Our friend just crashed his plane in New York this past Sunday on his way back to Atlanta. He flew my husband and a friend to the Outer Banks on a fishing trip a couple years ago. I was nervous about it but they got there and back safe. This time he wasn't so lucky with his daughter, son-in-law and two grandsons all perished. He'd been a pilot for decades. Not sure what went wrong.

I always loved to pickup my IFR Clearance on the Ground and I have no problem doing that if the weather conditions are not in my favor

I am a retired Air Force weather forecaster. I loved the radar image. Interesting that you decided to attack those cells.
Glad you liked it! I assure you I stayed far away from the cells. I am a weather chicken, that’s why I went so far around all of that. I was also VMC the entire time. I won’t go IMC around thunderstorms without on board radar.

@@TheRunwayRyan I got the instrument done! And I do feel like a safer pilot, although know I need more actual time. Still feels weird going to look for low cloudy days to fly for currency.

I sold my Saratoga, a PA32R-301T, last April after 19 years and flights all over the Country. N8409Y was extremely good to me.
They really are great cross country airplanes. They carry a ton of weight.

I used to fly a 1984 Saratoga out of KMSL. Muscle Shoals is worth a visit for sure. Used to fly into Jack Edwards a lot. The air traffic down around there is pretty bad at times.
Now JKA has a tower and a terminal soon.
@@joenenninger971 Yes, I was just down there. The tower has helped a lot. The terminal is slow in being redone unfortunately.

I flew into Saline Co. Last August passing thru headed to Lincoln, NE on our 182. A buddy of mine picked me up and we ate at Ta Molly's.

Great video! I am currently shopping for a Saratoga and was wondering what you get for real world fuel burn below 10? I have a Dakota with a derated 235hp 0-540 and see 13-14 at 9k.

Brad Yoder we usually cruise around 15-17 GPH. The book says 13-15, but that seems a little lean. The owners would rather pay for a little more fuel each flight than a new engine, so we run conservative.
Brad I have a Saratoga TC II and like Ryan see about 15 GPH @ 9K.

Thank you! The variety is one of my favorite things about what I get to do. I am currently typed rated on the CJ series, which covers several varieties, as well as the Citation XL. I actively fly several different CJ's, a Citation XL, a Cirrus, a T182, and basically anything else that I'm qualified for that someone needs me to fly. The people who had this airplane have since got a new airplane that I hope to make some videos in soon! It is not listed above, although I am trained to fly it.
Very enjoyable flight. One of my local flying schools has the same plane. Is yours easy to fly and what do you think about a beginner learning in one of these ??. Thanks
They aren’t very difficult to fly, but I also wouldn’t classify them as a beginner plane. If I had to guess, I would say that you have to have a decent amount of time before the flight school would let you run wild in a Saratoga. I would recommend starting in a Cherokee if you plan to eventually go to a Saratoga.

I see you with the Bose ProFlight Aviation Headsets. Do they do a good job of noise cancellation and keeping the GA airplane noise out? I know they are suppose to be ok in a 737 flight deck. Just curious about GA airplanes.
Actually, no they don’t. I hated them. I tried them for about 10 hours in the Saratoga and about 5 hours in a Cirrus. I ended up sending them back and went back to my A20s.
I fly into JKA all the time, they do that “not clearing for the approach until to high for a.normal approach all the dang time, it’s frustrating

Yeah...had the same on a trip this past November. Best bet is to just cancel IFR. Love the folks at JKA though! Hop, skip and a jump to the beach front!
Looks like it was upgraded with the later version cowling - was that primarily for temps control?

What are the recommended approach/touchdown/rotation speeds for that plane?
I rotate around 80 knots, and fly final at 95 knots. As far as touchdown is concerned, i just let it land when it's ready.

Yes sir! They painted it to match the Cherokee from my other videos. The Cherokee has tan interior, so it has a tan stripe. The Saratoga has grey interior, so it has a grey stripe.
Nice video, what's your thoughts regarding Saratoga/Bonanza comparison?
Thank you! I have never personally flown a Bonanza, but I have flown a Debonair and a Baron. I think the Beech products are built way better and are much higher quality. It is however nice having the nose baggage in the Saratoga. If I have my choice, I would probably go with a Bonanza.
Are you turbocharged or normally aspirated ? A PA-32R is a terrific XC airplane. My first choice if I were buying.

Thanks for the video Ryan - I'm curious, how tall are you and how do you find the roominess (particularly head room) in the Saratoga vs. Cherokee?
I am 6’3”. The legroom is really what gets me in the Cherokee, and it is much better in the Saratoga. The seat in the Saratoga adjusts up and down. One of the other pilots flies it with the seat all the way up, and that makes me hit my head on the ceiling. Once I lower it down, I am just fine.
@@TheRunwayRyan Thanks! Yes, I'm 6'4" and the Cessna's are ok (172s and above) but the one time I flew a Cherokee, it was TIGHT! Haven't had the chance to do a Saratoga/Lance yet. Great family, reminds me of my instructor and his girls! Blessings to you sir.

It's not too bad. I would say it is middle of the road. In that price range, it is as good as it gets. It does carry quite a bit of weight, but it also uses quite a bit of runway and climb performance isn't all that great. There isn't much out there though that can carry 6 people in this price range. It also has the nose baggage compartment which gives you the advantage over a bonanza.
@@TheRunwayRyan I suspect if you had the TC model, performance would be different. As for the debate between Saratoga and Bonanza, both have their pros/cons. For me, I prefer the wider cabin of the Saratoga (I have a good amount of Piper time). I'm not impressed with the Bonanza - different strokes for different folks.
I've been thinking about buying the bose proflights but i fly a 172 an i am not sure if they will work well as it's anoisy cabin...is there anyone outthere who has any experience withthem and how they perform in piston engine airplanes
I did not care for them. I used them for about 15 hours in this plane, and about 5 in an SR22T. I couldn’t wait to send them back. Stick with the A20’s.
The Piper Saratoga II you flying is non asperated or Turbo?
This is a normally aspirated Saratoga.
Hey Ryan, I am looking at getting a Saratoga once I finish my ppl. I am based out of the Memphis area. Would you suggest training in the saratoga? I would like to pick your brain to make sure it is the right plane for me. Thanks!
I would suggest first training in something a little simpler. If you are pretty set on a Saratoga, then I would train in a Cherokee of some form. This will make the transition easier. There is nothing wrong with doing all of your initial training in a Saratoga, it will just likely take longer.

Using the OBS as a altitude reminder?
Wow! You definitely paid close attention! I sure was! I miss having an altitude reminder since the airplane does not have altitude preselect, so whenever I am not using NAV 2, I use it as an altitude reminder.
how does that headset work in piston planes?
I didn't care for it at all. I sent it back after the demo. Can't wait to see the new one they are releasing March 28th!

Jim, I have a Saratoga TC II (actually for sale as I am buying an SR-22), I typically see 150-155 TAS @ 9K with a fuel flow of approximately 15 GPH. Good luck with you search!
Jim, I’ve found the same as Mr. Walker. I flight plan for 155 KTS and around 15-17 GPH.

Terribly boring video you say? 😆 Just purchased my first airplane! A 1981 PA-32R-301 and I’m watching everything I can saratoga, lance, t tail, Cherokee 6 related videos 😆😅🤦♂️🤷♂️. If it were up to me you could’ve made it an hour long and I still wouldve been hooked! I fly in South America (Bolivia) and the plane is currently in the annual inspection as it expired as we purchased it so I’ve only been able to fly it twice! During the inspection, a magneto coil failed and the pitot heat was not working. Had to order the parts from aircraft spruce and skygeek and I’m still about 3-4 weeks before they arrive and I can have the plane with me in tip top shape.
The instrument panel is something I want to work on as they are all steam gauges and it even came with a venturi on the side of the fuselage (which I understand is for airspeed and alt) readings) but it also has a bladed pitot tube.
Anyways, just wanted to say that I really enjoyed your video and that I’m ecstatic to be able to fly mine soon!

I usually flight plan for 155KTAS.
Any plane video is a good video. I'm ATC for Pcola approach. Also a commercial rated pilot. You will be happy to know JKA now has a tower which has helped with the near mid airs that became a regular occurrence down there. You checked in with Jordan one of our young bucs here at approach. I'm in the market for a toga if I dont buy a part share in one soon. Do the owners still have a place in gulf shores
I saw that! I went into JKA a week or so ago in a CJ4. The owners of this plane have since sold it and replaced it with a Malibu. I don't fly for them very often any more, but I am checked out in their Malibu. Hopefully I can make a video in it soon. We attempted to make a video flying to an airshow a week or so ago, but it just didn't work out due to various technical difficulties. The owners of this plane don't own a place in Gulf Shores yet, but they have been looking.
@@TheRunwayRyan cool man. My wife is a Realtor for FL but has contacts over in Gulf Shores that she does deals with. My buddy really wants to jump into the Malibu instead of the Saratoga I guess once you get used to one speed your want more lol I'v flown right seat in a friends Honda Jet a few times and it's crazy getting just about anywhere in Fl in an hour or less :) Hope to see the Malibu video when you go live. I work Fri-Tues so I'll catch ya on the other side sometime. :)
What is your job title that gives you the chance to fly so many different planes. Are you with a company or your own gig?
@@ty2tall for my full time job, I am the Aviation Department Manager for a local corporation. There I fly a Cirrus and a CJ3+. Unfortunately I can’t film any of those flights. I also do some contract flying on the side in various Citations and other small aircraft like the Malibu.

Occasionally we do that. It seems to have better runway performance with the flaps.

No sir, I flight plan using the Foreflight performance profiles, and they are pretty accurate. If I had to guess, I would say it is more like 155KTAS.
