In that case (x = -1) is fine because BOTH expressions break down (with a divide by zero) when you use x = -1 So it's not turning the right expression in to something that doesn't work in the original left expression x=0 is indeed a special case because it works in the right expression but NOT in the original
The note on x =/= 0 was more to give the students a preview or heads-up about the concept of restricted domains, he's not actively lecturing on the topic of functions just yet, so the goal was to give kind of a warning that it's coming, rather than being completely thorough. Besides, x = -1 isn't in the domain of the original expression either, so it doesn't have to be noted.
