    Have you tried adding one of those fuseable already made hooks between glass? Would that be a no-no because its microwaved?

    • @UpcycleDesignLab
      @UpcycleDesignLab  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jennifer - sorry I am not familiar with the hooks you are referring to but if they are metal I wouldn't use them in this kiln. Thanks for watching.

    Ty for sharing this video. Have you had any incompatibility issues due to different coefficiency of expansion from using 2 different bottles?

    • @UpcycleDesignLab
      @UpcycleDesignLab  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi thanks for watching. I haven't really had any issues. I think part of it might be that the pieces are very small but I have been able to mix all the bottle colors with out any problems.

  • @terrysommers7239
    @terrysommers7239 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    do brown and green glass bottle glass have different CoE values? I've read that if the numbers are different, then the piece can eventually crack or shatter, days or even months later

    • @mewendy1
      @mewendy1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't mix glass

      @@mewendy1 yes a BAD idea.
      There IS a way to test for COE compatibility, but you need to pull stringers from each type.
      You fuse the two stringers together, then measure the curve after they cool.
      It’s complicated but I took a class at Glass and Bead Expo and it was well worth it.
      That being said it’s a PAIN!
      So keep each liquor brand separate!
      For two colors? Use glue.

    Have seen a few vids like this but none of them advise what wattage of microwave to use 🤔

    • @UpcycleDesignLab
      @UpcycleDesignLab  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Alan - I don't think it really matters. I am not even sure what wattage my microwave is. It takes a little testing and note taking to figure out what works best.

    • @skgriffin51
      @skgriffin51 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1000 watt is what i have read. If lower wattage it takes longer.

      Hi - it is called kiln paper. If your kiln didn't come with any you can purchase it online and at some craft stores. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

    Looks likeyou are using your kitchen microwave. I thought that wasnt safe to mix food cooked in the same one.

    • @UpcycleDesignLab
      @UpcycleDesignLab  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Valerie - The instructions say to clean the microwave before and after but of course folks can use a separate microwave if they want to.

      @@UpcycleDesignLab what do the instructions say how to clean? I haven't used mine due to not having another one. I might try if they say its OK.

    • @UpcycleDesignLab
      @UpcycleDesignLab  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@valeriecuan4189Hi it's not that specific. Just that you should make sure the microwave is clean before using and then wiped out afterwards.

    Anybody know what the COE of bottle glass is?

    • @MikeCarrick
      @MikeCarrick 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Similar to float glass. COE 82.
      But there is considerable variance.
      Sometimes my bottles get overcooked and come out all wrinkly.

    Don't pay hundreds for a 'microwave kiln' - it's about 10 cents of vermiculite and about 50 cents worth of firebrick powder. Look up how to make them yourself for two bucks rather than hundreds. Although be aware you'll spend thousands in the long term doing it in a microwave, versus a five dollar disposable burner from a hardware store. Just use fire, it's significantly cheaper, and far less environmentally damaging as burning your microwave at full blast for half an hour plus a pop.

      Hi I am not sure what you are saying. The klin I purchased was less than 100 dollars and it fuses the glass in about 3 to 4 minutes. Could be interesting to make one though. Thanks for your comment.
