Dennis Brooks sweet! Those high lift fat wings of your ultra and h5 likely do better than my original HB’s, although i still had lots of lift reserve still. Im guessing it may have gotten to 10, given more time :-). What was your airspeed at 10k?
Hi Pete. I did not think about your thin wings. I was just thinking about your 1/2 VW. I have no need to go up there again. Except for getting above the clouds.
I’ve got mine down to about 20% of what it was at its worst (1/2 vw plate mount related). I used the white cloth and tiewrap method for isolating. I luv flying it up there, so smooth, like winter flying.
nicely flown Pete. the oil canning of the wing skin would bother me long term, and have me looking for fatigue cracks and loose rivets all the time. you mentioned 25 hp... what is the displacement of your motor ? what kind of climb rate are you getting on a "normal" day at sea level or whatever you;ve got ?
ya, I inspect constantly... so far, so good :-) Its an 82x94 1/2VW, but that HP at cruise is based on fuel flow of less than 2gal/hr. My hummel is quite heavy compared to some, and I get about 400ft/min on a std type day.
Most are! Including me, as i had to blow the bottom out of the bottom for more head and leg room. At 18” wide, it os a snug fit. No map unfolding in this one! :)
Cool! Go for it! Its fun as heck! Advice to any new pilot, find a taildragger to start your training in as it teaches better stick and rudder reactions and is much easier to learn from zero hours than after learning on a nose gear, and provides the autonomic reactions skills required in this tiny bird on the runway. :-). Sure, it can be learned later, but takes more effort, and is more fun anyway :-)
Hi Peter , I'm from near Ottawa , I currently fly a 1/2 vw powered minimax . I cruise at 60 - 65 mph indicated . I'm interested in a Hummelbird that is for sale near Montreal . Same engine as my minimax (37 hp ) . Do you think I could get an extra 20 mph or so at the same power setting in a Hummelbird ? Thank you .
@@PeteZoot Pete that looks like so much fun. Some questions: -Performance; cruising speed 97 TAS? Rate of climb? Range? -Can you fly with the canopy off? -I'm no longer current but was a low time Cessna 152/172 pilot. I think I've seen that the Hummelbird has both tailwheel and nose wheel configurations. In the nosewheel would it be difficult to fly for a C152 pilot?

The background music gave me memories of my childhood that I had forgotten.
Ah i see, a man of culture listening to bach while flying. Nice vid and music choice bro :D
LOL no culture here :-) I like all kinds of music.. but most good 70's rock is based on Bach riffs ;-)
Pro tip: you can watch movies at flixzone. Me and my gf have been using them for watching loads of movies recently.
@Kaiden Dominic Yup, been using Flixzone} for months myself :D
Hi Peter I have been up to 10000 feet in both my Hummels. Its sure nice and smooth up there

Wonderful views, I bet it feels like heaven up there, to fly with wings of aluminium!
Love that little Hummel, I think I need to build one.... Good choice of music, nice flying!
This is so peaceful.
Nice flight and lovely landing
Very nice flying, Pete. Nice video all around. Thanks!
Hi Pete. I just seen this video!!! Wow so kool and you are going faster and burning less gas than my Hummel H5!!!
Where’s the keyboard? Love the music!
I just started building a Hummel bird that I bought from Mike Tond and am curious what you’re running for avionics and transponder?
Congrats! Trig. Awesome and bulletproof. And the only kit that fits in front of the tank. Radios are behind my seat.
I cant seem to solve my oil leak in my h5. anyways beautiful view!

Beautiful i love those hummelbirds. Dont they also have a part 103 version?
me too! ;-) Yip, the ultra cruiser. Different airframe (larger) and fatter hi-lift wing.
Bach to the future...
Next vehicle!
Don't need a pilot license
Yes you do not dare burn 5 gallons of gas on one sorti!
Don’t forget to check the oil.

We don’t need to unfold maps no more. It’s all about pinch’n’zoom 😊
Your videos are a source of inspiration as I consider a homebuilt. Is your VW a 1600CC?
Thx…. More fun than a barrel full of monkeys :). 94x82 1/2vw (1200cc)
im planning on getting this aircraft when i get older anything i should know?

Pete do you still have your Hummelbird?
Yip, currently hung up, as i rebuild the engine with a fresh case.
Can you fly it in the night??
Nope, basic ultralight registered here in canada. If registered experimental, then yes with proper lighting and license.

For sure 90mph in a HB is no problem.
Whats your base?
I fly out of Cpr2 Embrun but keep my minimax on a trailer in my garage at home . I have a ppl so the hours on an amateur built HB
Would count . Thanks for your quick response . It would be great to have a conversation with you for some additional info on the HB .
