What a true drummer. The ability to transform rhythm into pure musical energy… jesus. Definitely gone too soon. A force of nature!

Ralph is one of my favorite drummers of all time. He has such an erudite and intellectual musicality to his playing, a lot like Elvin, Omar Hakim, Graham Lear, Mark Craney, Tony. So deep and heavy.

The only thing standing between us and him is practice

      not really
he also has one of the deepest, earthiest and heaviest swing feels of almost any drummer I've ever heard, Tain has that too, Ari Hoenig too, no amount of practice can give you that, you either have it or you don't
      You don't believe me ?
Listen to Dave Wekl or Vinnie Colaiuta play swing and tell me that all thats standing between them and Ralph is practice
you can have all the technique, chops and ridiculous skill on the set in the world, but the feel, that deep, heavy, undulating, connected to the core, heartbeat of swing, you either have it or you don't

I'd say practice with the right focus, guidance and learning environment. Feel is learned, not inborn. Some learn it early on and readily. Others have to work hard at it. A certain aptitude helps. And most of us won't reach the level Peterson's playing at. But it's a worthwhile and potentially joyful endeavor for anyone who wants to try : )

I would say it’s a deeper understanding of musical intention and energy almost metaphysical
