- In this short video, I want to show you how to unlock protected excel sheets when you don’t know the password. By changing your Excel file to a zip file you can hack the password protection to allow changes. Always make a copy of the file you are changing in case you run into issues and you will also need a zip program to follow along in this tutorial
3 ways to protect your Microsoft Excel data: • 3 Ways to Password Pro...
Thank you for sharing this, Jamie! From time to time, some Excel files become protected without an actual password somehow, and this trick solved it for me!
THIS is how you do a tutorial video! Well done. Thank you for the information, it was really helpful!
Doesn't work. It says that archive is damaged (and it's not), so I can't open zip file at all.
Two things with this. First thing is that you're not meant to unarchive it. We're altering it into a ZIP file so that we can look under the hood of the Excel file and edit its elements; in this case, removing the protection element. Once we do this with an unarchiver software, we then convert it back to an Excel file as shown at the 5:05 timestamp.
Second thing is what happened to me: I accidentally deleted a portion of the code outside of 's domain. In my case, I deleted the before it as well, which corrupted my file; the same thing can happen if you delete anything after "/>" within at the 4:10 timestamp, although he went too far when he should have stopped at the 4:03 timestamp after seeing the first "/>" that belongs to . My file didn't even show a "password=" field like in the video, but it still worked to remove the sheet protection I had on it.
With these two things checked, it worked for me and I'm running the latest version of Excel. Another comment I read mentioned that if your Excel file's extension is .XLS rather than .XLSX, then you first want to change it to .XLSX or .XLSM and then to .ZIP, and then work backward after you're done editing the sheets' .XML, converting it back to .XLSX and then .XLS for usage. I can't confirm whether this actually works since my file's automatically save as .XLSX files, but I figure it's worth mentioning. On that note, Excel's Options menu shows how workbooks are saved in the Save section; mine is kept at the "Excel Workbook" default.
Excellent Teacher. I understood everything, the pace was right, the demo was spot on, and it worked!!
Glad it helped!

I have problem with Excel Workbook Password Removal or Recovery, not excel Sheet password... can you help ...?
Thanks for the trick but please add a trick to unlock the Visual Basic Modules. I have hidden all my macros behind a password and now..... you get it
Greetings dear
Why, when I open a protect sheet or protect workbook in Notepad, it gives me strange numbers and letters instead of HTML ?
Please guide me to a solution
Rather than deleting the password in the XML file , can’t you just use the Password that was displayed as “CA9C” to unlock the sheet? Or is this somehow encrypted and not really the password?
That’s correct, that wasn’t really the password that was shown.
Won't work if there's a hashValue instead of a password.
hi hw r u doing sir, how can we download the free work sheets
didn't work on my PC i forgot my password for my excel work sheet and i cant unprotected it again can you help me ??
Diagram on worksheet without password, doesn't display... it's strange?
Then how to protect your work from hacking
How about .xls file ?
Hi Jamie, when I rename the file and open it in winrar, I get an error saying, "The archive is either in unknown format or damaged". Any ideas?
I’m not sure. Make sure it’s an .xsls file to begin with. Might be an issue if it was an .Xls not an .xsls
@@TeachersTech Yes, for me this was the solution, my file was .xls, I had to convert to .xlsx first. Thank you
@@TeachersTech my file is .Xlsx still the error msg of "the archive is either in unknown format or damaged" .. Any ideas ??
@@worldofourdreams2605 I have the same issue. I am using Excel 2010. I am guessing the problem may be associated with older version(s) of Excel.
What if I cannot open the zip folder after I have converted the xlsx file?
+1 error
save the xls-excel file as xlsm or xlsx and then convert it to zip
Doesn't work. Shows file is broken or corrupted
Nice info.
It looked like your pie-chart was missing on the new file?
Yup, thats because he also removed the text
@@EpicGamingNL Yeah I noticed he was not paying attention to what he was highlighting and did it wrong.
doesn't work with old xls files. you don't have that kind of folders at all.
This is not working with .xls files. When you convert it to .zip it says the zip file is corrupted. So now what?
save the xls-excel file as xlsm or xlsx and then convert it to zip
In your video you deleted far too much, several other xml tags. Just the sheetProtection tag has to be deleted.
it didn't work
it's not working for me
How to break VBA Project password?
What is the point of the password?
very nice ...but this 1 min hack makes me believe that this protection is very very low...not something to use for really important files with privacy needed!
This no longer works, it was patched by microsoft
Good to know, thanks!
Hi Jammie, is there another way to unprotect sheet
I should save this vdo for oneday
