That was me who posted the comment about poor kids in the previous video. I didn't want to respond but pro picker inferred that kids wouldn't like toys from 20 years ago, so it was no big deal if he didn't leave anything for the thrift store kids, I was thunderstruck, like these kids were dumb and wouldn't recognize old cool toys to play with. My nephews and nieces still recognize and love toys from the eighties like Light Bright, Pound Puppies, Care Bears, etc...
And donating $1000 to Toys for Tots is admirable, I'll take your word for that.

I believe it's important that we resellers have standards, convictions, and boundaries as to what we should and shouldn't do. I don't think its wrong to buy anything that's there for the taking. But using the example of a toy; if we're looking through the toy section, and there's a parent and their kid shopping for a toy, we should be willing to give them their space or simply walk away. I've seen some resellers become aggressive, rude and do underhanded things, in their eagerness to snatch the good stuff. I've experienced this at yard sales, thrift stores, the bins, and estate sales. These type of resellers come off greedy, insensitive, and self-centered. Maybe that's the true reason for the general backlash from people. So to anyone reading this, if you're one of those people who has to do those kinds of things to get ahead, then maybe you're in the wrong line of work.

As you said, you didn't start rich and just buying all the cheap stuff; you built the wealth through all the work you put in. Nothing is stopping lower income people from starting to resell as well, no? I wonder if the people who criticize resellers; also do so with people who flip old cheap houses.

I have mad respect for the people who do this honestly, humbly and with humanity, it is hard work! It's a great way for parents to be at home with their kids and make an income.
I don't buy into the clickbait or the self-promotion of way too many TH-camrs ("click my affiliate links", "subscribe to my Patreon," "buy my merchandise", "pay me via superchat to talk to me", etc.)
Good grief, with all the avenues for sourcing, there is no "stealing" going on whatsoever. LOL, I am old enough to remember when people were talking smack about the inception of thrift stores, oh how they would be bad for the economy...just don't listen to the naysayers, if they've got time and energy to throw shade on productive members of society, well, that says more about them than it does about you.
Besides...there are way bigger issues in this world like all the usable items people (thrift stores and corporations alike) throw away each year that end up rotting away in landfills.
Carry on. Stay centered, strong in who you are and the excellent work you are doing, I, of course, am tickled your wife got to quit her corporate job. Keep shining. All is well.

Hell I used to work as a garbage man and I would find clothes and other stuff in the trash and sell it. Knowing how underprivileged families survive, they prefer spending their money on food, housing and utilities. Extras include the laundromat and public transport, unless there is a vehicle in the household that needs to be maintained. Lastly, toys are usually donated or found at yard sales. I think you’re fine buying toys at thrift stores.

In terms of the resellers “robbing from the poor” controversy, I don’t think there’s much merit to argument against resellers.
Most resellers that I’ve seen just sift through the pile to find the most valuable stuff, while people from low-income/poor situations still have a fairly large pile of usable merchandise to pick from.
Most resellers are decent people, the only ones in my opinion that are malicious are the ones that support organizations like WATA who think that collecting is an “investment”.

If you're buying things you don't need but someone else that would have bought it after you does need them, there can be some actual harm there. In that very specific circumstance, you've made someone else's life a little bit harder by making them pay more for a thing they need.
However, I don't think this happens as often as people think.
As resellers, we also have the opportunity to take things that no one locally needs and ship them to people that do need them, supporting the local economy and making quality secondhand goods more available.
For example, at the end of every month one of my local thrift stores gives away its 3 month old inventory. I picked up a glass microwave turntable that had sat for 3 months getting cheaper and cheaper and no one had bought it. I listed it for about 15 bucks and sold it online in 2 days. Something that was one day from being trash in my local thrift store was someone else's salvation, saving them money, keeping their microwave running, reducing waste on both ends of the transaction, and my profit was basically a return on my time picking it up and shipping to a person that actually needed it. Without resellers, countless more items would go into the garbage and countless more wasteful and unnecessary products would need to be produced new instead of being resold used to the people that want them.
So we're a mixed bag. On the one hand, it's frustrating how hard it is for regular people to get amazing deals at the thrift store nowadays. So many people are picking most thrift stores that prices have gotten more competitive and it can take some real patience, luck or specific knowledge to score big as a regular Joe. But on the other hand, the cash we collectively bring to charities and local garage sales and estate sales and the secondhand products we make available can do a lot of good.
I just listen to the criticism and keep it in mind when I have a death pile to list and want to go thrifting instead of working on it. It does everyone more good if I put the inventory I already have on the market. And I try to focus more on garage sales, estate sales, and clearance sales. Taking unwanted stuff and turning it into cash is very rewarding, and has taught me that I don't have to be first, I just have to be creative. I can show up at the last minute of the last day of a sale and make a profit almost every time.
But I don't have a grudge against anyone doing what they need to do to make a living. Even the greediest reseller can't hold a candle to what big corporations are doing. If I'm a bad guy for making a couple bucks on a t-shirt because a poor person might need it, imagine how we should feel about grocery stores or oil companies making a profit. What we do as resellers might not be squeaky clean all the time, but it does a heck of a lot more good than almost every practical alternative.

Most poor people arent worried about which cool toys are at the thrift store. Poor people are more worried about necessities in life. Such as paying rent and putting food on the table. Purchasing items from some of these thrift stores actually may go to those type of programs. Rent assistance and food programs. Also alot of people take up reselling for extra income because they themselves may be considered poor. Whoever made that comment is the type of person who messages you days before christmas claiming you ruined their kids christmas because your lego set is too expensive. This nonsense has to stop. No one goes after wal mart for reselling. Leave resellers alone. They are doing exactly what big retail stores are doing, and taking all the heat from it. Contact walmart and let them know they are overpricing all their cool toys compared to the non cool toys. Leave us alone.
I hate that you feel the need to respond to these idiots actually. Anyone who follows you and watches your channel knows what kind of person you are. NOT Robbing from the poor, thats for sure.

I see nothing wrong with resellers. Here in Australia, most of the profits go to help struggling people here with food and furniture etc from the different type of op shops like St Vincent De Paul, Salvation Army. I never find bargains or great items like you do, but I’m not doing it for a living, and usually I’m looking for something for myself as I’m on a disability. I enjoy watching you and Jessica thrift and find great bargains and interesting items.

I'm not a reseller and lower income. Resellers aren't taking anything away from me! Thrift stores increasing their prices because they think resellers will pay anything is limiting what I can purchase though! Here in the Nashville area crews of 20 or more people come into the thrift stores to pick for reselling. 3 or 4 will hit t shirts.. same with dresses , shoes and toys. Very organized .

I was thinking about this as I was walking through goodwill yesterday. Do I think you’re “robbing the poor”? No. But since reselling has really been picking up in numbers, the stores have definitely been picked over by the time I get there. Maybe stores in other areas restock more often than they do where I am. The scope of what I’m actually looking for is very narrow, so maybe people just aren’t donating the things I’m looking for. Thanks for your thoughts

For those that say resellers are stealing from the poor should point that hate towards Goodwill. My goodwills here in CT have stopped putting out anything of value in the store and they send them straight to there warehouse to be auctioned off for more money (info i got from one of the workers). They even google the items they get in to see if they are worth more and price the items higher. Used to find a good amount of items per week now i barely find anything of worth. Not a bad racket for free items they get in. And people dont complain cause they feel its all going to charity, in the end only about 1/8th of the money goes to charity.

Bottom line anyone can drive to an estate sale or goodwill and buy those same items I’m selling on eBay. If they choose not to and buy those items from me instead what should I do just send them out for free? As the old saying goes nobody is holding a gun to their heads. Thrift stores are making it hard for the poor by raising their prices and making it unaffordable for them to purchase anything. And for those greedy resellers that sit in a store all all day waiting for goods to come out, just no. Resellers also purchase from a lot of different sources as well like Amazon returns, estate sales and other websites that offer old new stock.

I sell mostly what would be considered "luxury" items. Not necessities. Even if you want to make the "taking from the poor" stance when talking about shoes/clothing, resellers aren't buying everything the store is selling. If someone wants to call the Carhartt jacket or Jordan sneakers that I'm selling a necessity... They may need to reevaluate what you actually need to survive. People complaining about stealing from the poor are the same ones that are upset that they can't find the higher end items for themselves. It's a free market. As soon as people stop paying a premium for an item is the moment resellers will stop buying them from the thrift store. I have never felt or never will feel guilty about buying anything from a thrift store to sell. Just my two cents.

resellers dont directly rob the poor. they indirectly raise prices for poor people. Its not fun when I paid $50 for a concert ticket and my friends only paid $20 because some people were hoarding the tickets to resell. but the problem is systemic and cannot be solved.
