  • For thousands of years, the backbone of agriculture relied on the sweat and toil of human and animal labour. But with the dawn of the industrial era, a revolution was set in motion. Enter the steam engine, a marvel of engineering that would change the face of farming forever. Industrialists seized upon the potential of steam power, aiming to bring its might to the fields. The steam engine laid the groundwork for mechanisation, setting the stage for the next wave of agricultural innovation. The reaper and steel plow emerged as pioneers of this new era, sparking a fervor to mechanise agricultural processes. Companies sprang up, eager to capitalize on this growing trend. By the early 20th century, a flurry of experimentation ensued as hundreds of companies vied to revolutionise farming with powered vehicles. But amidst the chaos, a few giants emerged. By 1929, names like Deere, Ford, and International Harvester stood tall among the dwindling ranks of agricultural machinery companies. It was a pivotal moment, as the familiar form of the modern tractor began to take shape. Debra Reid noted the groundswell of interest in rural and agricultural America for a lightweight and dependable tractor. Neil Dahlstrom highlighted the transformative impact of the Bull tractor introduced in 1913-1914. Christian Overland emphasized Henry Ford's view of the tractor as an investment despite initial losses.

Wow. Couldn't force myself to watch the whole thing. Footage has utterly no synchronization with the narration. If that wasn't bad enough, the AI was intolerable. Too bad, because the content seemed interesting enough. I just couldn't bear to listen to it

'Terrible AI narration as well as poor organization of the story!
The lack of a consistent historical chronology, both in the writing and in the presentation of both archival and contemporary film clips, left one feeling as if they were on an out of control time machine through the 20th century!
An excess of repetition in the rehashing of corporate histories and commercial competition, seriously confused the issue.
Certainly, it's not nearly up to PBS' regional affiliates' usual standards, unfortunately!

Fun to see the old footage but had to mute the AI narration. Should change the title to "Tractor Wars - Insane Story Telling"...

The photos are all mixed not keeping pace with the speaker and is very much pro Ford. This is the first time I've listened to Henery Ford praised so extensively for his dumpy little handy tractor.

Funny, first tractors became became smaller as opposed to the gigantic steam tractors, and today tractors are getting larger and larger.

Bigger is better, as they say. But don’t know if that’s true in practice.

So the john deere hillside combine is what caused the dust bowl because before it became available farmers didn't plow the hills just the flatland
