Please research more. As a glowforge owner the customer service is horrendous and has not improved in over 3 years. Also the machines are not worth the price. They are more prone to break.

hi! you don't have to BUT it is recommended/easier because the Aura scans the Proofgrade Material & automatically populates the cut/engrave settings! if you bought wood from another store, you'd have to go through a LOT of trial & error with getting the settings perfect and risk damaging the machine with an unknown material :( I hope this helps!
