@@Euoplocephalus2003.no judgment cuz music taste is subjective, but i’m a huge aes fan and am curious who your top rappers are. what artists are u into rn? i’m always lookin for new stuff.
I can’t not think of a better artist to be honest. I’ve listened to him for years and lyrics chime in my head throughout my day to day and while I’m doing something all of a sudden Aesop pops up and I just smile. Understanding isn’t the point nor is the optics. it’s all about life and the the path you walk. I feel like he paints a great picture of someone who has found what truly make his self and others grounded and heard and I wouldn’t change a thing about it. Congratulations man you have done great things and we appreciate every syllable.
I have been a HUUUGE fan of Aesop for nearly a decade now,and he has blown me away many times...But None Shall Pass...That song MUST go down as one of the top HipHop songz of ALL Time!...
Aes is the moxt complex rapper I have ever heard. Perhaps too complex. I have to read along the lyrics as I listen to even get half of the big picture he is trying to portray. I love it.
I dont think being underground depends on your popularity, i think underground rap has a certain sound. You can hear Atmosphere, Aesop or Ill Bill and just know its underground from its sound, its totally absent of cornyness.
PixelPerfect28 I think the underground part of music in general is, for the most part, made with the intent to get their message across and impress their current fan base. Most of mainstream music is over-polished and has any controversial topics taken out of it, while still keeping that fake edginess. Although this is to be expected from a market where mega superstars can be yesterday's news very quickly. Underground cares about the supporters it currently has, and prides themselves on how far they can and have made it on their own. Also, they don't have to care about pissing people off about tackling controversial topics because they probably got those supporters for the very same reason. The underground is underground because make music with what they have currently, which creates that unpolished tone we all love.
The corniest rap music I've ever heard was some of the underground shit I heard ten yeas ago and keep bumping these days, but I know what you're saying. Point being underground hip hop is really varied
I know what you mean but I don't think a lack of corniness is at all the defining factor. Slug def has some corny shit, Vinnie too, tons of ppl. You're right about an "underground sound" though and what that is is raw rap. Main thing that separates Aesop Rock from Asap Rocky is that Rocky is not home just mastering his craft of rapping. He's not solely sharpening his pen, he's also chasing those big hits, catchy hooks, and spending time and energy trying to have mass appeal. He wants to look cool and sound cool and all that. Very concerned with perception and being a superstar. Dudes like Aesop are concerned with the art of rapping and that's mainly it. Being a better emcee. Underground means not that many ppl listen to it and until the masses are blown away by crazy rhyme schemes, multi-syllabic rhymes, and all that shit - raw rap will stay underground.
A lot of people have been responding to this comment, so I figured I'd explain myself. I agree completely that if all rappers sounded like Aesop, it would be stagnant. I didn't mean sounding exactly like him, I meant being of the same quality. Equally good, but not the same. But still, music wouldn't be as good if there was only one genre.
It's interesting that hip-hop is so much bigger now, bigger than ever, and there's an even bigger divide between his music (or real/raw rap) and mainstream hip-hop. And it keeps growing. We really can't just call it hip-hop anymore when you have Aesop Rock and guys like Uzi Vert and they're supposed to be the same genre?
Props to the interviewer, casual enough to make Aesop feel comfortable and start chatting yet he also asks intelligent questions. So many interviewers just ask lame questions then sit there nodding while the interviewee talks.
It would be the shittiest. Don't get me wrong, I fucking LOOOVE Aesop Rock but more than him I love the variety in rap. I like being able to go from Aesop to Doom to Jay-Z to Snoop to even rappers I personally think are shit like Mims.
Jesse Rockwell 8 years later would you say you got them? haha. depends if you meant based on sound, structure, content, etc... but rings is definitely a sort of follow up to that theme
@TheUnbreakableOtaku Well consider that if everyone was like Aesop Rock, everything would be pretty similar. What's great about Aesop Rock is that he emerged from all the bullshit mainstream hip hop. If everyone was just like him he wouldn't be that genius that we all look up to.
I wish I could agree, but you gotta think about how it would actually be dull and boring if everyone sounded the same. It's like how everyone in the mainstream sounds the same.
people who are smoking breaks down alot nicer lyrics that everyone else , atleast in my opinion , so i guess ur one of them "dont do drugs, your brain will melt"
I like Aesop, but if everyone were the same then the hip hop genre would be become mindlessly repetitive and no one would want to listen to the same style, the adversity of hip hop is what makes it so renowned.
Aes has sparked my mind in a way nobody ever could, i look up to him so much
If all rappers were like Aesop Rock, hip hop would be the best genre ever.
no doubt
hip hop is already the best genre ever. period.
False, hip hop in its entirety is subjective. Aesop ain't that good.

"The need to make songs was bigger than the fact that I didn't have a budget".

some of Vinnie Paz's is mad corny but people would say he's underground

Atmosphere is corny as haha but I love em. Underground’s just more independent but dude do blow up.
Just listened to Daylight, first time I heard it. Crazy talent.
I love when I’m just living life then one of his lyrics go through my mind and I realise what he meant. He’s the actual GOAT.
None shall pass is my fav. Wish I got to see this tour
Love aesop.
What's up! ... where are we again?
didn't expect him to be so humble... coooool.
One of the best

It would be the shittiest. Don't get me wrong, I fucking LOOOVE Aesop Rock but more than him I love the variety in rap. I like being able to go from Aesop to Doom to Jay-Z to Snoop to even rappers I personally think are shit like Mims.

If they were all the same? I disagree, imposed uniformity leaves little playtime for change... How would hip hop evolve?

Your new favorite rapper. If you get to understand him.
I like Aesop, but if everyone were the same then the hip hop genre would be become mindlessly repetitive and no one would want to listen to the same style, the adversity of hip hop is what makes it so renowned.
