North Carolina State was a huge underdog in that 1983 clip. They pulled off a series of upsets under Coach Valvano who is a very influential coach who gave a famous speech (that you could check out). He got cancer so he founded the V foundation that does great work to research cancer
The thing with March Madness is that every game will be the last game of the season for the losing team. And for any seniors on the team it will probably be the last game they will ever play (at least at this level). They won't play professionally; they'll graduate and get a regular job. So they push hard to win and, unlike professionals, are willing to take a chance on getting injured. And even for fans who aren't that into sports, the intensity of the players is contagious, especially in a small arena like a basketball court.
I’m a huge Texas A&M fan and our ending against Northern Iowa was one of the wildest I’ve ever seen. That game came directly after UNI hit the half court buzzer beater against UT so they were hot. We were down 12 with about 40 seconds left so I just went up to bed since I knew we were done and ended up missing the ending until my dad called me back in with a couple seconds left lol. It was more of a sell job than a comeback but it was WILD.
I was there in person in OKC. One of the most unbelievable games I've ever seen. I was so lucky to be in attendance for that, the UNI buzzer beater against the Horns, and the Final Four for the Villanova buzzer beater vs UNC all in the same year.
The thing about the NCAA Tournament is that it’s a measuring stick for basketball players. Your play determines if you are either NBA, G League, Overseas, or just a regular civilian in a local college basketball team jersey. Add in that some of these players are going to be done playing basketball at a high level if they lose and you get every player who touches the court showing 100% effort and talent and it produces wild outcomes.
3:36 That was the 1983 championship game, widely considered one of the greatest upsets in college basketball history. The favored team had unbelievable talent at every position, including 2 players who would later be enshrined in the Hall of Fame. The underdog, North Carolina State, was fortunate even to be in the tournament field. On paper, they had no business in the same gym with Houston. NC State's coach was a man named Jim Valvano. Ten years later, he tragically passed away from a rare form of cancer. Shortly before he died, he gave a legendary speech at an awards ceremony. It was poignant, tragic, inspirational, funny, and unbelievably brave. Wherever I feel anything resembling self doubt, or pity, or lack of will, I watch that speech. It moves me to tears every single time, without fail. It also re-centers my focus and gets me out of whatever funk is dragging me down. I cannot recommend it more enthusiastically, whether it be for your channel, or simply for your own personal sense of Zen.
In March Madness every corner of the country is represented by a college team. It does not matter if you went to that college. The players are generally from your region. If they over achieve, beat a giant school, advance to the later rounds, it is a huge boost of regional pride. This is where the passion of college sports comes from.
College football and basketball were huge before the professional game in the US, which is why you will see so many old programs with maniacal fanbases. The college game belongs to the small towns.
Love to see your love for college sports! You're really get why so many people in America prefer college sports over professional. Can't wait for the next round of games this week the tournament has been so good so far this year!
The best thing about March Madness are the Cinderella teams.... you should do a review on those. There was even one from 2018 (and also this year now) where a 16 seed beat a 1 seed.... that'd be like your local football(soccer) club beating Man U or one of the top caliber teams in the Premier League. 15 vs 2... 14 vs 3 etc... the big "favorite" upset picks are usually a 12 vs 5, which is huge in and of itself, but when you get those real small school snowball chance in hell teams upsetting a Goliath and then continuing to win deeper into the tourney... you'll hear Cinderella Story tossed around a lot. Definitely check it out.
10:24 that game was hands down the best basketball game I've ever seen. A great Duke team who was a their highest point as program vs a scrappy Kentucky team that was returning to blue blood status. I'm sure their are documentaries on TH-cam. A couple years ago ESPN did a documentary on the kid who hit the last shot titled: "I STILL Hate Christian Laettener".
Different states in the US are into different sports. Most sports are played in colleges throughout the country, but some states are more into football, some basketball, some hockey. Or wrestling, or crew.
Also, in March madness, they match two teams that most likely haven’t played each other all season and place them in one of the cities where they have every team. They spread them throughout the country and usually it’s two teams in a place that has no loyalty to either team so the fans just want a good game or root for the underdog. It’s a neutral site and that helps even the playing field from big super talented teams and small teams that no one has ever heard of before . And those small teams win sometimes in incredible fashion!! Every year!!
I'm a huge UConn basketball fan. The 2011 team and the epic tournament run they went on led by Kemba Walker is easily my favorite college basketball moment/time. There's a nicely done video about it called The 11-Game Run That Immortalized Kemba Walker and the 2011 UConn Huskies if you're interested in checking it out. It's like 10 minutes long.
That first clip was incredible! If not for the channel, certainly for personal enjoyment, heres a link to a compilation video of fan reactions. College basketball and football have some of the most passionate fans in the world! th-cam.com/video/UAepPm6nStQ/w-d-xo.html
There are a couple I'm a little surprised didn't make it in here from 2005: Illinois put together a huge comeback in the Elite Eight against Arizona (down 15 with about 4 minutes to go, won in OT), and in the same round, Michigan State beat Kentucky in 2OT despite a buzzer-beater from Kentucky where the ball bounced on the rim four times before dropping and the shooter's foot was right up against the 3-point line, to the point where they spent about 10 minutes reviewing it to see whether his foot was on the line (game over, MSU wins by 1) or behind it (OT). They finally decided it was a 3. If we hadn't replaced the carpet since, you could probably still see the trench I wore in it from pacing back and forth during that review.
As usual I have enjoyed another of your videos. The 2022 ncaa final between kansas and North Carolina was spectacular. I suggest you watch the highlights. Thanks again.
I love your enthusiasm for american college sports. Even our high school programs are great to watch. Threy are part of teaching students how to work together, work hard towards goals as a group and how to handle not only winning but also about losing. I suspect you might understand more about americans and our culture a bit differently since starting this journey through college sports. I hope that you will be able to visit us and be part of a crowd at a football game. College basketball is great, too but, football is at another level in atmosphere and marching bands.
I'm a big Maryland fan and watching that shot go in made me hate Michigan State to this day, I can still remember watching it and being so mad/sad because they had such a good team that year and had a chance to go pretty far.
Those crazy college football fans you mentioned? They're the same ones at the basketball games. The games are hosted at designated sites around the country so there are very few "home" games for any team. Occasionally, a host site will be the same arena as one of the teams in that region, but it is not a common occurrence. Virtually all of them have to travel and only the craziest of their fans will make the trip with them.
unless its against my school team, i always cheer for the underdog. love it when smaller schools surprise powerhouse schools, david vs goliath matchups.
To give you an idea, the “final four” is normally played in football stadiums. For example, this year it’s in Houston. You can expect over 70,000 people to attend.
The tournament brings pride for all of the older alumni (graduates) of these universities. Most of the fans of the games are alumni because they can afford the tickets also. ...All college sports (mens and womens) have end of season tournaments. College baseball's tournament is madness also.
98% of these college basketball and football players will never make it to the professional level so for most of them this will be the last time they get to experience the game the crowds the atmosphere. Most of them will go on to work normal jobs after they graduate so it definitely adds to the experience
What you have to know about NCAA Tournament is it’s one game at a time. You lose and you are done. No 7 game series. The players are there at most 5 years if they have to sit out a year so usually 4 but great players can leave after 1 yr. The tears are those who won’t get the chance again. Also the number in front of team names is their seed in the tournament in one of four regions. So Northern Iowa was the 13 seed which is the 49-52 seeded team over all where TX was a 4 so 13-16 overall. It was a big upset
My favorite moment is when Hakim Warrick blocked a shot with 1 second left in the 2003 championship. If he didn't block it it would've been a tie game. Syracuse won 81-78 over Kansas.
2:05. That shot was not just a shot to win the game, it was a shot to win the National Championship!! That guy will be a hero at Villanova for the rest of his life! 3:20. On the court right at this time stamp are 2 future NBA Hall of Famers! Hakeem Olajuwon & Clyde "the Glide" Drexler. They both played for the University of Houston. Two Hall of Famers on one college basketball team & the team lost. It was a massive upset. 10:48. That shot by Christian Laettner to give Duke the National Championship gave him a spot on the 1992 Dream Team. The Dream Team was the team that the US sent to the Olympics. The Dream Team had Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, Clyde Drexler, Scottie Pippen, Patrick Ewing, Karl Malone, John Stockton etc....
Wisconsin fan and graduate. I follow all the sports both for men and women. Of course it's easier to get broadcasts of the major sports. That loss to Florida was painful, but we did beat Xavier on a last second three point basket that is included in a number of these videos.
Another thing you may not realize is that so many of these moments are from small schools that should never beat these big money schools but in March… anything is possible!!!
❤ Love to watch folks enjoy college sports. When you follow a team, you watch all their sports, football, basketball and baseball. Some colleges have female sports teams, so double the excitement.
College sports fans are so intense because in many cases, the towns where those schools are located may not have any professional sport teams. Therefore not only are the students really dedicated fans, but so would be the locals who don't even attend the school. it's all they have. Also, college kids are just intense in general LOL. You put that together with some amazing moments, and there you go.
The only thing I can really compare college sports to in another country is Japan's Koshien -- the national high school baseball championships. There's all sorts of legends from those, like the time Daisuke Matsuzaka threw a complete game despite the game going 18 innings, then came back and got the final three outs in relief *the next day*. As for which sports people follow: you generally support your school's teams over other schools, but most people don't care about most sports. Really only basketball and football have universal appeal, along with anything your school in particular may be good at -- and if your school is really bad at basketball or football, they can fall off the radar. When I went to Wake Forest University, probably the top sport besides basketball and football would have been golf, although due to the nature of that sport we didn't have a lot of people show up to watch in person -- that, and Wake Forest is a fairly small school to begin with with only 6,700 students. But we've been good at golf for a long time, dating back to Arnold Palmer who went on to win seven majors between 1958 and 1964, and continuing with players like Bill Haas who won the 2011 FedEx Cup (the PGA tour's season-long points race). That said, most of the chatter on campus was about football and basketball, with the occasional thought spared for soccer and tennis; the baseball team had free admission for students and the game I went to there were maybe twenty other people there. That's changed as our baseball team has gotten better, though, to the point that we even moved in to what used to be the local minor-league team's stadium and can get a couple thousand fans for big rivalry matchups.
Many of these young athletes won’t make it to the Pros let alone have a stellar professional career! For them this is their only chance at a National Championships! College kids play with such heart. Many of these Universities have superb sports programs, not only in football and basketball but also swimming, track, gymnastics etc. I believe this is one reason why the US does so well in the Olympics esp the summer games! Interesting tidbit, that basket made by Laettner secured him the one collegiate spot on the 1992 Olympic dream team.
The players want to make it to the NBA, so they play hard every game. People take a lot of pride in their college or university. These players have usually been playing since they were kids.
I Am Alive Because Of Indiana University Beating Purdue University.(conception origin i am told) My Favorite Moments…. 1. Indiana University Perfect season (i dont remember it, but i have it in DVD and was Alive when it happened) 2. My dad pulling me from High School for a “college visit day” in Kentucky (Aka tickets to every sweet-16 game in the region, that day)….Indiana University Beat Duke….And we watched like 3 other games . 3. When Indiana Upset #1 Kentucky against uni-brow man. 4. When Butler Bulldogs (Indianapolis team) Made it to the Championship Game. My Grabdpa played for Coach Hinkle way back in the day (their Fieldhouse is named “Hinkle Fieldhouse” after my grandpas coach)
That's what Wisconsin got for singing one shining moment after the round of 32 and that dorky white guy who kept doing the championship belt move 🐊🐊🐊🐊🐊
I just have to say that I was there for the UNC-Villanova game at the the start of the video. We had great seats and I remember the way the whole stadium exploded when Marcus Paige hit the game tying shot. He's one of my all time favorite Carolina basketball players. I know the next few seconds didn't go so well, but we won it all the next year too. I haven't finished the video yet but I imagine Luke Maye's game winner over Kentucky might be on there and if it's not you should check it out. Heck of a shot.
You should watch the Arizona vs Illinois game from 2005, I'm not saying who won but it was a great game for my team... atleast look up the highlights video
To answer your question, no the fans don’t get as rabid for anything except basketball and football. And mostly just men’s basketball. I say that because it is so easy to get tickets to women’s ncaa final four. I would have added 1985 Villanova over Georgetown to this list. That KY, UNC game, if you pay attention featured several current NBA players.
There was a solid 3-4 year stretch in which the women's final had as much last minute excitement as the men. Just need to look at the game differently, the women are shooting the 3 better, and it helped that the dynastic UConn team got taken out from time to time.
Part of the appeal of March Madness is that small teams can (and do) make runs in the tournament. I love college football, but there's no denying that money is power in football. A big school like Alabama could play the Upstate South Carolina Air Conditioning Repair and Henna Tattooing Academy in football 100 times, and Alabama would win (at least) 99 of those 100 games. Easily. But college basketball is a more egalitarian sport. In 2018, #1 seed University of Virginia took on #16 University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). UMBC didn't just "win", they won by 20 points: 74-54. It was the first time a #16 had ever beaten a #1 seed, and the school that did it - UMBC - was a school 99% of Americans had never heard of before that very day. The tournament is fun like that!
the skill level in college sports is so high because they are essentially are armature programs, this is where almost all of the top american NBA players come from.
Someone please tell me that European sports fans are no so emotionless and cold that they do not go bonkers in the stands witnessing great moments like these. Because we never see it on TV.
Forgive my ignorance as I'm not from the UK, but you sound 100% Scottish not British. Edit : College basketball and football became bigger, earlier than their professional counterparts. It's the opposite for baseball...nobody really watches college baseball in comparison.
@@Dzaaaaa4332 I'm aware but I've never heard of anyone from outside of England w/i Great Britain refer to themselves as British. Always Scottish/Welsh. Northern Ireland isn't part of Great Britain.
North Carolina State was a huge underdog in that 1983 clip. They pulled off a series of upsets under Coach Valvano who is a very influential coach who gave a famous speech (that you could check out). He got cancer so he founded the V foundation that does great work to research cancer

@12:00 TX A&M was down 12 pts with 44 seconds left. Unbelievable they came back and tied it and then won in OT

How about Princeton though? Im cheering them on in the Sweet 16. Im also cheering for FAU but only because i dont like Tennessee lol
Go vols😘

You are absolutely correct. The original rules for basketball reside in Phogg Allen field house Lawrence Ks.

I was salty AF that year because that UNLV team was my favorite squad of all time.

One hockey player you should look at is Connor Bedard. He’s not in the nhl yet, but he is pretty much the guaranteed number 1 pick in the draft
It’s MADNESS!!!!
Indiana HAS to be on this list or it’s not proper
I remember 06. Also sadly 2021. Hoping this year will be different go Bruins
the skill level in college sports is so high because they are essentially are armature programs, this is where almost all of the top american NBA players come from.
You should pick your favorite and watch the game so that you can see the scope of the ending
Indiana Basketball Wasn’t mentioned….That’s a shame
And then they go to Class with everyone else
I love all sports and as good as professional sports are I think college is better. At least it's more exciting.
Someone please tell me that European sports fans are no so emotionless and cold that they do not go bonkers in the stands witnessing great moments like these. Because we never see it on TV.
It's so much better than the NBA.
If Indiana isn’t on here….It’s Because someone in Kentucky made the video
Duke!!
college basketball is the best
Forgive my ignorance as I'm not from the UK, but you sound 100% Scottish not British.
Edit : College basketball and football became bigger, earlier than their professional counterparts. It's the opposite for baseball...nobody really watches college baseball in comparison.
Scottish is British - England, Scotland, Wales & NI = Great Britain
He is Scottish…he’s mentioned it before.
@@Dzaaaaa4332 I'm aware but I've never heard of anyone from outside of England w/i Great Britain refer to themselves as British. Always Scottish/Welsh.
Northern Ireland isn't part of Great Britain.
