I think Metaphor expresses its politics so well cuz it's able to hold *everyone* in Euchronian society accountable for the kingdom's different problems. It acknowledges that every tribe and class can experience oppression differently, but it also understands that a weakness of diversity is how easy it is to divide people when they fail to understand, much less accept those differences. And even THEN, it's not afraid to criticize even the oppressed tribes for the unique roles they play in maintaining the status quo.
Fr it's just an awesome, very well-written and well-rounded game

There’s also Heismay, one of your party members who has very good reasons to if not wholesale reject the utopian vision of diversity and equality the novel presents, provide feedback and critique of those utopian ideals.

Hesimay is a character that has very good reasons to be as prejudiced as he is. Dude lost his son to what looked like a bunch of Parpaus just deciding to go on a murderous rampage so his attitude toward them is understandable.
You also have to consider that his own tribe are also victims of in universe racism just because they're so non human looking.

It's so good that a game actually tries to explore the social and political dynamic of racism , being very explicit about racism being bad but at the same time trying to explore actually why people are racism .
Compared to other ( most, unfortunately) games where "racism is bad, and racists are racists because they're racist!". As a psychology student is so refreshing to see it properly talked about and not just dismissed as "evil for the sake of being evil"

This game is just phenomenal. Im close to 30 hours in, and I just think it's one of the best I've ever played. I love how politcal Metaphor is, and I also love how magic is depicted in a world. Magic seems to be depicted in a mostly negative light and seems to actually pollute the world with magla particles. I have never seen magic depicted that way. It's fascinating.

  • @Gabrielfrota

I finished the game yesterday and i don´t know how far you are in the game but i think that some of the reasons why people don´t have a problem with the politics in the game are:
    1. The politics are in universe not trying to be a mirror to what is happening today in our politics or a soapbox of the writers to beat you over your head with their politics.
    2. There are multiple points of view shown and they never go like "this is the 100% best way to do things", there are points when even some of your party members agree with Louis to a certain point just do not agree with his execution, and even the party is not like 100% sure that what they want to do will resolve the problems of that society, even in the case of the Eldas, they are hated by the other tribes but they isolated themselves and never tried to undo misconceptions, hell i think they didn´t even care since it helped them to keep isolated from the rest of the wolrd.
    3. Your party is not a monolith of paragons of justice, even to the point where Heismay that is from eugief tribe one of the most discriminated tribes doesn´t like people from the Paripus tribe other of the most discriminated tribes, one could even say that he is racist against paripus people.
    4. In the end the message of the game is much more universal where you can sympathize with it independently of your political views in the real world, "when faced with the injustices of the world what do you do? give up hope isolate yourself and let everything burn and hope that what comes next is better, or you do not give up hope join forces with others even people that you don´t fully agree with and try to make a better world?"

    • @izzy1356
      @izzy1356 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

Definitely seconding 3. As soon as Heismay made his feelings on the Paripus known, I was a little worried he was gonna pull a FFX Wakka where that racism becomes the *focal* point of his character (overshadowing his grief over his family) after Martira was over.
Thankfully though it's handled pretty well. He has his issues with them but isn't above being civil, and he's honest about it to Fidelio and Basilio. Heck the main reason he distrusts them is because they're on Louis' side moreso than their tribe.
It adds a much needed layer to Metaphor's exploration of politics (and politics in games as a whole): Racial bias *will* happen between people for a variety of reasons no matter how good/bad they are. But it's on *them* to choose whether to act on it, or to make their peace with it and focus on the bigger picture.
And Heismay does the latter because he wants to see a better, happier future for *all* the children of Euchronia. Paripus included.

It’s a huge deal when you have a game that is non political insert politics where it isn’t neccesary. If a game’s entire premise is political then I don’t mind it but if a game’s core messaging isn’t political then there shouldn’t be politics in it. If politics plays a major or necessary role in the game’s story then I don’t mind it but if it’s shoehorned in and has nothing to do with the game’s premise then I take issue with it. Knowing how to tackle politics in a way that doesn’t seem divisive would need to be an art that’s mastered if you want to create a game that is political on some level.

What I find amusing about some of the players' reactions are people who claim that "my answer is not shown in this game." This game is a world filled with wealth disparity and discrimination, reminiscent of the 18th and 19th centuries rather than the Middle Ages. You will see very caricatured candidates and elections in the world. However, it is not meant to guide you to a single answer. This game provides a fictional world that mirrors this world, like Thomas More's "Utopia" and Jonathan Swift's "Gulliver's Travels," makes you think about how you feel about the world seen from a different perspective.

  • @igniskitsune887

There’s a difference between story politics and world politics. Story politics are built around the story and isn’t in your face. It’s very subtle or be out in the open but it’s never telling you what you need to think or believe in.
World Politics are the mirror to our own politics. People will write something about a real life issue and shove in your face telling you that this way is right and don’t question it. You can’t have an opinion, it’s either agree or agree no matter what.
Games and other similar media is meant to be an escape from World Politics. Sure some World Politics will slip in from time to time but if that isn’t the main focus and your story is the main focus with it being a small support to the bridge that’s holding the story together, that’s fine.

Inclusion of politics in some if not most genres of gaming is inevitable. Politics is just part of human culture hence the narrative of many games will inevitably include such. It's really just the writing that makes it bad.
Honestly, I even love when games add politics but not in a cheap shove it to my face kinda way. I pove it when they use politics to aid the gameplay and narrative. You know, ludonarrative harmony kinda thing. Like the Dishonored Series, Disco Elysium, Skyrim, Red Dead Redemption, Assassin's Creed, or Bioshock to name a few.

Another thing I think Metaphor does well versus Dragon Age V did not, is how its own internal world informs it's politics. In Metaphor, the various tribes caste systems are "justified" by its power structure, it's a might and magic fantastical monarchy with a theocracy underneath to prop up both, both power structures rely on a narrative of populism to make its caste system with the Elda specifically being at the bottom through the church pushing "The Elda helped the Super Devil way back when and now all of them are sinful in the eyes of God". Meanwhile Dragon Age V, in full honesty haven't played it yet, but I have played the others and seen the clip that got the annoying people in a frenzy. Question, why does the Qun care about someone being Enby? Like, from my understanding the Qun is a somewhat spiritual guide to life that has organized itself into the Qunari state. It's methods of control are through rigorous devotion to the state that provides any and everything through its unity, even THAT work of any kind if I remember Iron Bull correctly. They didn't ever seem to be hardcore on gender roles or sexualities before so what gives? It genuinely feels like they wanted some Enby rep and worked backwards from that to try and make it feel like a societal boundary was being crossed. It's politics being formed by our outside world and how NB people are treated, rather than the game's own inside politics. I'll grant, maybe I'm wrong, maybe I'm missing a dialogue 37 hours in where they explain how the Qun throws them off cliffs cause the gender roles are actually super important, feel free to correct.

Politics work in fiction and gaming if it FITS the fictional world.
All of the politics in Metaphor focuses on primarily tribal racism and the conflicting concept of what is/makes a utopia. It's a story of conflicting ideals and fighting for true equality, not just the the strong or weak.
Dragon Age Vailguard is a medieval fantasy (I can't even call it a dark fantasy anymore) and is full of modern isms that take many out of the fantasy. Vailguard specifically is stripped of all the previous world building of its previous games and openly ignores the lore of Origins, two, and Inquisition to focus on the forced in modern politics. It's not a well written story with nuance, it's a modern buzzword fulled mess with a fantasy skin.

He starts while thinking his noble status being a "privilege" and fight to uphold his privilege (in an altruistic way, because he is a good person) until he realizes that his noble birth is not a privilege but a duty. And so it works great in this voyage to realize that both him and his parents considered their status as a way to help their people. "A noble is a shield" means everything when he discards his way through being a Lord again to help his people. He is privileged, he knows that he is, he confronts his privilege, but is written in an amazing way. The problem is never the theme, is the writing

He'd have no real point or motivations outside of "I'm bad" and all of the party members would be self-righteous and portrayed as never in the wrong on anything. Each party member would have one character trait that is considered marginalized in our world, whether it would make sense or not in a fantasy world, and their entire personality would be that one trait. I'm sure there would be some wall being built and it would feel more like a lecture than a piece of entertainment.
People don't hate politics in gaming. They hate heavy handed bludgeonings from real world politics in escapist fantasy worlds that feel like lectures from people who are talking down to them. People just aren't always able to articulate problems and resort to shorthand terms and phrases.

@kap1618 I've not seen either, so I can't tell you. There are tons of examples of popular mainstream political heavy media that people love. Civil War is arguably one of the most popular MCU films. It's very heavy on politics, and no one cares because it's well written. Same with the Metal Gear franchise. FFVII is the most popular Final Fantasy, and it's very political.
I just think most people use "woke" as a catch-all term to mean bad now a days. I call it melenial humor or the Joss Wedon effect sometimes tongue in cheek. "Woke" is just the most used term surrounding bad writing, so I think people have taken it as the shorthand. It's overused, but so is "no cap" "went hard" and "rizz" which I've seen in entirely too many fantasy games recently. Those annoy me much more than seeing the word "woke" in comment sections lol.
