  • The Wimbledon 2021 championships opened with a bit of controversy, but there’s now been an intense exchange between players, as Jelena Ostapenko and Ajla Tomljanovic engaged in a war of words after their 3rd round match at the Championships. Tomljanovic overcame the Eastbourne champ 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 to reach her first major fourth round since 2014. While Alja mounted her comeback being up 4-0, Ostapenko took a medical time out which she went off the court for. Tomljanovic was not thrilled about this, accusing Ostapenko of faking the injury in an attempt to change the momentum.

    i forgot to mention that Ajla’s more confrontational reaction is likely due to past MTO drama: while Alja was up 5-2 in the 2019 Hua Hin final 3rd set, Dayana Yastremska called for a *questionable* MTO which changed the whole course of the match.

  • @timmcdonald5335
    @timmcdonald5335 3 ปีที่แล้ว +53

    Any player is entitled to respectfully question an umpires decision. Two points in this case. Firstly, the time out was not given at the change of ends. This means the timeout must have been judged to have been an acute injury or one that developed immediately. JO claimed the injury developed in the second set therefore it was not immediate and it should have waited until the change of ends. Secondly, JO in her press conference suggested she has had this problem before being a recurring injury which therefore should be ruled Non Treatable condition. No other sport has this rule and it has to go.

    • @JHatLpool
      @JHatLpool 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks. For me, the key point here is: 'what are the rules ?'. In the articles about this match in the UK newspapers, nobody has stated exactly what the rules are. Also, the BBC did not mention them in their match commentary.

      @harveydodd8803 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This wasn’t respectful though. She called her a liar with her sitting 10 feet away. Was Ostapenko probably using a tactic here? Sure. But behaving like a brat because someone is using rules to their advantage doesn’t mean all class goes out the window. Question the timing of the MTO for sure, but don’t call her a liar in front of a crowd of people.
      Also, no other sport has a player by themselves on a court playing non stop for hours. Boxing is maybe the closest exception and yes the ref will call a medical timeout because safety is more important someone’s momentum.

Jelena doesn't get treated with enough respect at Wimbledon. The bottom line is you CANNOT know or assume anything about another person's body or injury. You can make a guess, have a gut feeling, or make observations, but you never have grounds to claim you know better than a physio and their patient. Tomljanovic should have the professionalism to simply be quiet about things she cannot control, focus on her own game and keep her ignorant comments to herself. This remains true even if later it was proven Ostapenko was "faking" or exaggerating. Just be quiet and remain professional. Don't accuse someone of lying when you simply do not know and cannot know the facts, because you are not a physio or a medical expert.

      @@rsb512 if there's no chance, and following your logic then there are 2 options: 1) end the match without making anything and don't ask for MTO 2) retire. The fact that she asked for the MTO shows that she tried something, injuried or not she tried something to have a chance. About Ajla it happened to her before vs Yastremska in 2019 in Thailand, she was winning and suddenly Yastremska was very injured, obviously after the MTO Yas was playing perfectly normal, she broke Ajla's momentum and won. So here I completely understand Ajla, the reaction was probably wrong; to say "we all know she is lying" but in the end Ostapenko was trying something injuried or not. I adore Alja’s body especially from behind. But whether she fake it or not, that’s Jelena’s right. Don’t judge it. If tournament allows it, then you should obey.

      AT was arguing that the injury was not an "acute" one and that JO didn't should have got the MTO before she (AT) served when they were not even changing side and resting. Then she was also speaking out that she thought it was a completely fake talk.
      But despite this last part, she was absolutely right on the first one.
      And this is why she wanted to speak to the supervisor.

      She should have finished one more game and then could go for the medical timeout if that's what she really needs. Very odd to ask for timeout in the middle of the game and didn't look sick at all

    Ostapenko was probably faking it, but Tomljanovic can't call his colleague such a liar, he was even winning 4-0. The same could happen to her next time and if they doubt her, she will be angry too. Very disrespectful.

    I can understand why Alja called Jelena our after the Yastremska incident in 2019. However even if Jelena was faking, I think it was unprofessional to call her out in front of everyone. Something similar happened with Monfils and Sonego and Gaël just talked to him about it at the net very calmly. It was quite rude tbh to hear Alja call Jelena a liar because she ‘knows when a player is injured’. However if Jelena was faking hopefully this serves as a warning to her.

    I don't get why people are saying that Ajla is a better player. The same year in another tournament Jelena beat the Ajla with confidence. Anyways these are all assumptions. And Ajla's accusations were out of fear not out of confidence, that's completely clear. Confident player, would sit and wait, not throw out some false accusations. After this match, my respect for Ajla is down. She is the weak one in my opinion, even if Jelena did simulate.

    It happens all the time, e.g. Muchova vs. Barty in last AO where MTO was suspected to be a tactic to break the opponent's momentum. Professional players should learn to deal also with that.
